Mother tongue dilemmas and language politics in Korea

Contemporary Korean society has seen a rapid increase in the number of foreign migrants in recent years. However, the country is still generally described as an ethnically and culturally homogenous society due to the prevalent use of the national language, symbols, and traditions. Given the widespread availability of free Korean language courses through both site-based and online real-time video lectures, it is not surprising to hear about foreigners’ increased use of and proficiency in the Korean language. This study provides a critical review of perceptions of marriage migrants about the great importance of Korean language and how they lack awareness about their rights and duties to use their mother tongues in the course of their lives in South Korea.
Decision Factors in Organic Vegetable Farming in Selected Areas of Luzon, Philippines

Organic farming has been touted as a way to address the alarming rate of environmental degradation and changing health lifestyles of consumers the world over. This exploratory study attempted to identify the decision factors in organic vegetable farming; specifically, the motivators of vegetable farmers for engaging in and sustaining organic farms. This study also sought to determine the motivators and constraints in shifting from organic farming to conventional farming. Results showed that personal and philosophical factors and environmental factors essentially served as motivators for vegetable farmers to go into organic farming while economic and business factors figured prominently as motivators for organic vegetable farmers to sustain operations. No dominant motivating factors were noted for potential shifters to organic vegetable farming in view of numerous constraints such as the lack of awareness and information on organic farming technology, lack of financing, lack of sources of organic fertilizer, need for additional labor, land and soil-related constraints and lack of post-harvest handling facilities. Recommendations to mitigate these constraints included the provision of financial support at the start-up and implementation phases of organic farming and mentoring by established organic vegetable producers.
Strategic Sourcing Patterns of Philippine Agribusiness and Multinational Enterprises

This paper examined the strategic sourcing patterns of agribusiness and multinational enterprises in the Philippines and drew insights from an emerging market’s perspective based on ten explorative case studies. Findings confirmed the extant literature relative to multinational enterprises not actively pursuing local sourcing options presented by their host country. Mango processing and export companies in the Philippines primarily sourced locally from multiple locations based on the seasonality of raw material supply. Some firms employed intrasourcing in combination with external sourcing. A majority of the firms adopted sourcing strategies depending on export market specifications. In addition, foreign sourcing was still the predominant practice with imported supplies accounting for the bulk of the procurement operation due to low cost, high and consistent quality and volume flexibility considerations. Sourcing strategies employed by firms were more reactive rather than strategic. The results imply a lack of embeddedness of purchasing and supply management strategy in the overall corporate strategy of some Philippine agribusiness and multinational enterprises.
Multiplex Centrality Measurements Applied to Islanded Microgrids

This paper presents four centrality measurements applied to an alternating current (AC) microgrid (MG)modeled as a multiplex network. The MG secondary control is separated into a frequency and a power-sharinglayers, each one with a different adjacency matrix. A physical layer is also considered with an admittance matrixrepresenting the impedances among the inverters. Centrality measures are used to determine the importance ofnodes in separate layers, thereafter adjacency and Laplacian matrices are redefined to calculate the role of nodesin the multiplex system. First, a global adjacency matrix is calculated by the matrix sum of each adjacency matrix. Second, the adjacency matrix is calculated by a supra-Laplacian matrix. The first eigenvalue of the perturbed matrixis used to determine the diffusivity in the network using as leaders the sets obtained by the centrality measures. The role of the nodes in the system is verified in a simulated MG model of 37 nodes. Degree centrality and energyLaplacian measures present similar sets of nodes; however, the fastest set of nodes is found using the Eigenvectormeasurements for uniform and supra Laplacian approach

A balance trial experiment was carried out to evaluate the potential relationship between an enzymatically hydrolyzed yeast (EHY) and yeast culture combined with a live Bacillus subtilis (Bs) on the productive parameters, ileal digestibility, retention of nutrient and energy and villus morphology in broilers. Seventy two 28 d old, Ross B308 male broilers were assigned to a factorial combination of 2 levels of EHY (0 and 1 kg/ton of feed) and 2 levels of Bs (0 and 125 g/ton of feed). The experiment lasted 2 weeks. Several treatment interactions were observed. EHY-fed broilers showed the lowest feed intake and feed conversion ratio whereas Bs-fed broilers showed the highest feed intake and intermediate feed conversion ratio (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.05). Also, EHY-fed broilers had greater ileal digestibility of dry matter (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.01) and energy (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.05) but these responses were counterbalanced by the combination of EHY and Bs. The thickness of the mucosa was similar between the control and EHY-fed broilers, but was lowest when Bs was added alone (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.01). The thickness of the villus was greater in EHY plus Bs-fed broilers, intermediate for the control and lower for Bs or EHY-fed broilers (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.05). The area of the villus was greater in the control and EHY plus Bs-fed broilers (EHY and BS interaction, p<0.05). In addition, EHY-fed broilers showed greater breast yield and nitrogen retention (p<0.01) and ashes digestibility (p<0.05). On the other hand, Bs-fed broilers had greater carcass and breast weight, nitrogen retention, energy excretion and villus height (p<0.05). In summary, EHY and Bs enhanced some growth, carcass and nutrient retention responses, but did not show any synergic relationship in these responses. Opposite to this, the results suggest that the positive effect of EHY on the feed conversion and digestibility of nutrients were counterbalanced by the addition of Bs.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of the time from initial presentation to total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in patients with primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis (OA) and rotator cuff (RTC) arthropathy who were conservatively managed with corticosteroid injections. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent TSA from 2010 to 2021. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate median time to TSA for primary OA and RTC arthropathy patients. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify significant predictors of time to TSA and to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: The cohort included 160 patients with primary OA and 92 with RTC arthropathy. In the primary OA group, median time to TSA was 15 months. Significant predictors of shorter time to TSA were older age at presentation (HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00–1.04; P=0.03) and presence of moderate or severe acromioclavicular joint arthritis (HR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.05–2.01; P=0.03). In the RTC arthropathy group, median time to TSA was 14 months, and increased number of corticosteroid injections was associated with longer time to TSA (HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.80–0.95; P=0.003). Conclusions: There are distinct prognostic factors for progression to TSA between primary OA patients and RTC arthropathy patients managed with corticosteroid injections. Multiple corticosteroid injections are associated with delayed time to TSA in RTC arthropathy patients.

IAS/PAS 41, a set of accounting standards which regulates the accounting treatment of agricultural activities, provides the accounting benchmark relative to agricultural activity and includes the transformation of biological assets to agricultural produce. In the Philippines, it was implemented in 2005, but many companies were not yet compliant then with the required accounting treatment. Given that there is a dearth of studies about IAS/PAS 41 compliance, this study was conducted to assess the accounting practices of cattle farms based on the provisions of IAS/PAS 41, including their IAS/PAS 41 compliance relative to past international studies, determine the factors that influence adoption of such accounting practices and capture cattle farmer perceptions on IAS/PAS 41. A descriptive research design was employed involving the conduct of a survey of 81 cattle farms, frequency analysis and an evaluation of compliance vis-à-vis an IAS 41 checklist. Study findings show diversity in the accounting practices of cattle farms depending on the size of operation, business organization and nature of business. Backyard farmers did not maintain records and, therefore, were not IAS/PAS 41 compliant but used the fair market value approach utilized by commercial farms in the valuation of cattle inventories.
