Determinants of Bank Lending: Lessons from Three European Countries

Vol.26 No.3

This paper explores the determinants of bank lending to corporate using bank-level characteristics to investigate whether bank regulation can influence the amount of bank lending to corporate for three countries - France, Germany and Italy - for the period from 2011 to 2018. We try to identify factors that might be crucial in deciding the banks’ credit supply to corporate. Our empirical analysis suggests that bank regulation can significantly influence banks’ credit supply decisions and policy makers could improve the bank credit supply by altering regulations. However, such a policy would not have the same effect for foreign banks since their decisions area also subject to the economic conditions of the parent bank.

Employment Dynamics by Different Firm Size in Korea

2020 Journal of the Korean Data Analysis Society Vol.22 No.3

This paper provides empirical evidence that macroeconomic shocks to firms can generate different employment adjustments depending on firm size in Korea. To analyze employment adjustment for different firm sizes, it uses the aggregated employment data across firms and firm-level employment data. Combining evidence from firm-level data that comes from the KIS-Value, it analyzes how firm-level employment responds to regional employment depending on its size. The empirical analysis shows that employment by small and medium-sized firms is more highly synchronized with regional employment than large firms. It also shows that employment by these small and medium-sized firms responds to regional economic conditions. The empirical evidence suggests that smaller firms seem to be more volatile in employment changes and the results imply that any negative shock would lower employment by a reduction in employment by small and medium-sized firms in the economy.

      • Stabilization of 11/9-helical α/β-peptide foldamers in protic solvents

        Lee, Mihye,Shim, Jihyun,Kang, Philjae,Choi, Moon-Gun,Choi, Soo Hyuk The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Chemical communications Vol.52 No.35

<P>alpha/beta-Peptides with alternating alpha-amino acid and cis-2-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (cis-ACHC) residues adopt 11/9-helical conformations, the folding propensity of which decreases as the solvent polarity increases. We report a new cis-ACHC analogue, cis-2-amino-cis-4-methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid, which significantly stabilizes the 11/9-helix propensity in protic solvents.</P>

<i>Drosophila</i> Atlastin regulates the stability of muscle microtubules and is required for synapse development

        Lee, Mihye,Paik, Sang Kyoo,Lee, Min-Jung,Kim, Yoon-Jung,Kim, Sungdae,Nahm, Minyeop,Oh, Soo-Jin,Kim, Hyun-Man,Yim, Jeongbin,Lee, C. Justin,Bae, Yong Chul,Lee, Seungbok Elsevier 2009 Developmental Biology Vol.330 No.2

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is an inherited neurological disorder characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness of the lower extremities. The most common early-onset form of HSP is caused by mutations in the human gene that encodes the dynamin-family GTPase Atlastin-1 (Atl-1). Recently, loss of the <I>Drosophila</I> ortholog of Atl-1 (Atl) has been found to induce locomotor impairments from the earliest adult stages, suggesting the developmental role of atlastin-subfamily GTPases. Here, we provide evidence that Atl is required for normal growth of muscles and synapses at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Atl protein is highly expressed in larval body-wall muscles. Loss-of-function mutations in the <I>atl</I> gene reduce the size of muscles and increase the number of synaptic boutons. Rescue of these defects is accomplished by muscular, but not neuronal expression of Atl. Loss of Atl also disrupts ER and Golgi morphogenesis in muscles and reduces the synaptic levels of the scaffold proteins Dlg and α-spectrin. We also provide evidence that Atl functions with the microtubule-severing protein Spastin to disassemble microtubules in muscles. Finally, we demonstrate that the microtubule-destabilizing drug vinblastine alleviates synapse and muscle defects in <I>atl</I> mutants. Together, our results suggest that Atl controls synapse development and ER and Golgi morphogenesis by regulating microtubule stability.</P>

In-depth study of <i>lin-28</i> suggests selectively conserved let-7 independent mechanism in <i>Drosophila</i>

