Background/AimsThe gastrointestinal symptom of diabetes mellitus, chronic constipation, seriously affects patients’ life. Whereas, the mechanism of chronic constipation is still ambiguous, resulting in a lack of effective therapies for this symptom. As a part of the smooth muscle cells, interstitial cells of Cajal, and platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha-positive (PDGFRα+) cells syncytium (SIP syncytium), PDGFRα+ cells play an important role in regulating colonic motility. According to our previous study, in PDGFRα+ cells in colons of diabetic mice, the function of the P2Y1 purinergic receptor/type 3 small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK3) channel signaling pathway is strengthened, which may lead to colonic dysmotility. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in SK3 channel properties of PDGFRα+ cells in diabetic mice. MethodsWhole-cell patch clamp, Western blotting, superoxide dismutase activity measurement, and malondialdehyde measurement were main methods in the present study. ResultsThe present study revealed that when dialysed with low calcium ion (Ca2+) solution, the SK3 current density was significantly decreased in PDGFRα+ cells from diabetic mice. However, the SK3 current density in PDGFRα+ cells was enhanced from diabetic mice when dialysed with high Ca2+ solution. Moreover, hydrogen peroxide-treatment mimicked this phenomenon in SK3 transgenic HEK293 cells. The subunit of SK3 channels, protein kinase CK2, was up-regulated in colonic muscle layers and hydrogen peroxide-treated HEK293 cells. Additionally, protein phosphatase 2A, the subunit of SK3 channels, was not changed in streptozotocin-treated mouse colons or hydrogen peroxide-treated HEK293 cells. ConclusionThe diabetic oxidative stress-induced upregulation of CK2 contributed to modulating SK3 channel sensitivity to Ca2+ in colonic PDGFRα+ cells, which may result in colonic dysmotility in diabetic mice.

The purpose of this present study was to objectively evaluate gastrointestinal and bone marrow AEs after administration of various chemotherapeutic agents in canines with malignant tumors, using the Veterinary Cooperative Oncology Group-Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (VCOG-CTCAE), which includes descriptive terminology used for adverse events (AEs) reported in dogs and cats. The medical records of 42 dogs with malignant tumor that underwent chemotherapy were reviewed retrospectively. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of gastrointestinal AEs among the 5 chemotherapeutic agents (vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, lomistine, and carboplatin). The prevalence of bone marrow AEs was significantly higher after administration of lomustine than after administration of vincristine or doxorubicin. Grade 1 AEs of the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow were most often observed after administration of various chemotherapeutic agents. Delayed and cumulative myelosuppression of lomustine in some dogs receiving regular blood examination were identified. The findings of this study will help predict possible gastrointestinal and bone marrow AEs due to the use of chemotherapeutic agents to treat canines with malignant tumors.

Background: There are few choices for treatment of advanced cancer patients who do not respond to or tolerate conventional anti-cancer treatments. Therefore this study aimed to deploy the benefits and clinical efficacy of continuous dendritic cell-cytokine induced killer cell infusions in such patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 381 infusions (from 67 advanced cases recruited) were included in this study. All patients underwent peripheral blood mononuclear cell apheresis for the following cellular therapy and dendritic cells-cytokine induced killer cells were expanded in vitro. Peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets were quantified through flow cytometry to address the cellular immunity status. Clinical efficacy and physical activities were evaluated by RECIST criteria and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scores respectively. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between cellular infusions and clinical benefits. Results: An average of $5.7{\pm}2.94{\times}10^9$ induced cells were infused each time and patients were exposed to 6 infusions. Cellular immunity was improved in that cytotoxic $CD8^+CD28^+$ T lymphocytes were increased by 74% and suppressive $CD8^+CD28^-$ T lymphocytes were elevated by 16% (p<0.05). Continuous infusion of dendritic cells-cytokine induced killer cells was associated with improvement of both patient status and cellular immunity. A median of six infusions were capable of reducing risk of progression by 70% (95%CI 0.10-0.91). Every elevation of one ECOG score corresponded to a 3.90-fold higher progression risk (p<0.05) and 1% increase of $CD8^+CD28^-$ T cell proportion reflecting a 5% higher risk of progression (p<0.05). Conclusions: In advanced cancer patients, continuous dendritic cell-cytokine induced killer cell infusions are capable of recovering cellular immunity, improving patient status and quality of life in those who are unresponsive to conventional cancer treatment.

