Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance (IR). T2DM is correlated with obesity and most T2DM medications have been developed for enhancing insulin sensitivity. Silk protein fibroin (SPF) from spiders has been suggested as an attractive biomaterial for medical purposes. We generated transgenic rice (TR) expressing SPF and fed it to diabetic BKS.Cg-m+/+Leprdb mice to monitor the changes in blood glucose levels and adipose tissue proteins associated with energy metabolism and insulin signaling. In the present study, the adipocyte size in abdominal fat in TR-SPF-fed mice was remarkably smaller than that of the control. Whereas the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-activated protein kinase and insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) protein levels were increased in abdominal adipose tissues after TR-SPF feeding, levels of six-transmembrane protein of prostate 2 (STAMP2) proteins decreased. Phosphorylation of AMPK at threonine 172 and IRS1 at serine 307 and tyrosine 632 were both increased in adipose tissues from TR-SPFfed mice. Increased expression and phosphorylation of IRS1 at both serine 307 and tyrosine 632 in adipose tissues indicated that adipocytes obtained from abdominal fat in TR-SPF-fed mice were more susceptible to insulin signaling than that of the control. STAMP2 protein levels decreased in adipose tissues from TR-SPF-fed mice, indicating that STAMP2 proteins were reducing adipocytes that were undergoing lipolysis. Taken together, this study showed that TR-SPF was effective in reducing blood glucose levels in diabetic mice and that concurrent lipolysis in abdominal adipocytes was associated with alterations of AMPK, IRS1, and STAMP2. Increased IRS1 expression and its phosphorylation by TR-SFP were considered to be particularly important in the induction of lipolysis in adipocytes, as well as in reducing blood glucose levels in this animal model.

One-dimensional metallic nanowires (NWs) have been studied for flexible transparent conductors to replace indium tin oxide due to their brittleness and high costs. Flash-induced heating methods have received attention as a new technique for next-generation flexible electrodes, because of their advantages such as fast processing, large area processability, and compatibility with roll-to-roll manufacturing. Herein we report flexible AgNWs conductors with outstanding optoelectronic properties and robust adhesion on flexible substrates. Localized photothermic energy could occur at the junctions of AgNWs by flash light, resulting in an entirely welded AgNW network. At the same time, the interface of AgNWs and underlying PET film could be melted by the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of flashlight, which increased the adhesion of the AgNWs by 310 %. To confirm the practical uses of our technique, we successfully fabricated a high-quality transparent energy harvester by using flash-welded AgNW network.

The optogenetic brain stimulation system has attracted significant attention, as it can provide powerful solutions for continuous and real-time monitoring of various neurological diseases such as stroke, epilepsy, and dementia. A number of research groups have developed diverse optogenetic modulating systems, however, the limited lifespan of traditional batteries requires periodic (every 7 years) replacement surgery for optogenetic treatment. Herein, we demonstrated a selfpowered optogenetic brain stimulation system by scavenging wasted magnetic energy and operating flexible micro lightemitting diodes (f-μLEDs). Through the flash-induced stamping technology, a micro/nanostructured surface was formed on the triboelectric Nylon film, which was applied for outstanding performance magneto-mechano-triboelectric nanogenerator (MMTENG). The flash-treated MMTENG generated an open-circuit voltage of 870 V and a short-circuit current of 145 μA under a 7 Oe magnetic field, which was successfully operating an f-μLED array. The developed optogenetic brain stimulation system was smoothly inserted under the skull of the mouse without fatal damage of brain tissues.

Purpose To minimize the radiation exposure during the computed tomography (CT) examination, the practical amount of radiation exposure was reviewed in terms of anthropometric characteristics of the examinees and the methods of exposure control - automatic and manual. Materials and Methods During 5 months from March to July 2006, radiation exposure data of 200 examinees who had either chest or abdominal CT examination were collected from 16 channel slice multidetector row CT (16 slice MDCT, equipment A) and 64 channel slice multidetector row CT (64 slice MDCT, equipment B) in Hwasun Chonnam national University Hospital. Data were analyzed in relation to examinee’s body mass index (BMI), age, sex and noise index. The difference of radiation exposure between automatic and manual exposure control were also analyzed respectively Results Of total 400 examinees (267 men and 133 women), the amount of radiation exposure was significantly correlated with BMI, body weight and the noise index. The noise index was positively related with body weight. In both equipments, the automatic exposure generally showed lower radiation exposure than manual exposure. The radiation exposure in abdominal examination in e quipment A, however, showed higher radiation exposure in the automatic exposure than in the manual exposure, although statistically insignificant. The exposure levels were higher in the automatic exposure in the 82 percent of abdominal examinees for the equipment A. Conclusion Generally speaking, the automatic exposure method are superior to the manual exposure method to minimize the amount of radiation exposure during the CT examination. But this is not always the case. This study suggest that all the exposure protocol for the CT examination be reviewed through practical evaluation at the actual settings.

