        <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>The cover shows a schematic illustration of patterned colloidal photonic crystals with different bandgap positions. When an unknown light source impinges on the patterned photonic crystals, the light information can be identified from the reflection intensity profile of the constituent photonic crystals.         Effect of Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Repair of Defect in the Articular Disc in Rabbit Temporomandibular Joint by Platelet-Rich Fibrin

        The objective of this study was to evaluate platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)’s effectiveness in repairing articular disc defect in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of rabbits. Eight rabbits were divided into four groups of two rabbits each, corresponding to groups A, B, C, and D. Both TMJs of all of the rabbits were used in the experiments: the right joints comprised the experimental groups, and the left ones, the control groups. The disc defect was circular and 2 mm in diameter. In the experimental groups, the PRF was compressed into the defect, whereas the control group defects were left untreated. A, B, C, and D groups were sacrificed at the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th weeks, respectively. The defects of each control group exhibited no specific changes. Contrastingly, in each experimental group, there was an increased number of chondroblasts at the margins of the defects, along with accelerated cell differentiation and a columnar cell arrangement observable at the time of cell differentiation. The experimental groups showed inflammatory cell infiltrations and fibrosis by the 1st week, maturation of chondrocytes by the 2nd week, and proliferation by the 4th week, after which the defects began to be filled with chondrocytes, a process that was complete after the 6th week. In the histological evaluation (H-E), the experimental groups showed significant increases of chondroblasts after the 2nd and 4th weeks, as well as regular columns of chondrocyte arrays observable during cell division. After 6 weeks, the defects were filled with chondrocytes.

        We report a case of a 57-year-old male who underwent a curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with histological confi rmation of spontaneously necrotized tumor. Initial serum AFP level was 4,778ng/mL. Ultrasonography demonstrated a 3. 7cm hyperechoic mass in segment 6 of the liver and dynamic contrast-enhanced liver magnetic resonance imaging showed 3. 7×3. 1cm sized HCC. He was scheduled for curative surgical resection under the clinical diagnosis of an early stage HCC (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A). Without any intervention, the serum AFP level rapidly declined to 50 ng/mL over three weeks. He underwent curative wedge resection of segment 6 of the liver. Histology revealed a complete necrosis of the mass rimmed by infi amed fi brous capsule on a background of HBV-related cirrhosis with infi ltration of lymphoplasma cells. Exact pathophysiology underlying this event remains unknown. Among the proposed mechanisms of spontaneous neoplastic remission of HCC, circulatory disturbance and activation of host immune response offer the most scientifi c explanation for the complete histologic necrosis of HCC in the resected mass seen in our patient.

        Electrical Properties of (Ba,Ca)(Ti,Zr)O<sub>3</sub> Ceramics for Bimorph-type Piezoelectric Actuator

        In this study, lead-free $(Ba_{0.85}Ca_{0.15})(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ ceramics and a bimorph-type piezoelectric actuator were fabricated using the normal oxide-mixed sintering method, and their dielectric properties, microstructure, and displacement properties were investigated. From the results of X-ray diffraction, the pattern of the specimen has a pure perovskite structure. In addition, no secondary impurity phases were found. The excellent piezoelectric coefficient of $d_{33}=454pC/N$, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_p=0.51$, the dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r=3,657$, the mechanical quality factor $Q_m=239$, and $T_c$(Tetragonal-Cubic) =$90^{\circ}C$ were shown at x= 0.085. ${\Delta}k_p/k_p20^{\circ}C$ and ${\Delta}f_r/f_r20^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum value of -0.255 and 0.111 at $-20^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum total-displacement was $60{\mu}m$ under the input voltage of 50 V. As a result, it is considered that lead-free $(Ba_{0.85}Ca_{0.15})(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ ceramics is a promising candidate for piezoelectric actuator application for x= 0.085.

        Background: Maculopapular eruption is the most common adverse reactions to antituberculosis drugs (ATD), often leading to discontinuation of the medication. While the mechanisms of ATD-induced MPE are not well understood, oxidative stress induced by the ATD metabolites could play a role in drug-induced MPE. We aimed to examine if the genetic polymorphisms in superoxide dismutase genes (SOD1, SOD2 and SOD3) were associated with MPE induced by ATD. Methods: We enrolled 75 patients with ATD-induced MPE and 237 ATD-tolerant control by regular monitoring of adverse reactions to ATD. Genotyping was performed 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in SOD1 (rs2070424), SOD2 (rs4880) and SOD3 (rs2536512 and rs1799895) in patients with ATD-induced MPE and patients tolerant to ATD. Genotype-phenotype association was examined by logistic regression analysis adjusting for gender and age. Results: In SOD1, there was signifi cant association between rs2070424 (Ivs3-251A/G) and ATD-induced MPE (P = 0.019, OR = 2.42, 95% CI 1.16-5.05), with higher frequency of genotype, GA + GG, in patients with ATD-induced MPE compared with ATD-tolerant controls. The other polymorphisms in SOD2 and SOD3 did not show signifi cant difference of genotypes between case and control group. Conclusions: Intron SNP rs2070424 of SOD1 (Ivs3-251A/G) showed signifi cant association with ATD-induced MPE. These fi ndings suggest that this genetic variant may increase the risk of ATD-induced MPE.

