Pancreatic Islet Cell Amyloidosis Manifesting as a Large Pancreas
Mehmet Ruhi Onur,Mehmet Yalnız,Ahmet Kursad Poyraz,Ibrahim Hanifi Özercan,Yusuf Ozkan 대한영상의학회 2012 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.13 No.1
A 39-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with epigastric pain lasting for two months. Laboratory results showed impaired glucose tolerance. Ultrasonography of the patient showed a hypoechoic, diffusely enlarged pancreas. CT revealed a large pancreas, with multiple calcifications. On MRI, a diffusely enlarged pancreas was seen hypointense on both T1- and T2-weighted images with heterogeneous enhancement after gadolinium administration. A biopsy of the pancreas revealed primary amyloidosis of islet cells. Decreased signal on T1-weighted images without inflammation findings on CT and MRI were clues for the diagnosis.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of atmospheric plasma (APL) versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion of self-adhesive resin cement to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty plates of machined titanium (Ti) discs were divided into five groups (n=12): 1) Untreated (CNT); 2) Sandblasted (SAB); 3) Tribochemically treated (ROC); 4) Tungsten CarbideBur (TCB); 5) APL treated (APL). SEM analysis and surface roughness (Ra) measurements were performed. Self-adhesive resin cement was bonded to the Ti surfaces and shear bond strength (SBS) tests, Ra and failure mode examinations were carried out. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and chi-squared test. RESULTS The lowest SBS value was obtained with CNT and was significantly different from all other groups except for APL. The ROC showed the highest SBS and Ra values of all the groups. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the effect of APL on SBS and Ra was not sufficient and it may not be a potential for promoting adhesion to titanium.

Mehmet Musa Ozcan,Osman Sadıc,Glucan Ozkan 한국식품영양과학회 2006 Journal of medicinal food Vol.9 No.3
A series of essential oils of 11 Turkish plant spices [black thyme, cumin, fennel (sweet), laurel, marjoram, mint, oregano, pickling herb, sage, savory, and thyme], used in foods mainly for their flavor, aromas, and preservation, inherbal tea, in alternative medicines, and in natural therapies, were screened for antibacterial effects at 1:50, 1:100, 1:250, and1:500 dilutions by the paper disc diffusion method against six Bacillusspecies (Bacillus amyloliquefaciensATCC 3842, Bacil-lus brevisFMC 3, Bacillus cereusFMC 19, Bacillus megateriumDSM 32, Bacillus subtilisIMG 22, and B. subtilisvar. nigerATCC 10). All of the tested essential oils (except for cumin) showed antibacterial activity against one or more of the Bacil-lus species used in this study. Generally, the essential oils at 1:50 and 1:100 levels were more effective. Only one essentialoil (laurel) was not found effective against the tested bacteria. The bacterium most sensitive to all of the spice essential oilswas B. amyloliquefaciensATCC 3842. Based on the results of this study, it is likely that essential oils of some spices maybe used as antimicrobial agents to prevent the spoilage of food products.

Dynamical Behavior of a Third-Order Difference Equation with Arbitrary Powers
Gumus, Mehmet,Abo-Zeid, Raafat,Ocalan, Ozkan Department of Mathematics 2017 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.57 No.2
The aim of this paper is to investigate the dynamical behavior of the difference equation $$x_{n+1}={\frac{{\alpha}x_n}{{\beta}+{\gamma}x^p_{n-1}x^q_{n-2}}},\;n=0,1,{\ldots}$$, where the parameters ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$, p, q are non-negative numbers and the initial values $x_{-2}$, $x_{-1}$, $x_0$ are positive numbers. Also, some numerical examples are given to verify our theoretical results.
GEP Modeling of Oxygen Transfer Efficiency Prediction in Aeration Cascades
Ahmet Baylar,Mehmet Unsal,Fahri Ozkan 대한토목학회 2011 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.15 No.5
Artificial intelligence is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider intelligent. In the past few years, the applications of artificial intelligence methods have attracted the attention of many investigators. Many artificial intelligence methods have been applied in various areas of civil and environmental engineering. The aim of this study is to develop models to estimate oxygen transfer efficiency in nappe, transition and skimming flow regimes over stepped cascades. For this aim, genetic expression programming, a new member of genetic computing techniques, is used. It is similar, but not equivalent to genetic algorithms, nor genetic programming. For nappe, transition and skimming flow regimes, three models are constructed using the experimental data. The test results indicate that for the model equations obtained, the correlation coefficients are very high and the minimum square error values are less than 0.0033. So, genetic expression programming approach can be successfully used in stepped cascades to predict the oxygen transfer efficiency.

The primary purpose of a weir is to measure discharge. Moreover, it can be used as a tool to increase aeration efficiency in rivers, fish hatcheries, and water treatment plants. A free overfall jet from a weir plunging into downstream water causes entrainment of theair bubbles if the free overfall jet velocity exceeds a certain critical value and hence aeration occurs. In recent years, different softcomputing systems have been successfully employed for the solution of complex problems. The aim of this study is to developmodels to estimate air entrainment and aeration efficiencies of weirs using soft computing systems. For this aim, genetic expressionprogramming, a recently developed artificial intelligence technique, is used. Genetic Expression Programming (GEP) is a geneticalgorithm as it uses populations of individuals, selects them according to fitness, and introduces genetic variation using one or moregenetic operators. GEP is preferred since it generates a mathematical function which fits to given experimental data. The resultsindicate that there are good agreements between the measured values and the values obtained by the genetic expression programmingmodels. These good agreements confirm the validity of the developed genetic expression programming models.

Objective: To determine factors influencing overall survival following recurrence (OSFR) inwomen with low-risk endometrial cancer (EC) treated with surgery alone. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective department database review was performed to identifypatients with recurrent “low-risk EC” (patients having less than 50% myometrial invasion[MMI] with grade 1 or 2 endometrioid EC) at 10 gynecologic oncology centers in Turkey. Demographic, clinicopathological, and survival data were collected. Results: We identified 67 patients who developed recurrence of their EC after initially beingdiagnosed and treated for low-risk EC. For the entire study cohort, the median time torecurrence (TTR) was 23 months (95% confidence interval [CI]=11.5–34.5; standard error[SE]=5.8) and the median OSFR was 59 months (95% CI=12.7–105.2; SE=23.5). We observed32 (47.8%) isolated vaginal recurrences, 6 (9%) nodal failures, 19 (28.4%) peritoneal failures, and 10 (14.9%) hematogenous disseminations. Overall, 45 relapses (67.2%) were locoregionalwhereas 22 (32.8%) were extrapelvic. According to the Gynecologic Oncology Group(GOG) Trial-99, 7 (10.4%) out of 67 women with recurrent low-risk EC were qualified as highintermediaterisk (HIR). The 5-year OSFR rate was significantly higher for patients with TTR≥36 months compared to those with TTR <36 months (74.3% compared to 33%, p=0.001). On multivariate analysis for OSFR, TTR <36 months (hazard ratio [HR]=8.46; 95% CI=1.65–43.36; p=0.010) and presence of HIR criteria (HR=4.62; 95% CI=1.69–12.58; p=0.003) weresignificant predictors. Conclusion: Low-risk EC patients recurring earlier than 36 months and those carrying HIRcriteria seem more likely to succumb to their tumors after recurrence.
