Objectives:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of abstinence programs on the prognosis of alcoholic patients. Other factors that might also influence the prognosis of alcohol dependence were identified. Methods:A retrospective study was done by reviewing medical records of patients diagnosed as alcohol dependent between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2005 at the National Health Insurance Medical Center, Ilsan Hospital, and data from the records of 207 patients who have been followed up on for more than 1 year were analyzed. The data included sociodemographic information. Results:Married patients were found to have a lower readmission rate com-pared to those who were single, divorced, bereaved, and separated, and those with alcoholic liver disease were more likely to relapse. Patients who had been re-admitted had statistically lower abstinence program participation numbers and participations (rates=participation number divided by admission day). Even in the re-admission group, the abstinence period was found to be longer in patients who had participated in more abstinence pro-grams during admission. Conclusion:Participation in inpatient abstinence programs was found to be a major factor of the patients’ prognosis. The role of spouses of alcoholic patients was also found to be important in preventing their re-admission.

Summary

Because molecular oxygen functions as the final acceptor of electrons during aerobic respiration and a substrate for diverse enzymatic reactions, eukaryotes employ various mechanisms to maintain cellular homeostasis under varying oxygen concentration. Human fungal pathogens change the expression of genes involved in virulence and oxygen‐required metabolisms such as ergosterol (ERG) synthesis when they encounter oxygen limitation (hypoxia) during infection. The oxygen level in plant tissues also fluctuates, potentially creating hypoxic stress to pathogens during infection. However, little is known about how in planta oxygen dynamics impact pathogenesis. In this study, we investigated oxygen dynamics in rice during infection by Magnaporthe oryzae via two approaches. First, rice leaves infected by M. oryzae were noninvasively probed using a microscopic oxygen sensor. Second, an immunofluorescence assay based on a chemical probe, pimonidazole, was used. Both methods showed that oxygen concentration in rice decreased after fungal penetration. We also functionally characterized five hypoxia‐responsive genes participating in ERG biosynthesis for their role in pathogenesis. Resulting insights and tools will help study the nature of in planta oxygen dynamics in other pathosystems.

Recently, wireless charging systems have expanded their applications from household electrical appliances to outdoor activity devices. In wireless charging systems, solar cells have versatile advantages, such as abundant raw materials within the earth, reasonable prices of products, and highest power conversion efficiency. In this study, the photovoltaic effect between a silicon solar cell and a photon of infrared wavelength was simulated using a Shockley diode equation. A solar cell power charging system was then set up to: 1) clarify mechanisms of the charging interaction based on the photovoltaic effect with a laser source, and 2) verify interdependency of the parameters: laser settings and geometrical position between a solar cell and the laser. As was observed, the solar cell generates more power when the photon was irradiated uniformly, intensively, and vertically on the surface of the solar cell.

Norgalanthamine is a major component of Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum that exhibits several biological activities. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties of norgalanthamine in mice with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced renal injury. Norgalanthamine (1 and 10 mg/kg) was orally administered to mice for 7 or 14 days, after which renal injury was induced by CCl4 (1.5 ml/kg, i.p.). The vehicle and positive controls consisted of phosphate-buffered saline and silymarin (100 mg/kg), respectively. In CCl4-injured mice, norgalanthamine pretreatment significantly reversed the increases in serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and total bilirubin levels, and the decrease in the serum glucose level. The histopathological evaluation and Iba-1 immunoreactivity also supported the protective effects of norgalanthamine against CCl4-induced kidney injury. These results suggest that norgalanthamine ameliorates oxidative renal injury, possibly through reducing enhancing antioxidant enzymes, and suppressing infiltrated macrophages.

Introduction: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N8 outbreaks occurred in poultry farms in South Korea in 2014 resulting in significant damage to the poultry industry. Between 2014 and 2016, the pandemic disease caused significant economic loss and social disruption. To evaluate the risk factors of HPAI infection in broiler duck farms, we conducted a retrospective case-control study on broiler duck farms. Materials and Methods: Forty-three farms with confirmed laboratories on premises were selected as the case group and 43 HPAI-negative farms were designated as the control group. Control farms were matched based on farm location and were within a 3-km radius from the case premises. Spatial and environmental factors were characterized by site visit and plotted through a geographic information system (GIS). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were developed to assess possible risk factors associated with HPAI broiler duck farm infection. Results: Four final variables were identified as risk factors in a final multivariable logistic model: “Farms with ≥ seven flocks” (odds ratio [OR] = 6.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34-37.04), “Farm owner with ≥ 15 yrs. of raising poultry career” (OR = 7.91, 95% CI 1.69-37.14), “Presence of any poultry farms located within 500 m of the farm” (OR = 6.30, 95% CI 1.08-36.93), and “Not using a fecal removal service” (OR = 27.78, 95% CI 3.89-198.80). Conclusion: This highlights that the HPAI H5N8 outbreaks in South Korea were associated with farm owner education, number of flocks and facilities, and farm biosecurity. Awareness of these factors may help reduce the spread of HPAI H5N8 across broiler duck farms in Korea during epidemics. Greater understanding of the risk factors for H5N8 may improve farm vulnerability to HPAI and other subtypes and help establish policies to prevent re-occurrence. These findings are relevant to global prevention recommendations and intervention protocols.
