The purpose of this study is to analyse diverse functions and uses of Spanish article lo. Spanish is the only Romance language which has preserved an neutral and unchangeable article, which is called 'article lo'. Lo can nominalize the adjectives, which, in this way, acquire a meaning equal or similar to that of the neuters of Latin. The nominalization with lo gives abstract character to the adjectives in competition with abstract nouns, etymologically and semantically correlatives. This study is composed of four chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter focuses on the difference between 'article lo'(lo esperado) and 'pronoun lo'(lo esperaba). And we examine a variety of uses of Spanish articles by dividing the second chapter into two sections: the comparison of the definite article with the indefinite one (el libro/un libro), and diverse characteristics of the article lo. The third part, the analysis of different functions and uses of the article lo, is divided, in its turn, into three sections: 'lo + adjective'(lo noble=la nobleza; lo bueno=las cosas buenas; en lo alto=en la parte alta), 'lo + relative clause'(toma lo que quieras), and 'lo + adjective/adverb + que'(todos saben lo simpatica que es tu hermana). The fourth chapter addresses impersonal expressions with a sense of topicalization(lo imporante es (que)=es importante (que) ), and idiomatic phrases, which are structured with lo(a lo lejos); and shows how the article lo is interpreted into other languages like English, French and Italian. This investigation on lo is believed to contribute to our understanding of its diverse functions and also to the solution of various communication problems.
Toward Smart and Occupant-Centric HVAC Systems
Seungjae Lee 한국생태환경건축학회 2021 한국생태환경건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.21 No.2
It is expected that the adoption of cyber-physical-human systems towards smart and occupant-centric HVAC systems (i) save building energy consumption; (ii) manage or curtail buildings’ electricity peak load; and (ii) maximize occupant thermal satisfaction. In this context, the author presents his recent contributions towards smart and occupant-centric building HVAC systems. Three research outcomes are presented: (i) a data-driven modelling approach for learning individual occupants’ thermal preferences; (ii) an optimal control approach providing customized thermal environments while minimizing energy consumption; (iii) an effective and less-intrusive user interface for occupant-centric HVAC operations.
A New Database Operator Definition and Searching Algorithm for Snesor Networks
Seungjae Lee,Changhwa Kim,Sangkyung Kim 대한전자공학회 2007 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2007 No.7
Most sensor networks are currently used to gather sensing data from a broad environment in which it is very difficult to deploy the existing networks (e.g., internet). Recently, researches on relational database approaches to sensor networks are being tried. There occur, however, some problems in applying directly the traditional relational database concepts into a sensor network. For instances, consider the following examples: How can we write a query to get locations at which temperature is 22℃, given a sensor network area where there are some spots with exact 22℃ but there is no sensor node to announce exact 22℃. For a solution about the above described problems we propose in this paper a new database operator for the sensor network and a searching algorithm for this operation. This new operator allows to create tuples with existing tuples. As a result, this new database operator with the new searching algorithm can provide more effective data management and standard interfaces to application programs in sensor networks. Furthermore, it is also helpful to spare node's energy by reducing the number of communications in processing a query.
Stable chimeras of non-locally coupled Kuramoto–Sakaguchi oscillators in a finite array
Lee Seungjae,Cho Young Sul 한국물리학회 2021 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.78 No.6
We consider chimera states of coupled identical phase oscillators where some oscillators are phase synchronized (have the same phase) while others are desynchronized. Chimera states of non-locally coupled Kuramoto–Sakaguchi oscillators in arrays of finite size are known to be chaotic transients; after a transient time, all the oscillators are phase synchronized, with the transient time increasing exponentially with the number of oscillators. In this work, we consider a small array of six non-locally coupled Kuramoto–Sakaguchi oscillators and modify the range of the phase lag parameter to destabilize their complete phase synchronization. Under these circumstances, we observe a chimera state spontaneously formed by the partition of oscillators into two independently synchronizable clusters of both stable and unstable synchronous states. In the chimera state, the trajectory of the phase differences of the desynchronized oscillators relative to the synchronous cluster is a stable periodic orbit, and as a result, the chimera state is a stable but not long-lived transient. We observe the chimera state with random initial conditions in a restricted range of the phase lag parameter and clarify why the state is observable in the restricted range using Floquet theory for periodic orbit stability.
Old Korean Writing on Wooden Tablets and its Implications for Old Japanese Writing
( Lee Seungjae ) 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2014 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.27 No.2
The texts inscribed on wooden tablets (mokgan 木簡) contain many examples of Korean hanja 漢字, unique characters developed and used in Korea. The fact that a few examples of these Korean hanja from Silla 新羅 resemble gugyeolja 口訣字 in shape enables us to hypothesize that gugyeolja attested in later periods might find their origins in these Korean hanja used on mokgan. In addition, some Korean hanja may also be observed in ancient Japanese texts, which supports the notion that Japanese writing practice was influenced by the notational conventions of the peninsula. In Japan, the origin of the use of both phonetic and semantic readings of Chinese characters can be traced to Baekje, and the use of what is now known as okuri-gana 送り假名 may be closely related to Silla’s conventions of hunju eumjong 訓主音從 and mareum cheomgi 末音添記. The historical change from an on-gana 音假名-based writing system to a kungana 訓假名-based practice in ancient Japan can be understood as the shift from following the notational conventions of Baekje to following those of Silla.
Area Wide Calculation of Traffic Induced $CO_2$ Emission in Seoul
Lee, Im Hack,Lee, Seungjae,Park, Jin Soo,Kim, Shin Do 대한토목학회 2012 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.16 No.3
To reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) from automobiles, real on-road emission data should be required to help policy makers establish standards for reducing GHG emissions. Since general studies on calculating $CO_2$ emissions from transportation sources have been based on petroleum consumption data, it has been difficult to analyze spatial activities and characteristics of transportation sources. In this study, we propose a method for calculating $CO_2$ emissions from on-road transportation sources in Seoul. We focused on $CO_2$ emission calculation by applying real traffic flow data and analyzed base emissions from the main roads and local streets. Because the emissions were calculated using a 1 km${\times}$1 km grid cell format, these data can be applied to other compatible transportation data sets for air pollution analysis, modal shift analysis, etc in the transportation sector.
