General Introduction of American Ginseng Indigenous in USA and Canada
Park,Chung-Heon,Bang,Kyung-Hwan,Park,Chun-Geun,Sung,Jung-Sook,Song,Won-Seob 한국자원식물학회 2003 Plant Resources Vol.6 No.3
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) is herbaceous perennial plants indigenous to North American forests. This is highly valued as medicinal herbs with a long history of collection from wild populations since 1716. Wild American ginseng distributed from Quebec in Canada to northern Florida in USA. A heavy concentration is found in the Appalachian mountains, although wild American ginseng is considered endangered. The price paid for field cultivated ginseng has dropped dramatically in the past 10 years, while the price for wild or woods cultivated ginseng has rised significantly. The price curve for ginseng resembles a roller coaster, reflecting not only supply and demand but many other factors. This information will be useful to understand American ginseng compared to Korean ginseng.
Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia Caused by Arachnoid Cyst in the Cerebellopontine Angle
Cho, Tack-Geun,Nam, Taek-Kyun,Park, Seung-Won,Hwang, Sung-Nam The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2011 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.49 No.5
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a relatively rare condition characterized by severe, paroxysmal episodes of lancinating pain in the tongue, throat, ear, and tonsil. This disorder is assumed to be due to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve by vascular structures. A 47-year-old woman complaining of sharp and lancinating pain in the right periauricular and submandibular areas visited our hospital. Swallowing, chewing, and lying on her right side triggered the pain. Her neurologic examination revealed no specific abnormalities. The results of routine hematologic and blood chemistry studies were all within normal limits. Carbamazepine and gabapentin were given, but her symptoms persisted. Her pain was temporarily relieved only by narcotic pain medication. MRI showed an arachnoid cyst located in the right cerebellomedullary cistern extending to the cerebellopontine cistern. Cyst removal was performed via a right retrosigmoid approach. Lateral suboccipital craniotomy was performed using the right park-bench position. After opening the dura and cerebellopontine angle, the arachnoid cyst was exposed. The arachnoid cyst was compressing the flattened lower cranial nerves at the right jugular fossa. Her symptoms resolved postoperatively. Two months after the operation, she was completely free from her previous symptoms.

The present study investigated the habitats of Korean fir trees (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson) on Mt. Baekwun (Baekwun-san), determined the current distribution, quantified the contribution of biological and nonbiological environmental factors affecting the distribution, derived actual and potential habitats, presented a plan for the establishment of protected areas, applied RCP 8.5 climate change scenario to analyze the effects of climate change on the future distribution of Korean fir trees, and predicted future potential habitats. According to the results of the study, 3,325 Korean fir trees (DBH >= 2.5 cm) inhabited Mt. Baekwun, and their distribution area was approximately 150 ha. Populations of Korean fir trees were confirmed to exist at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and were distributed up to 1,200 m. Based on potential distribution, areas appropriate for habitation by Korean fir trees were analyzed to be 450 ha, three times the current distribution area, with a focus on Sang Peak (Sang-bong), Eokbul Peak (Eokbul-bong), Ddari Peak (Ddari-bong), and Dosol Peak (Dosol-bong). The forest stands near Sang Peak, the main peak, were evaluated as those with the most appropriate potential for the habitation of Korean fir trees, and populations of the trees tended to prefer the northern slope rather than the southern slope. When climate change scenario RCP 8.5 was applied and future potential distribution was analyzed, the habitats were expected to decrease in area to 20 ha by 2050, with a focus on Sang Peak, and areas appropriate for habitation were predicted not to exist by 2080. Judging from such results, as global warming accelerates, the habitats of Korean fir trees are clearly expected to move from lowlands to highlands.

This paper designs and implements 30W DCDC converters with high reliability and temperature characteristics for military applications, considering US military standards (MIL-STD). Analyzes the performance and specifications of conventional military application products and details MIL-STD items. The proposed converter is designed for guided weapons and aircraft, and it is designed with active clamp forward converter (ACFC) topology for high efficiency. To achieve high reliability, environmental impact test, device selection with excellent temperature characteristics and temperature distribution analysis are performed. The validity of the proposed ACFC for the MIL-STD specification is verified through simulation and experiments. In addition, for comparison with conventional military products, the final designed ACFC performs a performance comparison test with the IR Corporation"s ATR2805S product.

