        Antioxidant Opuntia ficus-indica Extract Activates AHR-NRF2 Signaling and Upregulates Filaggrin and Loricrin Expression in Human Keratinocytes

        Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) is a cactus species widely used as an anti-inflammatory, antilipidemic, and hypoglycemic agent. It has been shown that OFI extract (OFIE) inhibits oxidative stress in animal models of diabetes and hepatic disease; however, its antioxidant mechanism remains largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that OFIE exhibited potent antioxidant activity through the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and the downstream antioxidant enzyme NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), which inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species in keratinocytes challenged with tumor necrosis factor α or benzo[α]pyrene. The antioxidant capacity of OFIE was canceled in NRF2 knockdown keratinocytes. OFIE exerted this NRF2-NQO1 upregulation through activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). Moreover, the ligation of AHR by OFIE upregulated the expression of epidermal barrier proteins: filaggrin and loricrin. OFIE also prevented TH2 cytokine-mediated downregulation of filaggrin and loricrin expression in an AHRdependent manner because it was canceled in AHR knockdown keratinocytes. Antioxidant OFIE is a potent activator of AHRNRF2-NQO1 signaling and may be beneficial in treating barrier-disrupted skin disorders.

      • Irradiation-resistant Properties of Structurally Controlled Molybdenum Alloys Through a Multi-step Internal Nitriding

        In order to overcome the recrystallization embrittlement and irradiation embrittlement of Mo, which are major problems for its fusion applications, internally nitrided Mo alloys were prepared by a novel multi-step internal nitriding. Neutron irradiation was performed in the Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR). After irradiation, nitrided Mo alloys exhibited ower ductile-brittle transition temperature than irradiated TZM. These results suggested that multi-step internal nitriding was effective to the improvement in the embrittlement by irradiation. Transmission electron microscope observation revealed that TiN particles precipitated by nitriding acted as a sink for irradiation-induced defects.

      • Effect of C/Ti Atomic Ratio of TiCx Raw Powder on the Properties of Ti-Mo-W-TiC Sintered Hard Alloy

        We have studied the effect of C/Ti atomic ratio of TiCx (x=0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) raw powder on the properties of the Ti-Mo-WTiC sintered hard alloy. The decrease of C/Ti atomic ratio accelerated the densification in the sintering process. The hardness was remarkably improved up to 1350HV with decreasing the C/Ti atomic ratio because of increase of TiCx phase volume content and its fine dispersion. From the results of electro-chemical tests in acid and 3% NaCl solutions, it was obvious that every alloy had excellent corrosion resistance, which meant about 200 times better than that of WC-Co cemented carbide.

