      • 3D hierarchical CoO@MnO2 core-shell nanohybrid for high-energy solid state asymmetric supercapacitors

        <P>A unique morphology, high specific surface area, extraordinary porosity, and excellent conductive networks are typical favorable properties of pseudocapacitors; however, fully comprehending and interpreting this substantive topic still remains a great challenge. Herein, we present a new strategy for the direct growth of a cobalt monoxide@manganese oxide core-shell nanostructure on 3D Ni foam (CoO@MnO2/Ni foam). This is accomplished by simple, scalable, in situ fabrication methods to produce a material that can be employed as an advanced electrode material for high-energy solid state asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). The cost-effective, binder-free 3D CoO@MnO2 core-shell nanostructure delivers excellent electrochemical properties with an ultra-high specific capacitance (1835 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1)), tremendous rate capabilities with an extraordinary capacitance of 1198 F g(-1) at a current density of 20 A g(-1), and outstanding stability (97.7% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles). ASCs with a maximum potential window of 1.8 V are fabricated by using a 3D CoO@MnO2 core-shell nanohybrid as the positive electrode and N-doped graphene (NG) as the negative electrode in order to validate the outstanding performance for practical energy storage devices. Impressively, the ASCs delivered a high specific capacitance (191 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)), excellent energy density (similar to 85.9 W h kg(-1)), an ultra-high power density (similar to 16 769 W kg(-1) at 51.7 W h kg(-1)), and remarkable cycle stability (86.8% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles). These findings provide a new method to design 3D CoO@MnO2 core-shell nanostructures that are cost-effective and binder-free electrode materials for the development of high-performance energy storage devices.</P>

        For the research of the effects on suspension solution with YBcO and BSCCO for elcectrophoretic deposition to prepare superconducting thick film wire, the preheating technique for the superconducting powders in vaccum system was used with various solvent solutions for electrophoresis such as acetone, toluen and buthanol was investigated. As a result, it was useful to remove the influence of remaining and adsorbed solvent solution which was existed between and on the particle surfaces when the specimens of superconducting wire by electrophoresis were treated in vacuum of 10-3 Torr and temperature around 200℃ in bell-jar system. Of the prepared superconducting wire samples, the critical current density, Jc was measured by 4-point prove method in liquid N₂, and at the value of 10³to 10⁴A/㎠, respectively, for the YBCO and BSCCO superconducting wires.

        Synthesis and evaluation of a novel chiral derivatization reagent for resolution of carboxylic acid enantiomers by RP-HPLC

        <P>A novel derivatization reagent, N-[1-Oxo-5-(triphenylphosphonium)pentyl]-(S)-3-aminopyrrolidine (OTPA), with triphenylphosphine (TPP) as a basic structure carrying a permanent positive charge was developed for the enantiomeric separation of chiral carboxylic acids by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). OTPA reacted with the carboxylic acids at 40 degrees C within 90 min in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt). The degree of epimerization (racemization) during the derivatization reaction was negligible. The separability of the diastereomers was evaluated in terms of their resolution value (Rs). The Rs values of the derivatives of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which were selected as the representative carboxylic acids, were completely separated by reversed-phase chromatography using an ODS (4.6 mm x 150 mm I.D., 5.0 mu m) column. The resolution Rs values were 1.54-2.23 for the evaluated carboxylic acids and the OTPA-derivatization was also effective for the enantiomeric separation of chiral carboxylic acids. The calibration curves (r(2) > 0.9971) were linear over the concentration range of 0.0125-1.25 mM for each enantiomer of ketoprofen (KET), and naproxen (NAP), 0.05-1.0 mM for each enantiomer of ibuprofen (IBU), 2-phenylpropionic acid (PPA), and loxoprofen (LOX), and 0.05-1.25 mM for each enantiomer of PBA. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) for each of the enantiomers of the NSAIDs and chiral carboxylic acid enantiomers was 1.4-7.6 mu mol/L. The inter-day and intra-day assay precisions were all <6.77% and the mean recoveries (%) of the NSAIDs and chiral carboxylic acids from the spiked human plasma were 95.27-101.12%.       • Spectroelectrochemical studies of hole percolation on functionalised nanocrystalline TiO<sub>2</sub> films: a comparison of two different ruthenium complexes

