<B>Purpose: </B>PET-CT is often used to differentiate benign or malignant thyroid incidentalomas. In this retrospective study, we evaluated whether the <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG uptake pattern and PET-CT findings improved accuracy over the standardized uptake value (SUV). <B>Methods:</B> <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET-CT was performed on 2,178 subjects from August, 2004, to October, 2007, in Sung-ae Hospital. PET-CT was performed on 806 patients (37%) with suspected or known nonthyroidal cancer and 1,372 healthy subjects (63%) without a previous history of cancer. We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients, history, standardized uptake value (SUV), ultrasonography, and hormone levels in blood. Thyroidal cancer was confirmed by ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration and pathology after thyroid operation. <B>Results:</B> The prevalence of focal thyroid lesions on PET-CT was 8.8% (191/2178). Thyroid cancer confirmation was 7.9% (15/191). The maximum SUV of malignant thyroid lesions were significantly higher than that of benign lesions (7.00±3.08 vs. 4.49±1.84, P<0.001). <B>Conclusion:</B> PET-CT image interpretation that includes 18F-FDG uptake and SUV is better than PET-CT alone for differentiating benign and malignant lesions. A study on impulsive sound attenuation for a high-pressure blast flowfield

The present work addresses a numerical study on impulsive sound attenuation for a complex high-pressure blast flowfield; these characteristics are generated by a supersonic propellant gas flow through a shock tube into an ambient environment. A numerical solver for analyzing the high pressure blast flowfield is developed in this study. From numerical simulations, wave dynamic processes (which include a first precursor shock wave, a second main propellant shock wave, and interactions in the muzzle blasts) are simulated and discussed. The pressure variation of the blast flowfield is analyzed to evaluate the effect of a silencer. A live firing test is also performed to evaluate four different silencers. The results of this study will be helpful in understanding blast wave and in designing silencers.
Persistence of Chinese Milk Vetch(Astragalus sinicus L.) Seed in Naturally Reseeded CMV-Rice Field

Field experiments were conducted to investigate persistence of Chinese milk vetch(CMV) seed under naturally reseeded CMV-rice cropping systems during the period of 2007~2009. Persistence of the CMV seeds were evaluated in the naturally reseeded CMV-rice field on different tillage methods and soil depths based on the seed number recovered and the seed longevity in soil. Field observation in the naturally reseeded CMV rice field showed that as many as 917~2,185 CMV seeds m-2 were found from 0~15cm soil depth in the rotary tillage and 250~10,105 CMV seeds in minimum tillage rice cultivation in autumn. The recovered seed germinated 25~33%, 23~43% but still had high percentage of hard seed having 64~72% and 51~77%. Field experiment showed that the CMV seedling still emerged even after 2 years of continuous destructive killing of emerged CMV plant by rotary tillage in naturally reseeded CMV-rice field, indicating that CMV seeds persistent at least two years in rice field.

Proximate chemical components (protein, oil, carbohydrate, ash, fiber, and starch) were determined from tubers grown in upland and wetland conditions. The contents of crude protein, oil, carbohydrate, and starch were higher in upland condition than in wetland condition. Eight gibberellins were commonly identified and quantified in leaves and tuber of chufa grown in wetland and upland field during growing season. Gibberellin content was always higher specifically in the leaves and tubers grown in wetland condition than in those grown in upland condition. The current knowledge of gibberellin biosynthesis suggests that the two endogenous bio-active gibberellins both GA1 and GA4 are differently metabolized according to cultural conditions. Major gibberellin biosynthesis route is ascertained dominantly the non C-13 hydroxylation pathway leading GA4 in chufa plants.
Starch Properties of Chinese Yam, Dioscorea opposita Thunb

The starch properties of two chinese yams were evaluated in this study. Amylose content ranged 13.5% to 19.3%. The swelling power of starches varied 10.98% to 11.43%. Water binding capacity in chinese yam starches ranged 93.46% to 107.21%, high WBC was observed in Ma 1. The onset temperature (To) of two chinese yam starches ranged 62.9 to 75.0~circC , peak temperature (Tp) ranged 76.2 to 84.7~circC . The PHI(peak height index) was about 4-fold higher in Anwon cultivar than in Ma 1 cultivar. SEM revealed that starches has a presence of large oval or spherical to small irregular-shape granules. Starch granule size ranged 15.23 to 15.52 ~mum , showing a typical C-type X-ray pattern.

