To observe the activity of the xanthine oxidase in cerebral ischemia, an ischemic model was made using a transorbital occlusion of the middle cerebral artery(MCA) in cats. Xanthine oxidase activity was measured by means of high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection of uric acid. The results were as follows : 1) The infarction in the territory of the left middle cerebral artery(MCA) was identified with intracardiac perfusion of a 2% triphenyltetrazolium chloride(TTC) solution after transorbital occusion. 2) There was no significant difference between the control and ischemia groups in the total xanthine oxidase activity. 3) In the control group, 38.2% of the total xanthine oxidase was in the oxygen-dependent superoxide-producing oxidase group (Type 0). It had been increased with time in ischemia, despite the total xanthine oxidase activity remaining the same ; particularly at 12 hours (p<0.05) and 24 hours (p<0.01) after occlusion of the left MCA. 4) In the healthy side, the activity of type 0 and its ratio to the total xanthine oxidase activity has not been increased. 5) IN the ischemic side, the conversion of type D xanthine oxidase to the type 0 xanthine oxidase was demonstrated and its rate had been increased with the passage of time.

Topographic electroencephalographic study (CME) is a newly developed method using a microcomputer system that displays the scalp topograph as the square roots of the average power spectra over each EEG frequency band on a color television screen. CME were applied to thirty patients. Fifteen patients out of them with focal neurologic deficit were analysed about CT scan and conventional EEG. The results of the study were as follows: 1) Comparing the results of CME and conventional EEG reading, CME revealed to be slightly more sensitive in detecting asymmetrical depression of background activity than the conventional reading of the EEG. 2) Topograph EEG study was more accurate than conventional EEG in lateralization of the lesion. 3) CME is very useful in topographic and objective diagnosis of functional lesion, although the source of the data is the same as that from the conventional EEG.

The Juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma has histologically the same features as the adult type one. Contrary to the adult type, the parallel arrangement of fibrils in long thin tapering cells of the tumor is peculiarly independent of the environment in which the tumor is growing and it gives rise to the main tumor mass that is usually well circumscribed. The overall incidence is relatively rare of all the brain tumor, it occurs in children mainly from three to five of age. Its predilection sites are the hypothalamus and the optic chiasm. We are reporting an experiance of a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma in a three years old female patient, involving the hypothalamus, basal ganglia and deep white matter of the temporoparietal lobe of the left side.
실험적 뇌경색에서 Lipid Peroxidation에 미치는 Liposome-Entrapped Superoxide Dismutase의 효과에 대한 연구

To observe the role of lipid peroxidation and the effect of liposome-entrapped superoxide dismutase(SOD) on lipid peroxidation in experimental cerebral infarct. an infarction model was created by transorbital occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Malondialdehyde(MDA). which is the degradation product of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the cell wall. were measured at both the cortical and basal ganglia area of cat brain before and after administration of liposome-entrapped superdioxide dismutase The results were as follows : 1) There was a more significant increase of MDA in the left cerebral cortex than in the right cortex after occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery, but there was no significant difference between the 2 sides of the basal ganglia 2) In the left cerebral cortex of the 1 and 3 hours subgroups with in the experimental group. which were treated with liposome-entrapped SOD. there was a more significant decrease of MDA than the left cortex of control group. But there was no significant difference of MDA in the cortex of 6 hours group and the basal ganglia. 3) There was a more significant increase of MDA in the left cerebral cortex of the control group. which was not treated with liposome-entrapped SOD. than in the right cortex. But there was no significant difference of MDA between both sides of the experimental group. 4) In the basal ganglia. there was no significant difference of MDA between the 2 sides of the control and experimental group. It is suggested that brain damage following cerebral infarction can be prevented or attenuated by the treatment of liposome-entrapped SOD.