        防衛協会·自衛隊協力会に関する一研究 ―1960年代の全国的設立を中心に―

        戦後の日本社会では、自衛隊に対する否定的な認識が広く共有されてきたと言われることが多い。とはいえその事は、当時において自衛隊に肯定的な認識を持った人々が存在しなかった事を意味しない。例えば、内閣府による世論調査は、少なくとも1960年代から2020年現在まで一貫して、自衛隊に対して肯定的な認識を持つ国民のほうが多かったことを示している。 同様に、自衛隊を支援する動きも存在した。その代表例が1960年代に全国各地で相次いで設立された、民間の自衛隊支援団体である防衛協会·自衛隊協力会である。それでは彼らはなぜこの時期、この様な自衛隊支援活動に取り組んでいたのだろうか。この様な疑問に基づき、本研究では、防衛協会·自衛隊協力会に着目し、それがどのような団体で、なぜ1960年代に全国で相次いで設立されたのかを社会的背景を含めて明らかにした。 まず、防衛協会·自衛隊協力会は、自衛隊支援と防衛思想の普及を主な目的とする民間の任意団体であった。1960年頃から駐屯地周辺の地域で設立が始まり、1960年代後半にはすでに全国で1,000以上の協会数と約60万人の会員数を擁する団体となっていた。また、1964年に設立された大阪防衛協会では松下電器産業(現パナソニック)の創業者で「経営の神様」と称される松下幸之助が初代会長を務め、1966年に設立された東京都自衛隊協力会連合会では日経連代表幹事の桜田武が初代会長を務めるなど、各地の有力な財界人が中心となって設立されたこともわかった。 こうした、防衛協会·自衛隊協力会設立の背景には、1950年代後半に高まる「非武装中立論」や「税金泥棒」批判といった「反自衛隊的風潮」に加えて、1960年代に高度経済成長下で広まった国民の生活態度、すなわち自衛隊·防衛問題への「無責任」「無関心」「無理解」などがある。そうした社会的風潮に対する懸念に加えて、1960年前後に起きた「伊勢湾台風」や「昭和38年1月豪雪」などの自然災害に派遣される自衛隊を支援しようと各地の財界人が声を上げた結果、防衛協会·自衛隊協力会が全国各地で設立されたのであった。 It is assumed that the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), was negatively recognized in postwar Japan. However, public opinion surveys have clearly shown that the perception of the JSDF has been consistently positive ever since the 1960’s; it was in this decade that overwhelming support for the JSDF could be seen easily from the very fact that the Defense Associations/Self-Defense Forces Cooperation Associations (DA’s/SDFCA’s) were established in 38 of Japan’s prefectures. Consequently, this paper firstly introduces what the DA’s/SDFCA’s are and then, secondly, examines the reason why they were established all over Japan in the 1960’s. As a result of the research, the following became clear: First, the DA’s/SDFCA’s were private voluntary organizations which mainly aimed to support the JSDF and to raise public awareness on the defense issues. After foundation in various places around the 1960’s, the DA’s/SDFCA’s had already reached more than 1,000 associations and about 600,000 members nationwide in the latter half of the decade. In addition, it was also found that they were established by the people from the business world such as Konosuke Matsushita, the Panasonic founder typically referred to as “the god of management” in the Osaka Defense Association that was established in 1964. In the establishing of the DA’s/SDFCA’s, there are some backgrounds. First, the “anti-JSDF trend” represented the ideas of “unarmed neutrality” and “tax thief” theories that began to increase in the latter half of the 1950’s. Second, there was an increase in people who felt “indifference” to the JSDF and defense issues amid the high economic growth in the 1960’s. Additionally, under these circumstances, some natural disasters were also occurring triggering the national mood further still. Consequently, and to assist the JSDF who had been dispatched for a disaster relief mission during the “Isewan Typhoon” and “the disastrous snowstorm of 1963”, the DA’s/SDFCA’s were established all over Japan.

        Skilled Migration in Asia: Focusing on Taiwan

        Brain circulation contributed greatly to Taiwan in the 1980s and 1990s because the returnees brought back not only technology but also the business styles and knowledge from the developed countries. In the 21st century, however, there is little expectation of brain circulation and Taiwan is experiencing a shortage of highly skilled human resources. To address this issue, the Taiwanese government has been proactively recruiting workers internationally over the Internet or by dispatching recruiting missions to acquire advanced technologies and fill the shortage of highly skilled human resources. However, Taiwanese workers are leaving Taiwan because a number of Chinese companies or universities are offering high monetary compensation to recruit Taiwanese workers. This trend is also observed in companies from other countries, such as Japan or Singapore, who also seek Taiwanese workers. The movement of skilled workers to and from Taiwan in the 21st century seems to differ slightly from the pre-1980s brain drain and the brain circulation of the 1980s–1990s. The Taiwanese government and companies should make efforts to avoid brain drain.

        Partnership marketing for prevention

        There is no place in the world that has never suffered a disaster. We cannot escape fromdisaster in our daily life because we exist in a global setting. Disaster can happen to anindividual or an organization on any day and anywhere, at any time. Thus, what we do isconsider not how to escape disaster, but how to make an effort to overcome it. We usually consider how to reduce the losses caused by damage, how to reducethe degree of damage, and/or how to increase the speed of recovery after a disaster. Thisarticle will not discuss the constitution, the factors, or the causes of disaster. It willdiscuss the efficiency and effectiveness of avoiding disaster and recovering fromdisasters as quickly as possible through cases close to us in daily life in the view ofpartnership marketing. And we will argue the possibility and importance of preventingthe occurrence of disaster finally. We believe the best way to overcome disasters is tocreate a multidimensional partnership network with strategic planning to fundamentallyprevent the occurrence of disaster.

        Drastic Therapy for Listerial Brain Abscess Involving Combined Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Antimicrobial Agents

        Background Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a rare causative pathogen ofbrain abscess that is often found in immunocompromised patients. Although patients with supratentorial listerial abscesses showed a longer survival with surgical drainage, the standardtherapy for patients with subtentorial lesions has not been established. Case Report We report herein a patient with supra- and subtentorial brain abscesses causedby L. monocytogenes infection. These abscesses did not respond to antibiotics, and his symptoms gradually worsened. Drainage was not indicated for subtentorial lesions, and the patientwas additionally treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which dramatically reduced the volume of abscesses and improved the symptoms. Conclusions This is the first report of drastic therapy for a patient with listerial brain abscesses involving combined antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The findings suggestthat hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a good option for treating patients with deep-seated listerialabscesses and for who surgical drainage is not indicated.
