Natural Fiber Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin Filled with Bio-based Calcium Carbonate: Preparation and Examination

        Ahmed Mohamed Sharaf,Eslam Syala,Abbas Anwar Ezzat,Salah F. Abdellah Ali,E. El-Rafey 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.5

Both the chicken eggshell (ES) and rice husk (RH) represent environmental, and pollution issues. Incorporatingboth of them, with minimum processing procedures, in various useful applications is a major contribution in solving suchproblems. In this research, unsaturated polyester (UP) was doped with different percentages (5-25 wt.%) of fine (ES) to formone (UP-ES) composite system. The (UP-ES) system was reinforced with a fixed 10 wt.% of (RH), which represents anagricultural waste produced in tonnage, to fabricate the second system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis emerged that the(ES) is forming from calcium carbonate (CaCO3) resembling typically the mineral one. The addition of (ES) enhanced boththe mechanical characteristics of (UP) resin in terms of tensile strength, elongation %, tensile modulus, impact strength, flexural strength from 26.33 to 33.77 MPa, from 3.30 to 3.60 MPa, from 2000 to 2406.67 MPa, from 1.25 to 2.42 kJ/m², from64.93 to 75.07 MPa, and the thermal stability from 335.75 to 346.24 oC, respectively. This inclusion of (ES) also promotedboth the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and dielectric constant (εr) of (UP) from 17.25 to 23.50 % and from 6.76 to 11.02,respectively. The addition of (RH) to (ES-UP) composite, generally, gave the same attitude for the properties like what in the(ES-UP) system other than the remarkable extra-increase in the (εr). Also, (RH) elevated the water absorption (%) of (ES-UP)composite by the action of its hydrophilic nature. It is concluded that the incorporation of both (ES) and (RH) reduces thefinal cost of the composite and solves one of the great environmental disposal issues.

Plasmonic-Multichromatic Sensor for Gallic Acid Assay Utilizing Ag-Coated Au Nanobipyramids

        Mostafa Mohamed H.,Shaban Samy M.,Hafez Eslam,Shin Jihoon,김동환 한국바이오칩학회 2023 BioChip Journal Vol.17 No.4

Gallic acid (GA) is known for its valuable properties as an antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-mutagenic compound, making its detection in foods and drugs of paramount importance. In this research, we introduce a novel multichromatic sensor for GA detection, which employs the controlled growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs). The sensor exploits GA's capability to reduce AgNO 3, resulting in the growth of AgNPs and a subsequent blue shift of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as large as 195 nm. This unique multicolor response ranges from light gray to green, blue–violet, and pink, allowing for distinctive visual identifi cation of GA concentrations. The sensor's performance demonstrates a wide dynamic range of 0–175 μM, and a detection limit (LOD) as low as 0.139 μM. Notably, the applicability of this multichromic plasmonic probe was successfully tested for GA assay in both Black and Green tea, showcasing highly satisfactory recovery effi ciencies and affi rming its potential for food quality control applications. The presented multichromatic sensor off ers a promising approach for rapid and sensitive GA detection in various food and pharmaceutical products, enhancing the monitoring and assessment of GA content for improved product quality and safety.

All types of component malrotation affect the early patient-reported outcome measures after total knee arthroplasty

        ( Mohammad Kamal Abdelnasser ),( Mohamed Eslam Elsherif ),( Hatem Bakr ),( Mohamed Mahran ),( Moustafa H. M. Othman ),( Yaser Khalifa ) 대한슬관절학회 2019 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: Outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), whether clinical, radiological or survival analysis, have been well-studied. Still, there are some concerns about patient satisfaction with the outcome of the surgery and factors that might contribute to a suboptimal result. This study aims to determine if there is correlation between primary TKA malalignment and early patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Materials and methods: Sixty patients, who had primary TKA and a minimum of 2 years of follow up, were recruited for a detailed clinical and radiological examination. Knee alignment was measured in the coronal, sagittal and axial planes. Normal and the outlier measurements of the patients’ knees were defined and the clinical results (PROMs) compared to see if there was a statistically significant difference. Results: Correlation between postoperative limb malalignment in the coronal and the sagittal planes and PROMs was not significant. Conversely, there was significant negative correlation between all types of malrotation and PROMs. Conclusions: Although malalignment has been linked to inferior outcome and implant survival, our results showed that coronal and sagittal limb malalignment has no significant effect on early PROMs. However, all types of component rotational malalignment significantly worsen early PROMs.

