        Dextromethorphan Protect the Valproic Acid Induced Downregulation of Neutrophils in Patients with Bipolar Disorder

        Objective: Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant and commonly long term used as a mood stabilizer for patients with mood disorders. However its chronic effects on the hematological changes were noticed and need to be further evaluated. In this study, we evaluated, in Taiwanese Han Chinese patients with bipolar disorders (BD), the chronic effects of VPA or VPA plus dextromethorphan (DM) on the hematological molecules (white blood cell [WBCs], red blood cells [RBCs], hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets). Methods: In a 12-week, randomized, double-blind study, we randomly assigned BD patients to one of three groups: VPA plus either placebo (VPA+P, n = 57) or DM (30 mg/day, VPA+DM30, n = 56) or 60 mg/day (VPA+DM60, n = 53). The Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were used to evaluate symptom severity, and the hematological molecules were checked. Results: Paired t test showed that the WBC, neutrophils, platelets and RBCs were significantly lowered after 12 weeks of VPA+P or VPA+DM30 treatment. VPA+DM60 represented the protective effects in the WBCs, neutrophils, and RBCs but not in the platelets. We further calculated the changes of each hematological molecules after 12 weeks treatment. We found that combination use of DM60 significantly improved the decline in neutrophils induced by the long-term VPA treatment. Conclusion: Hematological molecule levels were lower after long-term treatment with VPA. VPA+DM60, which yielded the protective effect in hematological change, especially in the neutrophil counts. Thus, DM might be adjunct therapy for maintaining hematological molecules in VPA treatment.

        Effects of spray axis incident angle on heat transfer performance of rhombus-pitch shell-and-tube interior spray evaporator

        An interior spray method is proposed for enhancing the heat transfer performance of a compact rhombus-pitch shell-and-tube spray evaporator. The experimental results show that the shell-side heat transfer coefficient obtained using the proposed spray method is significantly higher than that achieved in a conventional flooded-type evaporator. Four different spray axis incident angles (0°, 45°, 60° and 75°) are tested in order to investigate the effect of the spray inclination angle on the heat transfer performance of the spray evaporator system. It is shown that the optimal heat transfer performance is obtained using a spray axis incident angle of 60°.

        Prescribed Performance Adaptive Neural Tracking Control for Strict-feedback Markovian Jump Nonlinear Systems with Time-varying Delay

        A prescribed performance adaptive neural tracking control problem is investigated for strict-feedbackMarkovian jump nonlinear systems with time-varying delay. First, a new prescribed performance constraint variableis proposed to generate the virtual control that forces the tracking error to fall within prescribed boundaries. Combining with the approximation capability of neural networks and backstepping design, the adaptive trackingcontroller is designed. The designed controller is independent on time delay by constructing appropriate Lyapunovfunctions to offset the unknown time-varying delays. It is proved that the closed-loop system is uniformly ultimatelybounded in probability, and that both steady-state and transient-state performances are guaranteed. Finally,simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

        Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Comorbid Major Depression and Heart Rate Variability: A Case-Control Study in Taiwan

        Objective Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) has been reported in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but the results are mixed. Little is known about the impact of comorbid major depression (MD) on HRV in GAD patients. Both issues necessitate further investigation. Methods Twenty unmedicated, physically healthy GAD patients, 20 GAD patients with a secondary diagnosis of MD, 40 MD patients and 60 matched controls were recruited. We used the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale to assess anxiety and depression severity, respectively. Cardiac autonomic function was evaluated by measuring HRV parameters. Frequency-domain indices of HRV were obtained. Results Three patient groups had more anxiety and depression symptoms than control subjects, but heart rates (HRs) were significantly elevated only in GAD patients with comorbid depression. Relative to controls, GAD patients had reduced HRV while GAD patients with comorbid depression displayed the greatest reductions in HRV among three patients groups. Correlation analyses revealed anxiety/depression severity significantly associated with HRs, variance, LF-HRV and HF-HRV. However, separately analyzing among individual groups and adjusting for HRV-associated covariables rendered the correlations non-significant. Conclusion Our results suggest that reduction in HRV is a psychophysiological marker of GAD and individuals with comorbid GAD and MD may be distinguished based on psychophysiological correlates (for example, HF-HRV) from non-comorbid GAD patients. Taken into account that comorbid depression may confer increased risks for cardiovascular events in GAD patients, this subgroup of GAD patients may benefit better from cardiovascular risk reduction strategies.

