<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A detailed study of the structure of the doubly mid-shell nucleus Dy 104 1 66 170 has been carried out, following isomeric and <I>β</I> decay. We have measured the yrast band up to the spin-parity <SUP> J π </SUP> = <SUP> 6 + </SUP> state, the K = 2 <I>γ</I>-vibration band up to the <SUP> 5 + </SUP> state, a low-lying negative-parity band based on a <SUP> 2 − </SUP> state that could be a candidate for the lowest energy octupole vibration state within this nucleus, and a candidate for the <SUP> K π </SUP> = <SUP> 6 + </SUP> two quasi-particle isomer. This state was determined to have an excitation energy of 1643.91(23) keV and a half life of 0.99(4) μs, with a reduced hindrance for its decay to the ground-state band an order of magnitude lower than predicted by <SUB> N p </SUB> <SUB> N n </SUB> systematics. This is interpreted as being due to <I>γ</I>-vibrational mixing from a near degeneracy of the isomer and the <SUP> 6 + </SUP> state of the <I>γ</I> band. Furthermore, the parent nucleus <SUP>170</SUP>Tb has been determined to have a half-life of 0.91 ( − 13 + 18 ) s with a possible spin-parity of <SUP> 2 − </SUP> .</P>

<P>LaMgAl11O19 doped with different concentrations of gadolinium phosphors were synthesized by combustion and characterized using X-Ray diffraction to identify the crystalline phase. Photoluminescence studies on the sample showed emission peaks at 313 and 306 nm with lambda(exi) = 273 nm corresponding to the P-6 (J) -> S-8(7/2) transitions of Gd3+ ions. In phosphors with low dopant concentrations, dominant electron spin resonance lines are observed with g (eff) similar to 1.96, 1.98, 4.2, and 6.0. With increasing concentrations, the spectrum appears to be U-shaped, and main lines are seen at g (eff) similar to 1.98, 2.04, 2.8, 4.1 and 6.2. Distortions in the immediate environment of Gd3+ ions lead to relatively strong crystal fields and the appearance of lines in the low field region of the spectrum.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The neutron-rich isotopes of palladium have attracted considerable interest in terms of the evolution of the N = 82 neutron shell closure and its influence on the <I>r</I>-process nucleosynthesis. In this Letter, we present the first spectroscopic information on the excited states in <SUP>125</SUP>Pd<SUB>79</SUB> and <SUP>127</SUP>Pd<SUB>81</SUB> studied using the EURICA <I>γ</I>-ray spectrometer, following production via in-flight fission of a high-intensity <SUP>238</SUP>U beam at the RIBF facility. New isomeric states with half-lives of 144(4) ns and 39(6) μs have been assigned spins and parities of ( 23 / <SUP> 2 + </SUP> ) and ( 19 / <SUP> 2 + </SUP> ) in <SUP>125</SUP>Pd and <SUP>127</SUP>Pd, respectively. The observed level properties are compared to a shell-model calculation, suggesting the competition between proton excitations and neutron excitations in the proton-hole and neutron-hole systems in the vicinity of the doubly magic nucleus <SUP>132</SUP>Sn.</P>

The level structure of <SUP>172</SUP>Dy has been investigated for the first time by means of decay spectroscopy following in-flight fission of a <SUP>238</SUP>U beam. A long-lived isomeric state with T<SUB>½</SUB>=0.71(5) s and K<SUP>π</SUP>=8<SUP>-</SUP> has been identified at 1278 keV, which decays to the ground-state and γ-vibrational bands through hindered electromagnetic transitions, as well as to the daughter nucleus <SUP>172</SUP>Ho via allowed β decays. The robust nature of the K<SUP>π</SUP>=8<SUP>-</SUP> isomer and the ground-state rotational band reveals an axially-symmetric structure for this nucleus. Meanwhile, the γ-vibrational levels have been identified at unusually low excitation energy compared to the neighboring well-deformed nuclei, indicating the significance of the microscopic effect on the non-axial collectivity in this doubly mid-shell region. The underlying mechanism of enhanced γ vibration is discussed in comparison with the deformed Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation based on a Skyrme energy-density functional.

