The purpose of this study was to investigate the sex consciousness, sex problems and sex education of adolescence emphasizing the validity and necessity for the systematic enforcement of sex education. For this purpose, a questionnaire representing six categories, the relationship, with the opposite sex, sexual knowledge, sex consciousness, sex morality, sex problems, and sex education, was developed by the researchers. The subjects of this study was 224 middle school students and 267high school students in Seoul. Sex ration of these subjects was about the same; For the satistical analysis of the collected data, frequency, Chi-square, and severed one way ANOVA's and two way ANOVA's were performed .05 was used as a significance level in this study. The most important findings in the study showed that that most of the students wanted the systematic sex education in school, especially by the professionals in the sex education field.

The trans-differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is employed, but there is little understanding of the cell source-dependent trans-differentiation potential of MSCs into corneal epithelial cells. In the present study, we induced trans-differentiation of MSCs derived from umbilical cord matrix (UCM-MSCs) and from dental tissue (D-MSCs), and we comparatively evaluated the in vitro trans-differentiation properties of both MSCs into corneal epithelial-like cells. Specific cell surface markers of MSC (CD44, CD73, CD90, and CD105) were detected in both UCM-MSCs and D-MSCs, but MHCII and CD119 were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in UCM-MSCs than in D-MSCs. In UCM-MSCs, not only expression levels of Oct3/4 and Nanog but also proliferation ability were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in D-MSCs. In vitro differentiation abilities into adipocytes and osteocytes were confirmed for both MSCs. UCM-MSCs and D-MSCs were successfully trans-differentiated into corneal epithelial cells, and expression of lineage-specific markers (Cytokeratin-3, -8, and -12) were confirmed in both MSCs using immunofluorescence staining and qRT-PCR analysis. In particular, the differentiation capacity of UCM-MSCs into corneal epithelial cells was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of D-MSCs. In conclusion, UCM-MSCs have higher differentiation potential into corneal epithelial-like cells and have lower expression of CD119 and MHC class II than D-MSCs, which makes them a better source for the treatment of corneal opacity.
Present Situations on the Development and Utilization of Artificial Reefs in Korea

We discussed current situations in relation to developments and utilizations of artificial reefs (ARs) in Korea. ARs have been introduced since the first project officially started in 1971. Afterwards, comprehensive projects have been implemented to boost the fishing industry, such as a seedling release of fish, constructions of marine ranch and sea forests by using technologies of the design and deployment of ARs from 1998 to 2015. It proved that catch of fish fairly increased, and accordingly fishermen’s earnings were also improved, compared to the past when those projects were not executed yet. In addition, local governments and communities are closely collaborating to rehabilitate the fishing industry by means of improving marine environments, complementary plantings of algae, organizing a self-ruled fishing community, and a post management of marine ranch. In recent years, however, the fishing industry is challenging due to climate change, rise of sea level, and coastal pollutions almost all around the world. Therefore, we will have to share our knowledge of ARs and collaborate in order to overcome the current crisis of fishing industry.

<P>The biological properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are influenced by donor age, gender and/or tissue sources. The present study investigated the cellular and molecular properties of porcine mesenchymal stromal/stem cells <B>(</B>MSCs) isolated from different tissues (adipose & dermal skin) and sex at different ages (1 week & 8 months after birth) with similar genetic and environmental backgrounds. MSCs were analyzed for alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, CD90 and Oct3/4 expression, <I>in vitro</I> differentiation ability, senescence-associated <I>β</I>-galactosidase (SA-<I>β</I>-Gal) activity, telomeric properties, cell cycle status and expression of senescence (IL6, c-myc, TGFβ, p53 and p21)- and apoptosis (Bak and Bcl2)-related proteins. An age-dependent decline in AP activity and adipogenesis was observed in all MSCs, except for male A-MSCs. CD90 expression did not change, but SA<I>-β</I>-Gal activity increased with advancement in age, except in A-MSCs. Telomeric properties were similar in all MSCs, whereas expression levels of Oct3/4 protein declined with the advancement in age. p21 expression was increased with increase in donor age. Male derived cells have shown higher IL6 expression. The expression of p53 was slightly lower in MSCs of dermal tissue than in adipose tissue. Bak was expressed in all MSCs regardless of age, but up regulation of Bcl2 was observed in DS-MSCs derived at 1 week after birth. In conclusion, adipose tissue-derived MSCs from young female individuals were found to be more resistant to senescence under <I>in vitro</I> culture conditions.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Purpose</B></P> <P>The aim of our study was to investigate the clinicopathologic values of the expression of CD44, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)2, and MMP9 in renal cell carcinoma (RCC).</P> <P><B>Patients and methods</B></P> <P>A total of 107 clear cell RCCs (ccRCCs) and 32 nonclear cell RCCs (non-ccRCCs) were examined for CD44, MMP2, and MMP9 expression by immunohistochemistry. The membrane and cytoplasmic expression levels of the 3 proteins were scored by semiquantitative methods, and the correlations of the 3 proteins with clinicopathological parameters were verified.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>The expression levels of CD44, MMP2, and MMP9 were positively correlated with nuclear grade (grade 1–2 vs. grade 3-4) (<I>P</I> = 0.003, <I>P</I> < 0.001 and <I>P</I> < 0.001, respectively) in the ccRCCs, while in the non-ccRCCs, only CD44 expression was correlated with higher nuclear grade (grade 1–3 vs. grade 4) (<I>P</I> = 0.001). Furthermore, CD44 expression in ccRCCs and non-ccRCCs was correlated with shorter overall survival in the univariate analyses (<I>P</I> < 0.001 and <I>P</I> = 0.015, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, which accounted for age, sex, nuclear grade, and pathologic stage, CD44 expression was an independent predictor of shorter overall survival only in ccRCCs. Correlations among the 3 proteins were all positive in ccRCCs, but in non-ccRCCs, only MMP2 and MMP9 were positively correlated.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>CD44 expression may play an important role in the progression of both ccRCC and non-ccRCC. CD44 expression in ccRCC may be associated with elevated MMP2 and MMP9 expression levels, which is in contrast to non-ccRCC. The different correlations between CD44, MMP2, and MMP9 in ccRCC and non-ccRCC can be useful in understanding the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and stratifying patients for therapeutic purposes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> CD44, MMP2 and MMP9 were positively correlated with nuclear grade in ccRCCs. </LI> <LI> CD44 expression was correlated with shorter overall survival in ccRCC patients. </LI> <LI> All CD44, MMP2, and MMP9 expression levels were positively correlated in ccRCC. </LI> <LI> CD44 is not associated with MMP2 or MMP9 in non-ccRCC. </LI> </UL> </P>

We conducted modeling experiments to evaluate the residence times and exchange rates of seawater in Gamak Bay, located on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The results revealed that pollutants are more quickly dispersed in a fixed grid rather than in a variable grid system. Pollutant concentrations decayed exponentially with time after release near the mouth of the bay, whereas no exponential variations were seen at the northwest end of the bay. The mean exchange rate of the seawater was 1.58% per day in the variable grid system, and the residence time of pollutants was greater than 288 days in Gamak Bay. Conversely, the exchange rate of seawater in Gamak Bay, as revealed by the particle tracking method, was 65% over a 50-day simulation. The results suggest that the seawater exchange in Gamak Bay is so low that pollutants are likely to remain in the bay indefinitely.