길거리를 걷다 보면 굳이 찾지 않아도 바닥에 쓰레기가 버려져 있는 걸 볼 수 있다. 플라스틱 컵, 과자봉지, 담배꽁초 등 일상생활에서 사용하고 자연스럽게 버려지는 것들이다. 이렇게 버려지는 이유는 여러 가지가 있다. 가장 큰 원인은 길거리에 쓰레기통이 배치되어 있지 않기 때문일 것이다. 예산이 부족하거나, 관리하는 인력의 부족 등이 있을 것이다. 그래서 우리 ‘편하조’는 사람들의 사소한 생각을 바꾸기 위한 식상한 쓰레기통을 대신할 수 있는 편하고 흥미를 유발하는 쓰레기통을 만들기로 했다.

Antiinflammatory activities of the solvent fractionates of several herbal medicines were investigated and SKI306X was prepared from the active principles of three herbal medicines, Prunella vulgaris, Trichosanthes kirilowii and Clematis mandshurica. SKI306X was shown to have strong inhibitory effects on acetic acid-induced pain, carrageenan-induced paw edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis. LD50 of SKI306X was more than 5g/kg in rat, so generally nontoxic. Chemical analysis revealed that oleanolic acid and rutin, which are known to have various antiinflammatory activities, were contained in it. These results suggest SKI306X may become a useful drug for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

We present a brief account of the theory of diffusion-influenced kinetics of reactions involving polymers. The review will be based on the recent contributions from the authors. Both intrapolymer and interpolymer reactions are considered, and the effects of various physical factors, such as the chain length, chain stiffness, and hydrodynamic interactions, are described within a unified theoretical framework.

The acetone precipitates of the hot water extract of Torilis fructus showed strong hemostatic activity which was not inhibited by aspirin. This activity was not through platelet activation but possibly through activating some coagulation factors in plasma. The hemostatic action of the precipitates was not active by oral adminitration and no behavioral toxicity appeared in treated mice. However, mice treated with the acetone precipitates through tail vein showed serious tremor and then were killed probably by the thrombus produced in the body. The hemostatic activity was still remained after treatment with beta-glucosidase, beta-galactosidase, alpha-amylase, subtilisin BPN'', or trypsin but completely lost by acid hydrolysis. The active components seemed to be a complex of unidentified macromolecules to which some phenolic compounds were strongly bound.

N/A On 11 June 1991, eggs from the brood stock of small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) were artificially fertilized using the standard dry method and were hatched. Each of the fertilized eggs (1.1-1.2 mm in diameter) had an oil globule and was transparent and buoyant. The fertilized eggs hatched in a range of water temperatures (17.5-20.3℃) 44 hrs after fertilization. The total lengths of the newly hatched larvae were 3.1-3.3 mm, and these hatchlings had 31 myotomes (10+21). Melanophores and yellow-brown chromatophores were concentrated on the head, at the ventral part of the yolk, and in the middle of the tail. Four days after hatching, the larvae completely absorbed the yolk and became flexions of 5.1-5.5 mm in total length. Fifteen days after hatching, one spine (the anterior tip of the maxillary) appeared in the upper jaw and three spines developed at the upper parts of the eyes and on the posterior part of the head. At this stage, the larvae were approximately 8.3 mm long. Thirty-nine days after hatching, juveniles (1.9-3.4 mm in total length) had a pointed tail fin. By 66 days after hatching, the juvenile fish (about 4.0-6.5 mm in total length) were similar to adult fish in body shape. The larvae of L. polyactis could be distinguished from those of L. croacea by two distinct characteristics: the large number of vertebrae (28-29), and a relatively small bony ridge on the occipital region of the head.