        The Quantitative Evaluation of Automatic Segmentation in Lumbar Magnetic Resonance Images

        Objective: This study aims to overcome challenges in lumbar spine imaging, particularly lumbar spinal stenosis, by developing an automated segmentation model using advanced techniques. Traditional manual measurement and lesion detection methods are limited by subjectivity and inefficiency. The objective is to create an accurate and automated segmentation model that identifies anatomical structures in lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging scans. Methods: Leveraging a dataset of 539 lumbar spinal stenosis patients, the study utilizes the residual U-Net for semantic segmentation in sagittal and axial lumbar spine magnetic resonance images. The model, trained to recognize specific tissue categories, employs a geometry algorithm for anatomical structure quantification. Validation metrics, like Intersection over Union (IOU) and Dice coefficients, validate the residual U-Net’s segmentation accuracy. A novel rotation matrix approach is introduced for detecting bulging discs, assessing dural sac compression, and measuring yellow ligament thickness. Results: The residual U-Net achieves high precision in segmenting lumbar spine structures, with mean IOU values ranging from 0.82 to 0.93 across various tissue categories and views. The automated quantification system provides measurements for intervertebral disc dimensions, dural sac diameter, yellow ligament thickness, and disc hydration. Consistency between training and testing datasets assures the robustness of automated measurements. Conclusion: Automated lumbar spine segmentation with residual U-Net and deep learning exhibits high precision in identifying anatomical structures, facilitating efficient quantification in lumbar spinal stenosis cases. The introduction of a rotation matrix enhances lesion detection, promising improved diagnostic accuracy, and supporting treatment decisions for lumbar spinal stenosis patients.

      • ppGalNAc T1 as a Potential Novel Marker for Human Bladder Cancer

        Objectives: To investigate the effect of glycopeptide-preferring polypeptide GalNAc transferase 1 (ppGalNAc T1 ) targeted RNA interference (RNAi) on the growth and migration of human bladder carcinoma EJ cells in vitro and in vivo. Methods: DNA microarray assays were performed to determine ppGalNAc Ts(ppGalNAc T1-9) expression in human bladder cancer and normal bladder tissues. We transfected the EJ bladder cancer cell line with well-designed ppGalNAc T1 siRNA. Boyden chamber and Wound healing assays were used to investigate changes of shppGalNAc T1-EJ cell migration. Proliferation of shppGalNAc T1-EJ cells in vitro was assessed using [3H]-thymidine incorporation assay and soft agar colony formation assays. Subcutaneous bladder tumors in BALB/c nude mice were induced by inoculation of shppGalNAc T1-EJ cells and after inoculation diameters of tumors were measured every 5 days to determine gross tumor volumes. Results: ppGalNAc T1 mRNA in bladder cancer tissues was 11.2-fold higher than in normal bladder tissues. When ppGalNAc T1 expression in EJ cells was knocked down through transfection by pSUPER-shppGalNAc T1 vector, markedly reduced incorporation of [3H]-thymidine into DNA of EJ cells was observed at all time points compared with the empty vector transfected control cells. However, ppGalNAc T1 knockdown did not significantly inhibited cell migration (only 12.3%). Silenced ppGalNAc T1 expression significantly inhibited subcutaneous tumor growth compared with the control groups injected with empty vector transfected control cells. At the end of observation course (40 days), the inhibitory rate of cancerous growth for ppGalNAc T1 knockdown was 52.5%. Conclusion: ppGalNAc T1 might be a potential novel marker for human bladder cancer. Although ppGalNAc T1 knockdown caused no remarkable change in cell migration, silenced expression significantly inhibited proliferation and tumor growth of the bladder cancer EJ cell line.