반도체 공정 과정에서 설비의 효율의 높이고 생산성 향상을 도모하며 라인의 품질 사고 방지를 위하여 공정 진행 과정을 실시간으로 모니터링하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 이 연구에서는 반도체 공정의 전반적인 작업현황을 실시간으로 파악하고 비정상적인 상황이 발생하는 경우 즉각적으로 대응하기 위해 생산현장의 임베디드 PC들과 통신하여 공정 처리 데이터를 저장하고 이상 발생과 이력 정보 등을 제공하는 웹기반 모니터링시스템을 설계하고 구현하고자 한다. 이 논문의 궁극적인 목표는 작업라인의 현황을 실시간으로 파악하는 온라인 시스템을 구축하여 인력의 고도화를 도모하고 기업의 생산성 증대와 제품의 품질 향상에 기여하는 것이다.
GM Foods에 대한 과학전문 기자, 일반 기자, 소비자의 인식 및 태도에 관한 연구

식품은 소비자의 일상생활에 있어 필수적인 재화이면서 건강과 직결되는 제품이기 때문에 소비자들은 식품안전문제에 매우 민감할 수밖에 없다. 최근 국내에 유전자 재조합 기술을 활용한 옥수수와 콩 등이 수입되며 GM Foods(Genetically Modified Foods)의 비중이 높아지고 있어 이에 대한 찬반 논의가 활발하게 일어나고 있다.GM Foods에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 이에 대한 연구도 지속적으로 진행되어 왔으나, 기존의 GM Foods에 대한 연구는 대부분이 소비자에 대한 것이며, 일부 소비자와 생산 자의 인식과 태도를 비교한 연구가 있으나 기자와 소비자의 인식과 태도를 비교한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 본 연구의 목적은 GM Foods에 대한 과학전문 기자, 일반 기자, 소비자의 인식과 태도를 계량적으로 파악하고 그것을 더 심층적으로 분석 하는 것으로 분석 자료를 얻기 위해 정량조사(설문조사)와 정성조사(FGI)를 병행하였 다. 이 논문은 세 집단의 유전자 재조합 식품에 대한 인식의 차이를 비교해 봄으로써, 향후 유전자 재조합 식품의 시장성과 상업화에 있어서 정부가 효과적으로 소통을 하기 위해 필요한 차별화 된 소통의 전략을 제시하는데 의미가 있다고 하겠다. Consumers’ interest and concerns for food safety is heightened with development of biotechnology and genetical engineering of food products since the health effects of such technology has a direct implication on consumers’ life. Recently, GM foods such as GM corns and GM barley are increasingly consumed in the domestic market and considerable attention has been drawn to this issue. Several studies focused on the attitude of consumers and some assessed comparative difference between consumers and producers toward GM foods. However, studies on different attitude among various stakeholders such as journalists and consumers are limited. the purpose of this study is to evaluate attitudinal difference among stakeholders both qualitatively and quantitatively. Survey study and Focus Group Interview were used to provide empirical evidence and findings may enable effective development of differentiated risk communication strategies for different stakeholders by policymakers and marketers.
쇠미역사촌과 미역 포자체의 배양 및 야외 개체군의 생장 비교

The effects of temperature, light, and salinity on the growth of Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida juveniles were examined in laboratory cultures. In a cultivation farm, the monthly yield and density were also investigated between December and April for C. costata and between December and March in 2007 and 2008 for U. pinnatifida. The relative growth rates (RGRs) were greater at 20~60 μmol photons m-2s-1 than at low (0~10 μmol photons m-2s-1) and high (100~180 μmol photons m-2s-l) irradiance levels. The optimal growth conditions for the two species were 17℃, 35 psu, 60 μmol photons m-2s-1, and a daylength of 12 h, indicating that C. costata and U. pinnatifida have very similar growth responses to temperature, light, and salinity. However, the growth responses of the two species to various environmental factors were different; C. costata grew faster than U. pinnatifida but the latter species grew well at low salinity. The monthly yield of C. costata and U. pinnatifida increased steadily over the study period, and it was maximal in March for both species, but the yield of U. pinnatifida was greater than that of C. costata.