Lee, Mihye,Nguyen, Thanh My Thi,Kim, Kiyoung Elsevier 2019 Gene Vol.687 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Lin-28 is a conserved RNA-binding protein that is involved in a wide range of developmental processes and pathogenesis. At the molecular level, Lin-28 blocks the maturation of let-7 and regulates translation of certain mRNA targets. In <I>Drosophila</I>, Lin-28 is reported to play a role in oogenesis, muscle formation, and the symmetric division of adult intestinal stem cells. In this study, we characterized <I>Drosophila</I> Lin-28 through a detailed examination of its temporal and spatial expression. Lin-28 is specifically expressed in embryonic nervous and cardiac systems. However, loss or gain of <I>lin-28</I> function does not cause any abnormality during embryonic development. Instead, the ubiquitous overexpression of Lin-28 leads to lethality from late larval stage to pupal stage, and eye-specific overexpression causes severe cell loss. The ectopic expression of human Lin28A has the same effect as <I>Drosophila</I> Lin-28, indicating functional conservation in Lin-28 orthologs. We also examined the effect of Lin-28 on let-7 biogenesis through the mutant and overexpression analysis. Lin-28 does not block the production of let-7 in <I>Drosophila</I>, which suggests the let-7 independent pathway as a molecular mechanism of Lin-28.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Lin-28 is specifically enriched in nervous and cardiac system of <I>Drosophila</I> embryo. </LI> <LI> Mutation of <I>lin-28</I> does not cause any morphological abnormality in fly embryo. </LI> <LI> Ectopic expression of fly Lin-28 or human Lin28A induces the same defect in the eye. </LI> <LI> <I>Drosophila</I> Lin-28 does not block the biogenesis of <I>let-7</I> microRNA during embryogenesis. </LI> </UL> </P>

Does Population Aging Contribute to Increased Fiscal Spending?

2019 Asian Journal of Business Environment (AJBE) Vol.9 No.4

Purpose – With rapid population aging in Korea, changes in the population structure will result in a rise in the fiscal burden. This paper investigates the effects of population aging on fiscal spending based on Korea’s province data and country panel data from the OECD. Research design, data, and methodology - We use province-level fiscal data from Local Finance Integrated Open System and the Korean Statistical Information Service and also collect country panel data from the OECD. To investigate the relationship between population aging and fiscal expenditures, our analysis uses the fixed effects model. Results - The empirical analysis based on Korean local finance and country panel data show that population aging has a positive impact on social welfare expenditures and it also has a positive impact on spending related to children and the elderly, implying that population aging may lead to an increase in fiscal spending via an increase in social welfare expenditures and spending related to children and the elderly. Conclusion - These empirical results suggest that countries like Korea that expect to experience rapid population aging need to pay more attention to prepare for the expected increase in age-related spending in the near future.

      • Understanding the Critical Role of the Ag Nanophase in Boosting the Initial Reversibility of Transition Metal Oxide Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

        Lee, Daehee,Wu, Mihye,Kim, Dong-Hyun,Chae, Changju,Cho, Min Kyung,Kim, Ji-Young,Lee, Sun Sook,Choi, Sungho,Choi, Youngmin,Shin, Tae Joo,Chung, Kyung Yoon,Jeong, Sunho,Moon, Jooho American Chemical Society 2017 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.9 No.26

<P>The initial reversible capacity, a critical impediment in transition metal oxide-based anodes, is augmented in conversion-reaction-involved CoO anodes for lithium-ion batteries, by incorporating a chemically synthesized Ag nanophase. With an increase in the added amount of Ag nanophase from 5 to 15 wt %, the initial capacity loss decreases linearly up to 31.7%. The Ag nanophase maintains its pristine metallic nature without undergoing phase transformations, even during repeated vigorous electrochemical reactions of the active CoO phase. Complementary ex situ chemical/physical analyses suggest that the Ag nanophase promotes the catalytic generation of reversible gel-like/polymeric films wherein lithium ions are stored capacitively in the low-voltage region below 0.7 V during discharging. These scientific findings would provide a heretofore unrecognized pathway to resolving a major issue associated with the critical irreversibility in conversion-type transition metal oxide anodes.</P>

Can Idiosyncratic Shocks to Firms Explain Macroeconomic Growth and Fluctuations in Korea?

2015 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC THEORY AND ECONOMETRICS Vol.26 No.3

This paper examines whether idiosyncratic firm-level shocks can explain an important part of aggregate movements as in Gabaix (2011). Its find-ings show that, different from the case in the United States, the idiosyncratic movements of the largest 20 firms in Korea appear to explain up to 18% of the variations in output growth between 1981 and 2011. In addition, they are also useful in explaining the cyclical component of GDP. It is found that the top three firms movements account for 58% of the cyclical component of GDP during the period from 2001q1 to 2012q3. This empirical evidence suggests that the granular hypothesis also holds in Korea.