        <P>We report the application of spectroelectrochemical techniques to compare the hole percolation dynamics of molecular networks of two ruthenium bipyridyl complexes adsorbed onto mesoporous, nanocrystalline TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films. The percolation dynamics of the ruthenium complex <I>cis</I>-di(thiocyanato)(2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-tridecyl) ruthenium(<SMALL>II</SMALL>), N621, is compared with those observed for an analogous dye with an additional tri-phenyl amine (TPA) donor moiety, <I>cis</I>-di(thiocyanato)(2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-bis(vinyltriphenylamine)) ruthenium(<SMALL>II</SMALL>), HW456. The <I>in situ</I>oxidation of these ruthenium complexes adsorbed to the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films is monitored by cyclic voltammetry and voltabsorptometry, whilst the dynamics of hole (cation) percolation between adsorbed ruthenium complexes is monitored by potentiometric spectroelectrochemistry and chronoabsorptometry. The hole diffusion coefficient, <I>D</I><SUB>eff</SUB>, is shown to be dependent on the dye loading on the nanocrystalline TiO<SUB>2</SUB> film, with a threshold observed at ∼60% monolayer surface coverage for both dyes. The hole diffusion coefficient of HW456 is estimated to be 2.6 × 10<SUP>−8</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP>/s, 20-fold higher than that obtained for the control N621, attributed to stronger electronic coupling between the TPA moieties of HW456 accelerating the hole percolation dynamics. The presence of mercuric ions, previously shown to bind to the thiocyanates of analogous ruthenium complexes, resulted in a quenching of the hole percolation for N621/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films and an enhancement for HW456/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films. These results strongly suggest that the hole percolation pathway is along the overlapped neighbouring -NCS groups for the N621 molecules, whereas in HW456 molecules cation percolation proceeds between intermolecular TPA ligands.         Frequent Mutations of p53 and MTS1/CDK4I Tumor Suppressor Genes in Chinese Preneoplastic and Neoplastic Oral Tissues

        Aberrant expression and mutation in the p53 and MTS1/CDK41 genes were determined from 11 normal, 8 preneoplastic and 25 neoplastic oral tissues obtained from Beijing, China, using immunostaining, single strand conformational polymorphism analysis, and nucleotide sequencing. Normal tissue showed a negligible amount of p53 immunostaining, while 3 (38%) of 8 preneoplastic, and 16 (64%) of 25 cancer tissues demonstrated moderate to strong p53 immunostaining. Point mutations within exons 5 to 8 were not detected in normal tissue specimens, but were detected in 2 (25%) preneoplastic tissues and in 15 (60%) cancer specimens. OF the tissues with mutations, 2 (100%) preneoplatic and 14 (93%) cancer tissues contained a CGT to CAT mutation at codon 273 of p53 gene. One cancer tissue showed a silent mutation (CGC to CTC) at codon 283. Three cancer specimens containing a point mutation at codon 273 also showed additional silent mutations at codons 156, 157, or 275. These data indicate that p53 mutation is highly prevalent in tested preneoplastic and neoplastic oral tissues and that the codon 273 is the "hot-spot" for point mutations. The enhanced p53 immunostaining was, in general, closely associated with point mutations, but 1 (13%) preneoplastic sample and 5 (20%) neoplastic oral tissues not containing point mutations within exons 5 to 8 demonstrated enhanced immunostaining. Over 62% of preneoplastic and 80% of neoplastic oral tissues contained mutations in MTS1/CDK4I gene, but, unlike p53 mutations, the mutation pattern of MTS1/CDK4I gene was not specific. Two preneoplastic (25%) and 12 neoplastic (48%) tissues contained mutations in both p53 and MTS1/CDK4I genes, and 2 preneoplastic (25%) and 3 neoplastic (12%) tissues contained mutations neither in p53 nor in MTS1/CDK4I genes.

        Individualized Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis According to Nasal Cytology

        Purpose: Nasal cytology is important in the diagnosis and treatment of nasal inflammatory diseases. Treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) according to nasal cytology has not been fully studied. We plan to explore the individualized treatment of AR according to nasal cytology. Methods: Nasal cytology from 468 AR patients was examined for inflammatory cell quantity (grade 0-5) and the percentage of neutrophils and eosinophils. Results were subdivided into the following categories: AR(Eos), eosinophil ≥50% of the whole inflammatory cells; AR(Neu), neutrophils ≥90%; AR(Eos/Neu), 10%≤ eosinophil <50%; AR(Low), grade 0/1 inflammatory cell quantity. Nasal cytology-guided treatment was implemented: all AR(Eos) patients (n=22) and half of the AR(Neu) patients (AR[Neu1], n=22) were treated with mometasone furoate spray and oral loratadine. Another half of the AR(Neu) patients (AR[Neu2], n=22) were treated with oral clarithromycin. Visual analog scale (VAS), symptom scores, and nasal cytology were evaluated 2 weeks before and after treatment. Results: There were 224/468 (47.86%) AR(Eos), 67/468 (14.32%) AR(Neu), 112/468 (23.93%) AR(Eos/Neu), and 65/468 (13.89%) AR(Low) of the AR patients studied. There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics among these subgroups, except that the nasal blockage score was higher in AR(Eos) patients than in AR(Neu) patients (1.99 vs 1.50, P=0.02). Comparing AR(Eos) patients with AR(Neu1) patients 2 weeks after treatment, nasal symptoms and VAS were significantly lower in AR(Eos) patients, except for nasal blockage symptoms (P<0.05 of nasal itching and sneezing; P<0.01 for nasal secretion, total scores, and VAS). Comparing AR(Neu1) with AR(Neu2) patients, nasal symptoms, and VAS were significantly lower in AR(Neu2), except for nasal blockage and nasal itching symptoms (P<0.05 for nasal secretions, sneezing, total score, and VAS). Conclusions: Nasal cytology may have important value in subtyping AR and optimizing AR treatment. Treating neutrophils is very important in AR patients with locally predominant neutrophils.