MAFLD enhances clinical practice for liver disease in the Asia-Pacific region

        Takumi Kawaguchi,Tsubasa Tsutsumi,Dan Nakano,Mohammed Eslam,Jacob George,Takuji Torimura 대한간학회 2022 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.28 No.2

Fatty liver is now a major cause of liver disease in the Asia-Pacific region. Liver diseases in this region have distinctive characteristics. First, fatty liver is frequently observed in lean/normal-weight individuals. However, there is no standard definition of this unique phenotype. Second, fatty liver is often observed in patients with concomitant viral hepatitis. The exclusion of viral hepatitis from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease limits its value and detracts from the investigation and holistic management of coexisting fatty liver in patients with viral hepatitis. Third, fatty liver-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally categorized as non-B non-C HCC. Fourth, the population is aging rapidly, and it is imperative to develop a practicable, low-intensity exercise program for elderly patients. Fifth, most patients and nonspecialized healthcare professionals still lack an awareness of the significance of fatty liver both in terms of intrahepatic and extrahepatic disease and cancer. Recently, an international expert panel proposed a new definition of fatty liver: metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). One feature of MAFLD is that metabolic dysfunction is a prerequisite for diagnosis. Pertinent to regional issues, MAFLD also provides its diagnostic criteria in lean/normal-weight individuals. Furthermore, MAFLD is independent of any concomitant liver disease, including viral hepatitis. Therefore, MAFLD may be a more suitable definition for fatty liver in the Asia-Pacific region. In this review, we introduce the regional characteristics of fatty liver and discuss the advantages of MAFLD for improving clinical practice for liver disease in the region.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of Azo-Sulfa-Based Disperse Dyes and Their Application in Polyester Printing

        Hayam A. Abd El Salam,Mohamed S. Abdel‑Aziz,Eslam Reda El‑Sawy,Elkhabiry Shaban 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.8

For conjugating sulfa drug moieties with Schiff’s bases scaffold in the same build through an azo linker to take advantage of the bioactive feature of both motifs, we designed and synthesized a series of bioactive disperse dyes. The target disperse dyes, methyl 2-(E-2-hydroxy-5-((E)-(4-sulfa-derivative) diazenyl)benzylidene) hydrazine-1-carbodithioates 4a–e have been synthesized via the acidic reaction of azo dyes 3a–e with methyl hydrazine carbodithioate. Structures of the synthesized dyes were clarified based on their spectral and elemental analyses. The effectiveness of the dyes was initially tested as an antibacterial toward Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538-P and Escherichia coli ATCC 25933. Dyes that were proven to be effective against bacteria have been used as disperse dyes to print polyester fabrics. The color properties of the dyes and their fastness properties counting washing, perspiration, light, rubbing, and sublimation fastness were also examined. The printed polyester fabrics were evaluated for their antibacterial activity via colony-forming unit (CFU) technique. Fabric samples treated with 4c, 4d, and 4b had promising anti-Gram-positive activities against S. aureus. Whereas 4c-, 4d-, and 4b-treated fabrics exhibited moderate anti-Gram-negative activities against the test bacterium E. coli.

Anti-cancer Effect of Hyoscyamus muticus Extract via Its Activation of Fas/FasL-ASK1-p38 Pathway

        Amer Ali Abd El-Hafeez,Hala Mohamed M. Marzouk,Mohamed A. A. Abdelhamid,Hazim O. Khalifa,Tamer H. A. Hasanin,Ahmed G. K. Habib,Fatma Mahmoud Abdelwahed,Fatma M. Barakat,Eslam M. Bastawy,Eman M. B. Abd 한국생물공학회 2022 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.27 No.5