<P>As high temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables have some merits over conventional cables, several demonstration projects on the HTS cable system are presently under way around the world. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) also initiated an HTS cable project in 2002 with the Korean government's support. A three phase 100 m HTS cable system with a capacity of 50 MVA has been installed at Gochang test yard, located in Chonnbuk province, Korea. The HTS cable system is composed of a 100 m-long cable, two terminations and a cooling system. The rated current is 1,250 A<SUB>rms</SUB> and the rated voltage is 22.9 kV considering compatibility with the conventional power distribution system in Korea. Main purposes of this project are to verify the performance of an HTS cable system and to evaluate the potential of the HTS cable system from the viewpoint of power utilities. The real grid application of the HTS cable system requires the demonstration of system reliability, accumulated operation experiences, and it has to meet the practical needs of the utilities. In such a meaning, this project provides various challenges for KEPCO, and the feedback will be delivered to cable manufacturers. This user initiative test will facilitate the introduction of HTS cable systems into a real grid network. The installation process of the HTS cable system and some results of the preliminary test were presented in this paper.</P>
An Exploration of Professional U.S.-Based Basketball Players Competing in Turkey

In the wake of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games, bas- ketball experienced a surge in popularity as an international sport. Recently, to field more competitive teams, professional leagues around the world have begun to recruit international players, par- ticularly those from the United States (U.S.). Though most leagues still maintain strict caps on the number of players from a single country on a roster, the Turkey Basketball Federation (TBF) recently altered its rules to permit more international players, presenting American players greater opportunities to pursue a lucrative play- ing career in Turkey. Given the change in labor market characteris- tics, this paper examines the 102 U.S. players on 2017–2018 Turkey professional basketball rosters. Descriptive statistics for collegiate performance are presented, as well as logistic regression and net- work analyses that indicate players’ college choice was a crucial factor in their international professional career trajectory with colle- giate conference acting as a bridge to a professional career in Turkey. These results provide context for researchers and practi- tioners in understanding the player statistics, social and cultural forces related to U.S.-professional basketball players in Turkey.
Configuration Dependence of Toroidal Current in Heliotron J

A change of toroidal current by controlling the magnetic configuration has been observed in Heliotron J. The effect of the magnetic configuration on the neoclassical bootstrap current has been theoretically investigated for Heliotron J. It is found that the bumpy field component (B04) plays an important role in changing both the value and the direction of the bootstrap current in Heliotron J. The bootstrap current density is reversed at the small minor radius first, and then the net bootstrap current changes its direction from a positive value to a negative value as B04 decreases.

<P>A comprehensive examination of the synthesis of single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) from statistical copolymers of n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and 3-butenyl methacrylate (3BMA), i.e., P(BMA-co-3BMA)s, via the intramolecular olefin metathesis reaction under high dilution conditions is described. The olefin metathesis reaction of P(BMA-co-3BMA) using Grubbs' 2nd generation catalyst in CH2Cl2 efficiently gave the corresponding SCNPs under mild conditions. We achieved the size-controlled synthesis of the SCNPs by adjusting the following factors: (1) the olefin content in the precursor, (2) the molecular weight of the precursor, and (3) the solvent quality of the reaction medium. The hydrodynamic radius and the intrinsic viscosity of the resultant SCNPs were investigated by DLS and viscometric measurements, respectively, which provided further evidence of SCNP formation with controlled diameters. Furthermore, the above-established intramolecular olefin metathesis approach was successfully applied to poly(acrylate), poly(styrene), and poly(ester) precursors, which proved that the present approach could be applied to a wide range of olefin-containing precursors to give SCNPs with various functional groups.</P>