      • Study on the Heterogeneous Reaction of SO₂ and NO₂ on Coal Ash

        Harmful substances such as sulfur dioxide produced by coal combustion are the main source of air pollution. The heterogeneous reaction of polluting gases and coal ash particles has an important impact on atmospheric pollution. The sulphate formed by the oxidation of SO2 from coal combustion is combined with the dust generated by coal combustion, resulting in a large amount of adsorbed water on the surface becoming agglomerated nucleus, which forms a dense fog, affects the visibility of the atmosphere, and endangers human health. The existing research results show that serious damage to personnel is not only polluted gases such as SO2 and primary particulate matter directly discharged from coal combustion, but mainly secondary particles such as sulfate and nitrate formed by chemical reaction of SO2 and NO2 on the surface of particulate matter. Studying the formation process of secondary particulate matter on the surface of coal ash is crucial to improve the atmospheric environment around the power plant and other institutions. The heterogeneous reaction of mixed gas SO2, NO2 and air on the surface of the coal ash particles was investigated based on the laboratory-built aerosol reactor under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Experimental studies have found that the relative humidity, light conditions and gas concentration will affect the process of SO2 and NO2 gas in the heterogeneous transformation of coal ash into secondary particles.

      • Follow-up Study on the Graduates of the Technical Teacher Education Program of Chungnam National university

        한국 정부와 독일정부는 1979년 충남대학교에 공업교사 훈련 프로그램을 지원하기로 결정하였고, 1981년 이후 독일정부는 충남대학교 공업화학교육, 기계공학교육, 기술교육 분야의 교사교육 프로그램을 지원해 왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 상기 프로그램의 효과를 평가하고, 나아가 이 프로그램이 한국의 실업계 고등학교 요구에 적합한지를 파악하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 1991년 6월에 전국 53개 국공립 공업계 고등학교 교사로 재직중인 충남대학교 기계공학교육과와 공업화학교육과 출신교사 367명 전원에게 설문지를 발송하여 자료를 수집하였다. 반송된 276매의 자료를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 1. 국공립 공업계 고등학교교사로 재직중인 졸업생은 기계공학교육과와 공업화학교육과 전체 졸업생 수의 22%에 불과했다. 2. 교사 임용전에 1년 이상 대기한 졸업생은 15% 미만이었으며, 대부분 학교 외의 현장 경험없이 교사로 재직하기 시작하였다. 3. 대부분의 응답자는 교직 경력이 10년 정도인데, 이 중 95%가 평교사였다. 4. 응답자들은 수업, 수업준비, 학생상담, 행정업무 처리 등에 평균 주당 39시간을 쓰고 있었다. 5. 교사임용 초기에 일부 교사들은 학생상담, 수업 등에 어려움을 겪었으며, 근무환경이나 학교에서의 인간관계에 대하여 불만을 표명하였다. 6. 응답교사의 절반정도는 다른 학교로 전근하기를 원했다. 7. 교사 자격연수에 대해서는 소수의 교사만이 응답을 하였는데, 가장 관심을 나타내는 부분은 교육학과 공학 이론 및 실험 부분이었다. 8. 교사가 되고싶은 후배들에게 해주고 싶은 충고는 실습지도능력과 교사로서의 직업윤리관을 확고히 해야하며, 교양과목을 좀더 열심히 공부할 것 등이다. 9. 40% 이상의 교사들이 재학시 외국인 교수들에게 수강한 경험이 있었는데, 교수방법 및 내용이 매우 성실하고 설득력 있었으며 강의 분위기가 좋았다고 평가하였다.