Hyoscyamus muticus L. is a traditional medicine used as antispasmodic and sedative. Herein, we aimed to determine the phytochemical constituents and for the first time its anti-cancer activities. The phytochemical constituents of the different extracts were evaluated by calorimetric methods. The anti-cancer activities of the extracts were tested against leukemia, breast, renal, and prostate cancers cell lines. 4, 6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, flow cytometric analysis, knockdown of ASK1, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were evaluated to clarify the mechanism of action. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of wide range of phytoconstituents. Hyoscyamus muticus methanolic extracts (HMME) showed the highest anti-cancer activities against leukemia, breast, renal, and prostate cancers as compared to ethanol and aqueous extracts. Specifically, HMME exerted cytotoxic effect against the MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines with IC50 values of 8.75 and 7.25 μg/mL, respectively. Mechanistically, DAPI staining and flow cytometric analysis revealed that HMME induces apoptosis via the death receptor, FAS, but not the mitochondrial pathway. Moreover, ASK1 and p38 were rapidly activated in response to HMME, and knockdown of ASK1 by a small interference of RNA specific to Ask1 attenuated p38 and caspase-3 activation and suppressed apoptosis, implying that HMME-induced apoptosis relies on the ASK1-p38-caspase-3 pathway. Furthermore, we confirmed that cellular ROS generation was a critical mediator in HMME-induced apoptosis because the ROSscavenger N-acetyl cysteine significantly decreased the phosphorylation of ASK1 and HMME-induced apoptosis. Our results confirmed HMME cytotoxic effects in TNBCs via ROS-dependent activation of the Fas/FasL-ASK1-p38 axis.

Corrosion inhibition performance and computational studies of pyridine and pyran derivatives for API X-65 steel in 6 M H2SO4

        Kurls E. Anwer,Ahmed A. Farag,Eslam A. Mohamed,Eman M. Azmy,Galal H. Sayed 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.97 No.-

The present investigation aims to synthesize and explore the influence of pyridine and pyran derivativeson the API X-65 steel corrosion in a 6 M H2SO4 solution. The compound was examined at differentconcentrations to optimized the best concentration for the corrosion inhibition effect, weight lossmeasurements, potentiodynamic polarization measurement (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and theoretical methods were used to evaluating theinhibition efficiency. The obtained adsorption data achieved the model of Langmuir isotherm. Thepyridine derivatives showed higher inhibition than pyran derivatives. The PDP tests proposed thatpyridine and pyran derivatives are mixed-type inhibitors. The EIS parameters demonstrate that thedouble-layer capacitance (Cdl) decreases with the increase of inhibitor concentration, which implies areduces dielectric constant. It was observed from experimental data that the inhibition efficiency reached92.7%, 89.1, 94.7, and 85.2% for concentration 2.66 10 3M of I, II, III and IV, respectively indicating theinhibition order is III > I > II > IV. The parameters derived from the theoretical quantum chemicalcalculations were found adequately correlated with the obtained experimental results.

Physicians' Understanding of Nutritional Factors Determining Brain Development and Cognition in the Middle East and Africa

        Yvan Vandenplas,Aditya Rakhecha,Amira Edris,Bassel Shaaban,Eslam Tawfik,Fahad A. Bashiri,Fahd AlAql,Hassan Alsabea,Joseph Haddad,Mohammed El Barbary,Mohamed Salah,Mohamed Abouelyazid,Mudit Kumar,Sulai 대한소아소화기영양학회 2019 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.22 No.6

Purpose: Proper nutrition is essential for brain development during infancy, contributing to the continued development of cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional skills throughout life. Considering the insufficient published data in the Middle East and North Africa, experts drafted a questionnaire to assess the opinions and knowledge of physicians on the impact of nutrition on brain development and cognition in early life. Methods: The questionnaire consisted of two parts: The first focused on the responders' demographic and professional characteristics and the second questioned the role of nutrition in brain development and cognition. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize respondents' characteristics and their responses to questions. Results: A total of 1,500 questionnaires were distributed; 994 physicians responded. The majority of the surveyed physicians (64.4%) felt that nutrition impacts brain development in early childhood (0–4 years), with almost 90% of physicians agreeing/strongly agreeing that preventing iron, zinc, and iodine deficiency would improve global intelligence quotient. The majority of physicians (83%) agreed that head circumference was the most important measure of brain development. The majority of physicians (68.9%) responded that the period from the last trimester until 18 months postdelivery was crucial for brain growth and neurodevelopment, with 76.8% believing that infants breast-fed by vegan mothers have an increased risk of impaired brain development. Conclusion: The results of this study show that practicing physicians significantly agree that nutrition plays an important role in brain and cognitive development and function in early childhood, particularly during the last trimester until 18 months postdelivery.