        Over the past few decades, drug regulatory agencies in advanced countries have been emphasizing pharmacomctrics as a tool for an effective and efficient drug evaluation. Despite this international movement, the value of pharmacometrics is still poorly recognized by the Korean drug evaluation system. This study aimed to analyze the current state of utiliza-tion of pharmacometrics by foreign drug regulatory agencies and develop a road map to guide the implementation phar- macometrics into the Krean drug evaluation system. MEDLINE and foreign drug regulatory agency database were extensively searched to obtain scientific research articles, guidance, regulations and pharmacometric review reports on foreign pharmacometric drug evaluation system. A systematic roadmap comprised of 3 stages to implement pharmaco-metrics in Lorean drug evaluation system was formulated after analyzing the collected data in tune with the current evaluation system. Pharmacometrics is an urgently required tool to achieve an efficient drug evaluation and review in Korea. The road map developed by this study is expected to aid in setting up a policy to implement and utilize phar-macometrics in Korea.

        Estimation of N Mineralization Potential and N Mineralization Rate of Organic Amendments as Affected by C:N Ratio and Temperature in Paddy Soil

        Understanding N mineralization dynamics in soil is essential for efficient nutrient management. An anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted to examine N mineralization potential and N mineralization rate of the organic amendments with different C:N ratio in paddy soil. Inorganic N in the soil sample was measured periodically under three temperature conditions ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$) for 90 days. N mineralization was accelerated as the temperature rises by approximately $10%^{\circ}C^{-1}$ in average. Negative correlation ($R^2=0.707$) was observed between soil inorganic N and C:N ratio, while total organic carbon extract ($R^2=0.947$) and microbial biomass C ($R^2=0.824$) in the soil were positively related to C:N ratio. Single exponential model was applied for quantitative evaluation of N mineralization process. Model parameter for N mineralization rate, k, increased in proportion to temperature. N mineralization potential, $N_p$, was very different depending on C:N ratio of organic input. $N_p$ value decreased as C:N ratio increased, ranged from $74.3mg\;kg^{-1}$ in a low C:N ratio (12.0 in hairy vetch) to $15.1mg\;kg^{-1}$ in a high C:N ratio (78.2 in rice straw). This result indicated that the amount of inorganic N available for crop uptake can be predicted by temperature and C:N ratio of organic amendment. Consequently, it is suggested that the amount of organic fertilizer application in paddy soil would be determined based on temperature observations and C:N ratio, which represent the decomposition characteristics of organic amendments.

        Three Freshwater Lembadion Ciliates (Peniculida, Lembadionidae) Newly Reported from Korea

        Three freshwater ciliates, Lembadion lucens (Maskell, 1887) Kahl, 1931, L. bullinum (Müller, 1786) Perty, 1849, and L. magnum (Stokes, 1887) Kahl, 1931, belonging to the genus Lembadion Perty, 1849 are newly reported from Korea with detailed descriptions and illustrations based on live observation and protargol impregnation. Lembadion lucens is characterized by following characteristics: 52-91×33-64 ㎛ body size in vivo; ovoid and slightly asymmetric body shape; 27-49 somatic kineties; and 55-80% of whole pellicle covered with meridional lines with rectangular meshes in posterior portion. Lembadion bullinum is distinguishable from its congeners by its body size of 110-130×60-73 ㎛ in vivo; ovoid body shape; oral aperture occupying about four-fifths of ventral side; 48-55 somatic ciliary rows; meridional lines with rectangular meshes except anterior portion (about 16% of body) on pellicle. Lembadion magnum is also characterized by its body size of 70-90×37-50 ㎛ in vivo; obliquely asymmetric anterior end of body; oral aperture occupying about more than four-fifths of ventral surface, and opened longitudinally entire ventral surface; 45-61 somatic ciliary rows; meridional lines without rectangular meshes on whole pellicle of body. The present study is the first description of the genus Lembadion from Korea.

        Detection of Lung Cancer using MAGE A1-6 and SSX4 RT-PCR Expression Profiles in the Bronchial Wash Fluid

        Purpose: Bronchial wash fluid may be a useful for detecting lung cancer. To increase the detection rates, we performed molecular analysis with using MAGE A1-6 and SSX4 RT-PCR on bronchial wash fluid specimens.Materials and Methods: We obtained 57 lung cancer tissue specimens by bronchoscopic biopsy and 131 bronchial washes from 96 patients with lung cancer and 35 patients with benign lung diseases. The MAGE A1-6 and SSX4 gene expressions were investigated in the cancer tissue specimens and bronchial wash fluids. We evaluated the positive detection rates of these methods according to the cytology results and the clinical findings.Results: For the cancer tissue specimens and the bronchial wash fluid, the positive detection rate of MAGE or SSX4 was 91.2% and 75.0%, respectively. Combined MAGE and SSX4 PCR and cytology tests showed an 83.3% detection rate for the bronchial wash fluid. From bronchial washes of patients with benign lung diseases, the positive rates of using MAGE or SSX4 was 11.4%. In the bronchial wash fluid of lung cancer patients, 66.7% of the peripheral cancers were detected by MAGE or SSX4, while examination with cytology did not detect any peripheral lung cancer.Conclusion: The application of both MAGE and SSX4 showed high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of lung cancer. Thus, MAGE and SSX4 RT-PCR may be effectively utilized as additional methods to improve detection of lung cancer with using bronchial wash fluids.
