Peroxidase gene markers revealed genetic diversity and population structure in okra germplasm

        Yildiz Mehtap,Furan Mehmet Alp,Koçak Metin,Sadık Gökhan,Kuzğun Cansu,Al-Khafaji Mahdi,Bahjat Noor Maiwan 한국식물생명공학회 2022 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.16 No.2

Okra is a widely grown vegetable crop in various regions of the world and provides significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. Numerous researchers have documented the efficacy of phenotypic and molecular classification of the diverse okra germplasm collections found throughout the world. The genetic variation of Turkish okra germplasm, which included 39 genotypes, was characterized using 14 POGP (peroxidase gene polymorphism) primer pairs in comparison to other world okra genotypes and accessions, which contained 27 genotypes. A total of 84 bands were generated using 14 POGP primer pairs, with 43 (51%) of them being polymorphic between okra accessions. The values of polymorphism information content ranged from 0.03 to 0.99, with an average of 0.48. The range and mean values for gene diversity (h) were 0.03–0.42 and 0.25, respectively. Shannon’s information index (I) varied between 0.07 and 0.62 for each POGP marker, with a mean of 0.40. The most divergent genotypes were found to have a GS value of 0.23, with IN-7 and TR20-3 being the genetically most distant. The STRUCTURE, PCoA and Neighbor-joining analysis separated the okra germplasm into three populations. AMOVA revealed 23 and 77% variance across and within populations, respectively. Although the germplasm of okra is generally homogenous, the influence of shared genes is more significant. For the first time, the genetic composition of okra was determined using peroxidase gene markers.

A study on dynamic modulus of self-consolidating rubberized concrete

Mehmet Emiroğlu,Servet Yildiz,M. Halidun Keleştemur 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2015 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.15 No.5

In this study, dynamic modulus of elasticity of self-consolidating rubberized concrete is evaluated by using results of ultrasonic pulse velocity and resonance frequency tests. Additionally, correlation between dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength results is compared. For evaluating the dynamic modulus of elasticity of self-consolidating rubberized concrete, prismatic specimens having 100 x 100 x 500 mm dimensions are prepared. Dynamic modulus of elasticity values obtained by non-destructive measurements techniques are well agreed with those given in the literature.

Müller Muscle-conjunctival Resection with or without Tarsectomy and Combined with Bandage Contact Lens Use in Ptosis Patients with Corneal Graft

Mehmet Serhat Mangan,Serap Yurttaser Ocak,Ece Turan Vural,Elvin Yildiz 대한안과학회 2021 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.35 No.1

Purpose: To examine the efficacy of ptosis correction with a Müller muscle-conjunctival resection with or without tarsectomy(MMCR±T), combined with bandage contact lens (BCL) use, in corneal graft patients. Methods: Seven patients with corneal grafts who underwent MMCR±T for treatment of ptosis were evaluated retrospectively. A BCL was applied to the grafts at the end of the surgery. The collected data included preoperative and postoperativevisual acuity, marginal reflex distance 1 (MRD-1), presence of Hering’s dependency by the phenylephrine test, symmetry outcomes, and complications after MMCR±T. Results: The average duration between the penetrating keratoplasty and MMCR±T was 14 months, with a follow-up timeof 10.4 months after MMCR±T. Hering’s dependency was observed in four (57.2%) patients before MMCR±T, and MRD-1 wasincreased in all patients based on preoperative phenylephrine tests. The mean preoperative MRD-1 was -0.14 ± 0.55 mm, andthe mean postoperative MRD-1 was 2.35 ± 0.89 mm (p < 0.0001). Symmetry outcomes of perfect (<0.5 mm), good (0.5–1mm), and fair (≥1 mm) were noted after MMCR±T in three, three, and one patients, respectively. During the follow-up, no obviouscorneal epitheliopathy, keratitis, or corneal graft rejection/failure were noted in any cases. BCL use was well toleratedby all patients. Conclusions: Most patients achieved good surgical outcomes with the application of the BCL to protect the graft and withthe use of the phenylephrine test and Hering’s dependency to predict the final eyelid position and symmetry. MMCR±T combinedwith BCL may therefore represent an alternative approach for correction of ptosis in patients with corneal graft.

Sepsis and Meningitis due to Listeria Monocytogenes

        Orhan Yildiz,Bilgehan Aygen,Duygu Esel,Uner Kayabas,Emine Alp,Bulent Sumerkan,Mehmet Doganay 연세대학교의과대학 2007 Yonsei medical journal Vol.48 No.3

Purpose: This study focused on the effect of immuno-compromising conditions on the clinical presentation of severe listerial infection. Patients and Methods: Nine human listeriosis cases seen from 1991-2002 were reviewed. All adult patients, from whose blood, peritoneal fluid or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) the L. monocytogenes was isolated, were included in this retrospective study. Results: Listeriosis presented as primary sepsis with positive blood cultures in 5 cases and meningitis with positive CSF cultures in 4 cases. All of these patients had at least one underlying disease, most commonly, hematologic malignancy, diabetes mellitus, amyloidosis and hepatic cirrhosis; 55.6% had received immunosuppressive or corticosteroid therapy within a week before the onset of listeriosis. The patients were adults with a mean age of 60 years. Fever, night sweats, chills and lethargy were the most common symptoms; high temperature (>38℃), tachycardia, meningeal signs and poor conditions in general were the most common findings on admission. The mortality rate was 33.3% and was strictly associated with the severity of the underlying disease. Mortality differences were significant between sepsis (20%) and meningitis (50%) patients. Conclusion: Listeriosis as an uncommon infection in our region and that immuno- suppressive therapy is an important pre-disposing factor of listeriosis. Sepsis and meningitis were more common in this group of patients and had the highest case-fatality rate for food-borne illnesses.