Anthocyanin pigments from three pigmented rice varieties, Hongjinju, Sintoheugmi and Josaengheugchal pigmented by black color, were quantified to evaluate effects of transplanting and harvesting time during seed development. Hongjinju, a rice variety of grains pigmented by red color, contains only two kinds of anthocyanins, delphinidin and cyanidin. Meanwhile, delphinidin, cyanidin, and pelargonidin were identified in Sintoheugmi and Josaengheugchal. Anthocyanidin contents in pigmented rice variety Hongjinju under different planting times were decreased with prolonged harvesting times. The Sintoheukmi showed that cyanidin content was the highest among analyzed pigments during seed development. Two anthocyanins (cyanidin and pelargonidin) in Josaengheugchal recorded highest contents at 20 days after heading in three transplanting times. Cyanidin content was also slightly increased with prolonged transplanting time. Total anthocyanidin contents in Hongjinju were always lower than that of Sintoheukmi and Josaengheukchal. In two rice varieties, Sintoheugmi and Josaengheugchal, a* values were commonly slightly decreased by late transplanting and harvesting times. Changes of a* and b* values in waxy rice varieties, Sintoheugmi and Josaengheugchal varied more than those in Hongjinju. In Josaengheugchal, early harvesting before maturity showed lower brown rice yield and late harvesting in the each transplanting times resulted in highest brown rice yield.
Prevalence of Reflux Esophagitis During 12 Years in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Provinces

Background/Aims: The prevalence of reflux esophagitis (RE) has been reported up to 12% in Korea, and seems being increased. However, epidemiological data for long-term trend are scarce. Moreover, there is no published report about the prevalence of RE in Daegu and Gyeongbuk provinces. Therefore, we analyzed the prevalence of RE during the recent 12 years in Daegu and Gyeongbuk provinces and also analyzed associated risk factors. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 8,446 age and gender adjusted subjects who had visited a health promotion center for health check-up including esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Results: The mean age was 43.3±13.4 years. The overall prevalence of RE was 2.8%. The prevalences of RE in health check up subject from 1997 to 1999, from 2000 to 2002, from 2003 to 2005, and from 2006 to 2008 were 0.3%, 1.2%, 2.8%, and 6.8%, respectively. On the univariate analysis, male gender, high body mass index (BMI), obesity (BMI≥25 kg/m2), and hypertriglyceridemia were significantly related with presence of RE. On the multivariate analysis, male gender and obesity were independent risk factors of RE. Conclusion: The prevalence of RE is increasing recently in Daegu and Gyeongbuk provinces and male gender and obesity are independent risk factors of this disease.(Korean J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2009;15:124-129)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) video technology have extended the range of our experience while providing various 3D applications to our everyday life. Nevertheless, the so-called visual discomfort (VD) problem inevitably degrades the quality of experience in stereoscopic 3D (S3D) displays. Meanwhile, electroencephalography (EEG) has been regarded as one of the most promising brain imaging modalities in the field of cognitive neuroscience. In an effort to facilitate comfort with S3D displays, we propose a new wellness platform using EEG. We first reveal features in EEG signals that are applicable to practical S3D video systems as an index for VD perception. We then develop a framework that can automatically determine severe perception of VD based on the EEG features during S3D video viewing by capitalizing on machine-learning-based braincomputer interface technology. The proposed platform can cooperate with advanced S3D video systems whose stereo baseline is adjustable. Thus, the optimal S3D content can be reconstructed according to a viewer's sensation of VD. Applications of the proposed platform to various S3D industries are suggested, and further technical challenges are discussed for follow-up research.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new concept of wellness platform leading to comfort stereoscopic 3D video is proposed. </LI> <LI> The platform exploits the current EEG-based visual discomfort evaluation techniques. </LI> <LI> Technical challenges of the previous method are mainly overcome for practical use. </LI> <LI> Despite very natural viewing environment, distinct EEG components are elicited. </LI> <LI> Visual discomfort detector automatically provides feedback with 80% accuracy. </LI> </UL> </P>