This is the report of a retrospective study of 42 cases in cervical incompetence, identified clinically by the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at won Kwang University Hospital during the period of 4 years from March, 1981 through march, 1985. All 42 cases were divided as variety of operative techniques such as Mc Donald’s, 33 cases, Shirodkar’s, 5 cases, and Lash’s, 4 cases. The 38 cases of cervical incompetence on pregnant state were divided again by group 1, 30 cases of which cervical os were closed or opened as 1.5cm, by group 2, 8 cases of which cervix is effaced as 50 % or more dilated as 3 cm or more. In the age distribution of cervical incompetence, the range from 30 years to 34 years is most common as 21 cases among the 42 cases of I.I.O.C. On analysing by past history in 42 cases of cervical incompetence, the 25 cases, 59 % had one or more of artificial abortion, in 6 cases, birth trauma, in 6 cases, repeat cervical cerclage respectively. And the others are cervical conization, cervical cauterization, and previous C-section. On comparisons between methods of operation and success rate of fetal salvage, the success rate following the Me Donald’s operation is 84% in series of the 28 cases among the 33 cases, and the success rate of 100% following the Shirodkar’s in series of the 5 cases among the 5 cases, 75 % following the Lash and Lash’s. In the hospital days following the cervical cerclage, 19 cases remained in hospital for 5 days, for 5 days more to 7 days in 11 cases, and for 8 days more 10 days in 6 cases. All the period of the hospital days is considerably longer in group 2 than in group 1. The comparison between operative time and success rate, when cervical cerclage is performed before 17 weeks of pregnancy, is seen 100% of success rate, but in cases of cervical cerclage after 18 weeks of pregnancy is 66.7% as 14 cases of 21 cases. The complication rate following cervical cerclage is 13.2% as 5 cases of all 38 cases.
Fabrication of silicon nanowire FET for protein quantification

We have fabricated silicon nanowire arrays using top-down and low cost micromachining method and evaluated their function in quantifying proteins after their surface modifications. Our developed method can provide highly ordered nanowires on substrates with ease compared to other previously used methods which needed repetitive and complex procedures. For the protein quantification studies, streptavidin-biotin interactions were electrically measured as well as, as a proof of principle study, disease marker levels in serum of patients with stomach cancer was measured. Results show that our Silicon nanowire based field effect transistor (FET) have potential in quantifying protein levels in PBS based as well as in serum.
Fabrication of Metal Nanobridge Arrays using Sacrificial Silicon Nanowire

Novel fabrication method of nanobridge array of various materials was proposed using suspended silicon nanowire array as a sacrificial template structure. Nanobridges of various materials can be simply fabricated by direct deposition with thermal evaporation on the top of prefabricated suspended silicon nanobridge arrays, which are used as a sacrificial structure. Since silicon nanowire can be easily removed by selective dry etching, nanobridge arrays of an intended material are finally obtained. In this paper, metal nanobridges of Ti/Au, around 50-200 nm in thickness and width, 5-20 μm in length were fabricated to prove the advantages of the proposed nanowire or nanobridge fabrication method. The nanobridges of Ti/Au after complete removal of sacrificial silicon nanowire template were well-established and bending of nanobridge caused by the tensile stress was observed after silicon removing. Up to 50 nm and 10 μm of silicon nanowire in diameter and length respectively was also very useful for nanowire templates.
실험적 뇌지주막하출혈에 있어서 뇌기저 동맥의 미세구조의 변화에 관한 연구

Experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH) was produced in adult cats by injection of autologous blood(6㎖) into prepontine cistern by tranclival approach and cisterna magna. The animals were sacrficed 1,3,5,7 or 14days later and basilar artery segments were prepared for electron microscopy. The following observations were made : 1) 1 to 7 days after SAH, electron micrograph showed round-shaped endothelial cells in tunica intima and disappearance of zonular occludens. Endothelial detachment from internal elastic membrane and intracytoplasmic vacuolation of endothelial cells as well as destruction of mitochondrial cirstae in tunica media. 2) 14days after SAH, electron micrograph showed the normal findings in tunica intima and tunica media of the vessel walls. On the basis of the above findings, I found that the ultrastructural changes in the basilar arterial wall, which had presumably developed as a consequence of experimental SAH were reversible.