Cavitating nozzle flows in micro- and minichannels under the effect of turbulence

Morteza Ghorbani,Mehmet Yildiz,Devrim Gozuacik,Ali Kosar 대한기계학회 2016 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.30 No.6

The cavitation phenomenon inside micro- and minichannel configurations was numerically investigated. The simulations for each channel were performed at different upstream pressures varying from 1 to 15 MPa. Two microchannel configurations with inner diameters of 152 and 254 μm and two minichannel configurations with inner diameters of 504 and 762 μm were simulated. To validate the numerical approach, micro-jet impingement from a microchannel with an inner diameter of 152 μm was first simulated at different Reynolds numbers. Then, the mixture model was used to model the multiphase flow inside the channels. The results of this study present major differences in the cavitating flows between the micro- and miniscale channels and show that the pressure profile and vapor phase distribution exhibit different features. The static pressure drops to negative values (tensile stress) in microchannels, while the minimum static pressure in minichannels is found to be equal to vapor saturation pressure, and higher velocity magnitudes especially at the outlet are visible in the microchannels. It is shown that for higher upstream pressures, the cavitating flow extends over the length of the micro/minichannel, thereby increasing the possibility of collapse at the outlet. The effect of energy associated with turbulence was investigated at high Reynolds numbers for both micro/minichannels and its impact was analyzed using wall shear stress, turbulence kinetic energy and mean velocity at various locations of the micro/minichannels.

Renal tubular P-glycoprotein expression is reduced in plasma cell disorders

( Cihan Heybeli ),( Mehmet Asi Oktan ),( Hayri Ustun Arda ),( Serkan Yildiz ),( Mehtat Unlu ),( Caner Cavdar ),( Aykut Sifil ),( Ali Celik ),( Sulen Sarioglu ),( Taner Camsari ) 대한신장학회 2019 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.38 No.2

Background: P-glycoprotein (P-gp) transports many chemicals that vary greatly in their structure and function. It is normally expressed in renal proximal tubular cells. We hypothesized that P-gp expression influences light chain excretion. Therefore, we investigated whether renal tubular P-gp expression is altered in patients with plasma cell disorders. Methods: We evaluated renal biopsy specimens from patients with plasma cell disorders (n = 16) and primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (the control group, n = 17). Biopsies were stained with an anti-P-gp antibody. Loss of P-gp expression was determined semi-quantitatively. Groups were compared for loss of P-gp expression, and clinical variables. Results: P-gp expression loss was more severe in patients with plasma cell disorders than it was in those with glomerulonephritis (P = 0.021). In contrast, clinical and histological parameters including serum creatinine, level of urinary protein excretion, and interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy grade were not significantly different between the groups. P-gp expression loss increased with age in patients with plasma cell disorders (P = 0.071). This expression loss was not associated with serum creatinine, the level of urinary protein excretion or the interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy grade. There was no significant association between the severity of P-gp expression loss with the types and serum levels of light chains, isotypes and serum immunoglobulin levels. Conclusion: Renal tubular P-gp expression is significantly down-regulated in patients with plasma cell disorders characterized by nephrotic range proteinuria. Additional studies are needed to determine whether reintroduction of renal tubular P-gp expression would mitigate the proximal tubular injury that is caused by free-light chains.

Open healing of contained and non-contained extraction sockets covered with a ribose cross-linked collagen membrane: a pilot study

        Friedmann, Anton,Meskeleviciene, Viktorija,Yildiz, Mehmet Selim,Gotz, Werner,Park, Jung-Chul,Fischer, Kai R. Korean Academy of Periodontology 2020 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.50 No.6

Purpose: This study investigated whether the placement of ribose cross-linked collagen (RCLC) membranes without primary soft tissue closure predictably resulted in sufficient alveolar ridge preservation in contained and non-contained extraction sockets. Methods: Membranes were positioned across extraction sockets, undermining full-thickness flaps, and the gingival margins were fixed by double-interrupted sutures without crossed horizontal mattress sutures for 1 week. In non-contained sockets, a bone substitute was used to support the membrane within the bony envelope. Radiographs and clinical images obtained 4 months later were analyzed by ImageJ software using non-parametric tests. Results: In 18 patients, 20 extraction sockets healed uneventfully and all sites received standard-diameter implants (4.1, 4.8, or 5.0 mm) without additional bone augmentation. Soft tissues and the muco-gingival border were well maintained. A retrospective analysis of X-rays and clinical photographs showed non-significant shrinkage in the vertical and horizontal dimensions (P=0.575 and P=0.444, respectively). The new bone contained vital bone cells embedded in mineralized tissues. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this pilot study, open healing of RCLC membranes may result in sufficient bone volume for implant placement without additional bone augmentation in contained and non-contained extraction sockets.
