<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives are synthesized by oxidative polymerization using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant dopant. The resulting polymeric materials featuring nanofiber-type one-dimensional (1D) structures are identified as poly(2‐butyl‐2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxine:dodecyl sulfate (PEDOT-C4:DS) and poly(2‐hexyl‐2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxine:dodecyl sulfate (PEDOT-C6:DS). The ratio of the DS anion doped into PEDOT-C4:DS and PEDOT-C6:DS is 0.16 and 0.23, respectively. The contact angle of water on the PEDOT-C4:DS and PEDOT-C6:DS films is 76.6° and 87.7°, respectively, showing hydrophobic properties similar to that with water on PVDF. It facilitated the fully uniform film formation due to excellent surface matching. Peeling force of PEDOT-C4:DS and PEDOT-C6:DS is stronger than the one of PEDOT:PSS‐CNT composite. GIWAX analysis showed that PEDOT-C4:DS formed the highly ordered edge-on structure and PEDOT-C6:DS formed the bimodal orientation consisting of edge-on structure mainly and face-on structure slightly. The electrical conductivity (σPEDOT‐C4:DS=50.0 S cm−1) of PEDOT-C4:DS is 41.7 times higher than that of PEDOT:PSS (σPEDOT:PSS=1.2 S cm−1).</P> <P>The output signals (maximum voltages/currents) of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs, electrode/PVDF/electrode) using these materials as electrodes are PNG-1 (PEDOT:PSS‐CNT composite) 1.25 V/128.5 nA, PNG-2 (PEDOT-C4:DS) 1.54 V/166.0 nA, and PNG-3 (PEDOT-C6:DS) 1.49 V/159.0 nA. Of these, PNG-2 & PNG-3 show maximum piezoelectric output power of 63.0 nW and 59.9 nW at 9 MΩ compared to PNG-1 (41.0 nW at 10 MΩ). They are enhanced up to 53.7%. Sung-Min Yoon,Chun-Won Byun,Shinhyuk Yang,Sang-Hee Ko Park,Doo-Hee Cho,Soon-Won Jung,Seung-Youl Kang,Chi-Sun Hwang IEEE 2010 IEEE electron device letters Vol.31 No.2
<P>A two-transistor-type nonvolatile memory cell composed of one-access and one-memory thin-film transistors (TFTs) was demonstrated. ZnO and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) were employed as semiconducting channels for both TFTs and ferroelectric-gate insulator for memory TFT, respectively, in which the cell structures and fabrication procedures were so carefully designed and optimized as to effectively incorporate both TFTs on the same glass substrate without any critical process damage even below 200°C. The fabricated memory cell successfully showed the write and nondestructive readout operations.</P>

Allergic skin inflammation such as atopic dermatitis is characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, edema, and infiltration with various inflammatory cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone, isolated from Sargassum muticum, have been described in many diseases, but the mechanism by which it modulates the immune system is poorly understood. In this study, the ability of Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone to suppress allergic reactions was investigated using a mouse model of atopic dermatitis. The Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone-treated group showed significantly decreased immunoglobulin E in serum. Also, Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone treatment resulted in a smaller lymph node size with reduced the thickness and length compared to the induction group. In addition, Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone inhibited the expression of interleukin-4, interferon-gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin-stimulated lymphocytes. These results suggest that Apo-9"-fucoxanthinone may be a useful therapeutic strategy for treating chronic inflammatory diseases.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In order to overcome the limitations of single <I>in vitro</I> eye irritation tests, Integrated Approaches to Testing Assessment strategies have been suggested for evaluating eye irritation. This study developed two tiered approaches combining alternative test methods. They were designed in consideration of the solubility property of test chemicals and to use the RhCE tests at final steps. The tiered approach A is composed of the STE, BCOP, HET-CAM or RhCE tests, whereas the tiered approach B is designed to perform simultaneously two <I>in vitro</I> test methods at the first stage and the RhCE test at the final stage. The predictive capacity of the two tiered approaches was estimated using 47 chemicals. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity value of the tiered approach A were 95.7% (45/47), 100% (34/34), and 84.6% (11/13), respectively, whereas those of the tiered approach B were 95.7% (45/47), 97.1% (33/34), and 92.3% (12/13), respectively. The approach A and B were considered to be available methods for distinguishing test chemicals of Category 1 (all 73.3%) and No Category (84.6% and 92.3%), respectively. Especially, the approach B was considered as an efficient method as the Bottom-Up approach, because it predicted correctly test chemicals classified as No Category.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The proposed A and B approaches seem to be efficient strategies for evaluating eye irritation potency as they had higher predictive capacity than that of stand-alone <I>in vitro</I> test method. </LI> <LI> The B approach is considered to be an useful method for Bottom-Up approach in eye irritation IATA. </LI> </UL> </P>
Mesh-Based View Interpolation Using Adaptive Node Insertion and Elimination
Sung-Ho Lee,Seung-Won Jung,Seung-Kyun Kim,Sung-Jea Ko 대한전자공학회 2010 ICEIC:International Conference on Electronics, Inf Vol.1 No.1