Gouda cheese, one of most popular cheeses in the Korea, has been produced from only pasteurized milk in Korean dairy farms. Recently, it has become legally possible to produce ripened cheese manufactured with raw milk in Korea. In the present study, we investigated the physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of Gouda cheese manufactured with raw (R-GC) or pasteurized milk (P-GC) during manufacturing and ripening. Particularly, this study characterized the bacterial community structure of two cheese types, which are produced without pasteurization during ripening based on next generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. During ripening, protein and fat content increased slightly, whereas moisture content decreased in both P-GC and R-GC. At the 6 wk of ripening, R-GC became softer and smoother and hence, the values of hardness and gumminess, chewiness in R-GC was lower than that of P-GC. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the bacterial genera used a starter cultures, namely Lactococcus and Leuconostoc were predominant in both P-GC and R-GC. Moreover, in R-GC, the proportion of coliform bacteria such as Escherichia, Leclercia, Raoultella, and Pseudomonas were detected initially but not during ripening. Taken together, our finding indicates the potential of manufacturing with Gouda cheese from raw milk and the benefits of next generation sequencing for microbial community composition during cheese ripening.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>For commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the loading amount of Pt-based cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) needs be significantly reduced. In this study, we propose Pt catalysts supported by an iron/nitrogen-doped porous carbon (FeNC) nanostructure having a catalytic activity for ORR in order to significantly reduce the utilization of Pt. The FeNC nanostructure was prepared using a template method with 50 and 500 nm SiO2 beads and phthalocyanine as a dopant and carbon source. The nanosized Pt catalysts with different loading weights (5, 10, 20, 30 wt%) were uniformly deposited on the FeNC with a bimodal porous crystalline doped carbon nanostructure using an electron beam radiation method. In particular, the cathode catalyst having 5 wt% Pt on FeNC (Pt5/FeNC) exhibited enhanced ORR mass activities of 2.19 and 2.58 A mgPt −1 at 0.9 V measured by electrochemical half cells in acidic and alkaline media, respectively, compared to a commercial Pt(20 wt%)/C (Pt20/C). Furthermore, Pt5/FeNC showed a higher mass activity of 18.76 A mgPt −1 at 0.6 V as a unit cell performance than that of the commercial catalyst. The improved ORR activity of Pt/FeNC might be synergistically attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on the bimodal porous doped carbon nanostructure, the interaction (electronic effect) between the metallic catalyst and the doped support, and the dual catalytic effect of both Pt and the doped carbon nanostructure.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Doped mesoporous carbon nanostructure (FeNC) were synthesized using template method. </LI> <LI> Pt nanoparticles were deposited on the FeNC via an electron beam irradiation method. </LI> <LI> Pt/FeNC showed highly improved ORR activity in acid & alkaline media. </LI> <LI> The improved activity was due to synergistic effect between Pt nanoparticle and FeNC. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Background: Erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) is characterized by expanding erythematous rings. In most cases, underlying diseases such as infection, drug and pregnancy accompanied EAC. A previous study reported the pathogenesis of hypersensitivity reaction to fungal infection. In another study, fungal infection was evident in 48 of 66 patients with EAC. Objectives: The etiology and related disease in most cases of EAC is unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between EAC and underlying cutaneous fungal infections. Methods: In a retrospective study, 100 EAC patients confirmed by clinical or histopathological examination were enrolled. The patients` electronic medical records were reviewed. Results: 26 EAC patients had cutaneous fungal infection, such as tinea pedis and tinea unguium. Of them, 16 patients underwent fungal treatment. 9 of 16 patients showed improvement of EAC lesion with fungal treatment. 6 patients had history of other infections, 6 had endocrine disorders, 5 had drug history, 5 were pregnant and 1 had malignancy. Conclusion: EAC is thought to be associated with fungal infection. This study showed that the high prevalence of cutaneous fungal infection and the some response to fungal treatment in EAC patients. However, it was difficult to confirm a direct association in this study. In the future, there is a need for a larger cohort study including allergic confirmation test to prove causal association between EAC and fungal infection.
