Directors' Remuneration and Performance: Evidence from the Textile Sector of Bangladesh
AKTER, Sharmin,ALI, Md. Hossain,ABEDIN, Md. Thasinul,HOSSAIN, Balal Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.6
This study investigates the impact of board incentives as proxied by directors' remuneration on the financial performance of listed textile companies in Bangladesh. Using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and data pertaining to listed textile companies of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) during the period from 2011 to 2017 (resulting in a total of 140 firm-year observations), we have estimated the firm performance equation involving directors' remuneration and board independence as the independent variables and some other control variables like firm age, size, leverage, and operating efficiency. The results reveal that there is a negative association between board remuneration and firm performance. In addition, this study finds no significant relationship between board independence and firm performance of the sample firms. Our findings suggest that higher pay to the board does not stimulate higher firm performance and, in turn, results in shareholders getting nothing in return from this and, hence, is a matter of great concern for them. Moreover, our results indirectly indicate that currently directors' remuneration in Bangladesh is not aligned with the firm performance, which has been emphasized in extant corporate governance literature. Besides, this paper further raises questions about the effectiveness of independent directors in the boards of textile firms in Bangladesh.

Purpose: Perinatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection can lead to biliary atresia (BA) in different entities. This study aimed to compare the clinical, hematological, biochemical, and histological features of infants with BA based on their CMV immunoglobulin M (IgM) status at presentation. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between January 2019 and June 2020 at the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka. Forty-three patients with BA were selected purposively and categorized into either the CMV IgM-positive or CMV IgM-negative BA group. Categorical variables were compared using Fisher’s exact test and chi-square tests, while the Student’s t-test and Mann–Whitney U-test were used to compare continuous variables. For all statistical tests, a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Thirty-three (76.7%) of the cases were between 2 and 3 months of age on admission. The clinical, hematological, and biochemical parameters did not differ significantly between the CMV IgM-positive and CMV IgM-negative BA groups. Most (50.0%) of the CMV IgM-positive cases had fibrosis stage F2, while 43.5% of the CMV IgM-negative cases had fibrosis stage F3, with no significant difference between the groups (p=0.391). Conclusion: Our data shows no significant distinction between CMV IgM-positive and CMV IgM-negative BA, suggesting that CMV does not contribute to BA pathogenesis.

When liquid essential oils are exposed to the environment in the air, they oxidize easily and lose their therapeutic effect. In this work, linalool nanocapsules loaded with essential oil were prepared by the encapsulation method. The effect of adding different concentrations of crosslinker (1.25%, 2.5%, 5% CaCl₂) was also studied. The morphology, swelling index and inhibitory activity were also evaluated. The encapsulation of linalool in the biocapsules was increased by increasing the amount of essential oil from 71.33 to 92.2%. In the PBS medium, the swelling index is about three times higher. The high antibacterial activity of linalool loaded biocapsules was more potent against Escherichia coli in 2 hours. The biocapsules synthesized in this study are promising candidates for long-term storage to reduce environmental bio-contamination with pathogens.
Entropy and scaling behaviors of international trade patterns

We investigate the impact of international commodities trade on economic growth of fve Asian countries including China over the last two decades. We examine the exports of eight commodity categories from 1995 to 2018. Firstly, we calculate trade entropy by considering the probability of exporting a product from one country to another. Our analysis reveals a signifcant increase in China’s trade entropy for manufactured goods primarily classifed by material, compared to other products. The strong correlation between changes in gross domestic product (GDP) and trade volume in China indicates a remarkable contribution of manufactured goods to GDP during the studied period. Additionally, we establish a power law-scaling relation between GDP and product exports over time. Notably, the growth of manufactured goods from China exhibits a super-linear relationship with GDP.

Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate compound thathas been derived from cruciferous vegetables. It was shownin numerous studies to be active against multiple cancertypes including pancreatic, prostate, breast, lung, cervical, and colorectal cancers. Sulforaphane exerts its therapeuticsaction by a variety of mechanisms, such as by detoxifyingcarcinogens and oxidants through blockage of phase Imetabolic enzymes, and by arresting cell cycle in the G2/Mand G1 phase to inhibit cell proliferation. The most strikingobservation was the ability of sulforaphane to potentiatethe activity of several classes of anticancer agents includingpaclitaxel, docetaxel, and gemcitabine through additiveand synergistic effects. Although a good number of reviewshave reported on the mechanisms by which sulforaphaneexerts its anticancer activity, a comprehensive review on thesynergistic effect of sulforaphane and its delivery strategiesis lacking. Therefore, the aim of the current review was toprovide a summary of the studies that have been reportedon the activity enhancement effect of sulforaphane in combinationwith other anticancer therapies. Also provided is a summary of the strategies that have been developed for thedelivery of sulforaphane.

The effects of amino acids and dipeptides on in vitro production of porcine embryos and accumulation of ammonia in culture medium during developmental stages were examined in this study. The maturation, fertilization and development of embryonic cultures were performed in modified Tissue culture medium (mTCM)-199 supplemented with 10% (v/v) porcine follicular fluid, modified Tyrode's albumin lactate pyruvate (mTALP) medium, and modified North Carolina State University (mNCSU)-23 medium, respectively. In addition, amino acids and dipeptides of different concentrations and combinations were used to treat the embryos. The addition of L-alanyl-L-glutamine (AlnGln)+L-glycyl-L-glutamine (GlyGln) significantly (p<0.05) improved oocyte maturation, fertilization and the incorporation and oxidation of 14C(U)-glucose when compared to the control group and other treatment groups. Additionally, 2-4 cell, 8-16 cell, morula and blastocyst development increased significantly (p<0.05) following treatment with AlnGln+GlyGln when compared to the control group and other treatment groups, while this treatment reduced the accumulation of ammonia. Taken together, these findings suggest that treatment with AlnGln+GlyGln may play an important role in increasing the rate of porcine oocyte maturation, fertilization and embryonic development by reducing the level of accumulated ammonia measured in the culture media.