      • Impact of low dose atorvastatin on development of new-onset diabetes mellitus in Asian population: Three-year clinical outcomes

        Background: High dose atorvastatin is known to be associated with new onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) in patients with high risk for developing diabetes mellitus (DM). However, low dose atorvastatin is more commonly used as compared with high dose atorvastatin. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of low dose atorvastatin (LDA, 10mg or 20mg) on the development of NODM up to three years in Asian patients. Methods: From January 2004 to September 2009, we investigated a total of 3566 patients who did not have DM. To adjust for potential confounders, a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed using the logistic regression model. After PSM (C-statistics: 0.851), a total of 818 patients (LDA group, n=409 patients and control group, n=409 patients) were enrolled for analysis. Results: Before PSM, the cumulative incidence of NODM (5.8% vs. 2.1%, p<0.001), myocardial infarction (0.5% vs. 0.1%, p-value=0.007), and major adverse cardio-cerebral event (MACCE, 1.8% vs. 0.7%, p-value=0.012) at three-years were higher in the LAD group. However, after PSM, there was a trend toward higher incidence of NODM (5.9% vs. 3.2%, p=0.064) in the LDA group, but the incidence of MACCE (1.2% vs. 1.5%, p-value=1.000) was similar between the two groups. In multivariable analysis, the LDA administration was tended to be an independent predictor of NODM (OR: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.00-3.98, p-value 0.050). Conclusions: In this study, the use of LDA tended to be a risk factor for NODM in Asian patients and reduced clinical events similar to the control group. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials will be needed to get the final conclusion.

      • Alzheimer's disease - synergistic effects of glucose deficit, oxidative stress and advanced glycation endproducts

        Many approaches have been undertaken to understand Alzheimer's disease(AD) but the heterogeneity of the etiologic factors makes it difficult to define the clincally most important factor determining the onset and progression of the disease. However, there is increasing evidence that the previously so-called "secondary factors" such as a disturbed glucose metabolism, oxidative stress and formation of "advanced glycation endproducts" (AGEs) and their interaction in a vicious cycle are also important for the onset and progression of AD. AGEs are protein codifications that contribute to the formation of the histopathological and biochemical hallmarks of AD: amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and activated microglia. Oxidative modifications are formed by a complex cascade of dehydration, oxidation and cyclisation reactions, subsequent to a non-enzymatic reaction of sugars with amino groups of proteins. Accumulation of AGE-crosslinked proteins throughout life is a general phenomenon of ageing. However, AGEs are more that just markers of ageing since they can also exert adverse biologic effects on tissues and cells, including the activation of intracellular signal transduction pathways, leading to the upregulation of cytokine and free radical production (oxidative stress). Oxidative stress is involved in various divergent events leading to cell damage, including an increase in membrane rigidity, DNA strand breaks and an impairment in glucose uptake. In addition, other age-related metabolic changes such as depletion of antioxidants or decreased energy production by a disturbed glucose metabolism diminish the ability of the cell to cope with the effects of radical-induced membrane, protein and DNA damage. With our improving understanding of the molecular basis for the clinical symptoms of dementia, it is hoped that the elucidation of the etiologic causes, particularly the positive feedback loops involving radical damage and a reduced glucose metabolism, will help to develop novel "neuroprotective" treatment strategies able to interrupt this vicious cycle of oxidative stress and energy shortage in AD.

        유형별 완전혼합사료 급여가 반추위내의 발효성상 및 영양소 소화율에 미치는 영향

        This study was conducted to examine effects of feeding dry TMR(DTMR), wet TMR(WTMR) and fermented TMR(FTMR) on rumen fermentation, enzyme activity and digestibility in the total tract of sheep. Three rumen cannulated sheep were used in a 3 × 3 latin square design. The present results showed that ?, NH_(3)-N, total and individual VFA, A/P ratio and enzymes (CMCase, Xylanase and Protease) activity in the rumen were higher in WTMR and FTMR compared with DTMR. In addition, dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, NDF and ADF digestibility in the total tract were also higher in WTMR and FTMR compared with DTMR. Therefore, the present results showed that WTMR and FTMr are better than DTMR for rumen fermentation and nutrients digestibility.

        High-Tc superconductor films of YBa2Cu3O7-x were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from alcohol-based suspension, It is very important to select suspension solution for forming electrophoretic deposited YBCO thick film, because it is heavily affected to its superconducting properties. For the formation of YBCO dense and adherent coating on a silver wire by EPD, 1% PEG(1000) 2㎖, as a additive for making their surface crack-free, was used for electrophoresis. In this paper, high-temperature superconductor films of YBa2Cu3O7-x were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from alcohol-based suspension such as iso-propanol, iso-butanol, and their mixture. As a results, the cracks were considerably decreased and the superconducting critical current density (Jc) without/with PEG was 1200 A/㎠ and 2020 A/㎠, which films deposited in 30% iso-PrOH and 70 % iso-BuOH suspensionin mix iso-propanol and iso-butanol suspension.