This paper describes a triangular mesh based novel virtual view interpolation algorithm. In the conventional mesh based view interpolation, the feature points are extracted and the disparity between images is estimated at the extracted points. Then, image warping is performed by using the estimated disparity values. In order to improve the performance of the conventional view interpolation techniques, we first insert additional feature points at the disparity discontinuity and eliminate unnecessary feature points. Then, the forward and backward warping results are combined by using an adaptive weighting factor. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the visual quality of the interpolated image without excessively increasing the computational complexity.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ocular prostheses are custom-made polymeric inserts that can be placed in anophthalmic sockets for cosmetic rehabilitation. Prosthetic eye wearers have reduced tear amount, and they often experience dry eye symptoms including dryness, irritation, discomfort, and discharge. Most modern ocular prostheses are made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is highly hydrophobic. Previous research has shown that improving the wettability of contact lens materials decreases its wearers discomfort by increasing lubrication. Therefore, hydrophilic modification of PMMA-based ocular prostheses might also improve patient discomfort by improving lubrication. We modified the surfaces of PMMA-based ocular prostheses using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which is hydrophilic. To do this, we used two strategies. One was a “grafting from” method, whereby PEG was polymerized from the PMMA surface. The other was a “grafting to” method, which involved PEG being covalently bonded to an amine-functionalized PMMA surface. Assessments involving the water contact angle, ellipsometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that PEG was successfully introduced to the PMMA surfaces using both strategies. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images revealed that neither strategy caused clinically significant alterations in the PMMA surface morphology. In vitro bacterial adhesion assessments showed that the hydrophilic modifications effectively reduced bacterial adhesion without inducing cytotoxicity. These results imply that hydrophilic surface modifications of conventional ocular prostheses may decrease patient discomfort and ocular prosthesis-related infections.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Surfaces of PMMA-based ocular prosthesis were modified via PEG grafting. </LI> <LI> The hydrophilic surface modifications effectively inhibited bacterial adhesion. </LI> <LI> These modifications of ocular prostheses may decrease discomfort and infections. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix: a rare case report and our 18-year experience.
Ko, Yoon-Ho,Jung, Chan-Kwon,Oh, Soon-Nam,Kim, Tae-Hee,Won, Hye-Sung,Kang, Jin-Hyoung,Kim, Hyung-Jin,Kang, Won-Kyung,Oh, Seong-Taek,Hong, Young-Seon WJG Press 2008 WORLD JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY Vol.14 No.37
<P>Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare malignancy that constitutes < 0.5% of all gastrointestinal neoplasms. Moreover, primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix is an exceedingly rare entity. We have encountered 15 cases of primary appendiceal cancer among 3389 patients who underwent appendectomy over the past 18 years. In the present report, we describe a rare case of primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix with ovarian metastases and unresectable peritoneal dissemination occurring in a 67-year-old female patient. She underwent appendectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with a laparoscopy procedure. She then received palliative systemic chemotherapy with 12 cycles of oxaliplatin, 5-flurorouracil, and leucovorin (FOLFOX-4). The patient currently is well without progression of disease 12 mo after beginning chemotherapy.</P>

<P>The leukocyte common antigen-related receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (LAR-RPTPs) are cellular receptors of heparan sulfate (HS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) proteoglycans that direct axonal growth and neuronal regeneration. LAR-RPTPs are also synaptic adhesion molecules that form <I>trans</I>-synaptic adhesion complexes by binding to various postsynaptic adhesion ligands, such as Slit- and Trk-like family of proteins (Slitrks), IL-1 receptor accessory protein-like 1 (IL1RAPL1), interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein (IL-1RAcP) and neurotrophin receptor tyrosine kinase C (TrkC), to regulate synaptogenesis. Here, we determined the crystal structure of the human LAR-RPTP/IL1RAPL1 complex and found that lateral interactions between neighboring LAR-RPTP/IL1RAPL1 complexes in crystal lattices are critical for the higher-order assembly and synaptogenic activity of these complexes. Moreover, we found that LAR-RPTP binding to the postsynaptic adhesion ligands, Slitrk3, IL1RAPL1 and IL-1RAcP, but not TrkC, induces reciprocal higher-order clustering of <I>trans</I>-synaptic adhesion complexes. Although LAR-RPTP clustering was induced by either HS or postsynaptic adhesion ligands, the dominant binding of HS to the LAR-RPTP was capable of dismantling pre-established LAR-RPTP-mediated <I>trans</I>-synaptic adhesion complexes. These findings collectively suggest that LAR-RPTP clustering for synaptogenesis is modulated by a complex synapse-organizing protein network.</P>
