Habitat Distribution and Diversity of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on Geumo Mountain

We investigated the habitat distribution and diversity of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae), a bioindicator for assessing environmental changes on Geumo Mountain, in survey plots at different altitudes on the southern and northern slopes of Geumo Mountain in South Korea. From April to September 2021, we collected 1,384 individuals, 41 species, and 15 families of Carabidae from the survey sites. The dominant species collected was Synuchus cycloderus (347 individuals), followed by Carabus jankowskii (193 individuals). The monthly distributions of species richness and abundance were as follows: 24 beetles of 9 species in April, 115 beetles of 28 species in May, 288 beetles of 32 species in June, peaking at 379 beetles of 32 species in July, 354 beetles of 23 species in August, and 224 beetles of 14 species in September. Additionally, we collected 305 beetles of 32 species at 400 m, 326 beetles of 31 species at 500 m, 359 beetles of 27 species at 600 m, 582 beetles of 16 species at 700 m, and 112 beetles of 7 species at 800 m near the summit. The habitat distribution by slope was 307 beetles (20 species of 8 families) on the southern slope and 1,077 beetles (34 species of 15 families) on the northern slope. For the 307 beetles of 20 species collected from the southern slope, the diversity, evenness, and dominance indices were 0.981, 0.754, and 0.156, respectively. For the 1,077 beetles of 34 species collected from the northern slope, the diversity evenness, and dominance indices were 1.187, 0.775, and 0.101, respectively.

<P>This study evaluated the efficacy of periodontal tissue regeneration using guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with a mixture of tooth ash and plaster as a bone substitute material in the treatment of class II furcation defects in dogs. GTR was performed at the site of a surgically formed mandibular premolar bifurcation area in dogs. Four adult dogs were used in the animal study. The animals were in a good periodontal state without any systemic disease. A resorbable membrane (Bio-Gide®, Swiss) and bone graft material using a mixture of tooth ash and plaster were used to examine the biological activity. The defect in the control group was filled a Bio-Gide® only. For the experimental group, the defects were filled with a mixture of tooth ash and plaster and covered by a Bio-Gide®. Oral rinsing with 0.12% chlorhexidine was performed twice a day for 2 weeks. In control group, new bone formation was observed adjacent to the preexisting bone. Soft tissue ingrowth was also noted. In experimental group, new lamellar type trabecular bone formation as well as centum and PDL regeneration was observed in the base of the infrabony pocket. More bone regeneration would be expected when GTR is performed using a mixture of human tooth-ash and plaster of Paris as a bone graft material.</P>

<P>Kabuki syndrome (KS) (OMIM#147920) is a multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation syndrome. Recently, pathogenic variants in KMT2D and KDM6A were identified as the causes of KS in 55.8-80.0% of patients. To elucidate further the molecular characteristics of Korean patients with KS, we screened a cohort of patients with clinically defined KS for mutations in KMT2D and KDM6A. Whole-exome sequencing and direct sequencing for validation were performed in 12 patients with a clinical suspicion of KS. KMT2D and KDM6A mutations were identified in 11 (91.7%) patients. No recurrent mutation was observed, and 10 out of the 11 mutations found were novel. KMT2D mutations were detected in 10 patients, including four small deletions or insertions and four nonsense and two missense mutations. One girl had a novel splice-site mutation in KDM6A. Each patient had a unique individual mutation. This is the first report of mutational analysis via exome sequencing in Korean patients with KS. Because the mutation-detection rate was high in this study, rigorous mutation analysis of KMT2D and KDM6A may be an important tool for the early diagnosis and genetic counseling of Korean patients with KS.</P>

Patient outcomes with emphysematous pyelonephritis vary with the classification type and other factors. This is a case of bilateral emphysematous pyelonephritis with several risk factors for adverse outcomes. A 71-year-old diabetic woman was referred to us in stuporous state with fever. The patient`s temperature was 38.7 ℃ and blood pressure was 90/60 mmHg. The abdomen was distended with severe flank knocking tenderness. The laboratory findings showed white blood cell count of 26,400/mm3, hemoglobin level of 10.5 g/dl, platelet count of 46,000/mm3, glucose level of 422 mg/dl, BUN of 163 mg/dl, and creatinine level of 5.5 mg/dl. Urinalysis showed 1+ proteinuria, 1+ glycosuria, 25-30 WBCs/HPF, and 25-30 RBCs/HPF. Unenhanced computed tomography demonstrated multiple gas pockets in renal parenchyma, pelvis, ureter, and bladder. Patient was immediately treated with percutaneous catheter for drainage of gas and purulent material, and parenteral antibiotics. E.coli was isolated from both blood and urine cultures. This patient had several concomitant risk factors for adverse outcomes, such as thrombocytopenia, acute renal failure, impaired consciousness, shock and involvement of both kidneys, which are usually associated with significantly increased risk of mortality. However, the patient was successfully treated without undergoing nephrectomy.
