Intercollegiate Athletics: A Unique Segment of the Sport Industry

Intercollegiate athletics in the United States is a unique educational opportunity for participants, a passion-inducing bond for the student body, and a branding and development vehicle for the university. The purpose of this paper is to introduce this unique segment of the sport industry to those who may not be familiar with the US-based system of intercollegiate athletics. A very brief history of the evolution of intercollegiate athletics in the United States, an overview of the governance structure, and a description of some unique challenges and benefits of college athletics are provided.
A European lens upon adult and lifelong learning in Asia

In this article, we seek to assess the extent to which adult and lifelong learning policies and practices in Asia have distinctiveness by comparison to those found in western societies, through an analysis of inter-governmental, national and regional policies in the field. We also inform our study through the analysis of the work of organisations with an international remit with a specific focus on Asia and Europe. In one case, the Asia–Europe Meeting Lifelong Learning (ASEM LLL) Hub has a specific function of bringing together researchers in Asia and Europe. In another, the PASCAL Observatory has had a particular focus on one aspect of lifelong learning, that of learning cities, with a concentration in its work on Asia and Europe. We focus on learning city development as a particular case of distinction in the field. We seek to identify the extent to which developments in the field in Asia have influenced and have been influenced by practices elsewhere in world, especially in Europe, and undertake our analysis using theories of societal learning/the learning society, learning communities and life-deep learning. We complement our analysis through assessment of material contained in three dominant journals in the field, the International Journal of Lifelong Education, the International Review of Education and Adult Education Quarterly, each edited in the west.

This paper explores the expression of power in the built environment of ancient cities, using two case studies from the middle Iron Age (early first millennium BCE) ancient Near East: the capital cities of the Syro-Anatolian city-states in southern Turkey and northern Syria, and those of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in northern Iraq. A functional approach to urbanism, which defines cities based on their influence in the surrounding region, leads to the conclusion that although the expression of power in these two cultures' major cities is superficially similar (though different in scale), incorporating the surrounding landscape into the discussion reveals how empires are more comprehensive than city-states in creating entire landscapes that communicate power in their built environment.
MULTIDIMENSIONAL TEACHING: THOUGHTFUL WAYS OF CREATING A FLIPPED CLASSROOM

The "flipped" or "inverted" classroom, in which students study lecture-type material at home and do their "homework" in the classroom, has been the subject of research, particularly in the area of student achievement. Yet Bishop and Verleger (2013) state the need for an underlying theory to the practice. The purpose of this paper is to explore "multidimensional teaching," the authors' extension of the two-dimensional "flipped" classroom concept in light of Cambourne's (1995) Conditions for Learning. One author's math class for pre-service teachers was taught in two styles, a more traditional lecture format and in the \inverted" format. Students in the "flipped" format achieved at a higher level. Moreover, students' open-ended comments reveal that Cambourne's Conditions for Learning were implicit to the teaching practice. The authors suggest that practitioners of this style of teaching should deliberately develop student-centered practices, such as those mentioned by Cambourne, in order to retain the power that this teaching style currently has.
THE DISTRIBUTION MODELS OF THERMAL AND NON-THERMAL RADIO CONTINUUM EMISSION IN THE GALACTIC DISK

In the past, it. was very difficult to distinguish thermal and non-thermal emission. Broadbent et a1. (1989) has developed a new technique with the help of the IRAS 60 micron emission. The distribution of non-thermal or synchrotron emission in the Galactic disk has been modeled from the 408 MHz all sky survey of Haslam et a1. (1982) after removal of the thermal component.. At. 408 MHz, t.here is very little absorption in the interstellar medium and the distribution along the line-of-sight. is inferred mainly from its presumed relationship to other tracers of spiral structure via a. number of fitted parameters. But. at lower frequencies, free-free absorption becomes important and can give some direct. information on the line of sight. distribution. We have modeled the thermal electron density according to the spiral arm models and the distribution of ionized hydrogen in the Galactic plane by Lockman (1976) and Cersosimo et. al. (1989) and have made predictions to compare with the surveys of Dwarakanath et al. (1990) at. 34.5 MHz and .Jones and Finlay (1974) at 29.9 MHz. The result confirms that the absorption model of the synchrotron emissivity in the Galactic plane is broadly corrected and illustrates the potential of the absorption technique.
