      • Extrusion of CP Grade Titanium Powders Eliminating the need for Hot Pre-compaction via Hot Isostatic Pressing

        Chemically pure, hydride/dehydride titanium powders were cold pre-compacted then extruded at and under argon. The extrusions were 100% dense with a narrow band of surface porosity and equiaxed microstructure of similar magnitude to the starting material. The tensile properties of the bars were better than conventionally extruded CP titanium bar product. Outcomes from this study have assisted in the identification of a number of key characteristics important to the extrusion of titanium from pre-compacted CP titanium powders, allowing the elimination of canning and hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of billets prior to extrusion as per conventional PM processes.

        Abelson Virus Transformation Prevents TRAIL Expression by Inhibiting FoxO3a and NF-${\kappa}$B

        The Abelson Murine Leukemia Virus (A-MuLV) encodes v-Abl, an oncogenic form of the ubiquitous cellular nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, c-Abl. A-MuLV specifically transforms murine B cell precursors both in vivo and in vitro. Inhibition of v-Abl by addition of the small molecule inhibitor STI-571 causes these cells to arrest in the G1 phase of the cell cycle prior to undergoing apoptosis. We found that inhibition of v-Abl activity results in upregulation of transcription of the pro-apoptotic TNF-family ligand tumornecrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL). Similarly to BCR-Abl-transformed human cells, activation of the transcription factor Foxo3a led to increased TRAIL transcription and induction of a G1 arrest in the absence of v-Abl inhibition, and this effect could be inhibited by the expression of a constitutively active AKT mutant. Multiple pathways act to inhibit FoxO3a activity within Abelson cells. In addition to diminishing transcription factor activity via inhibitory phosphorylation by AKT family members, we found that inhibition of IKK${\beta}$ activity results in an increase in the total protein level of FoxO3a. Furthermore overexpression of the p65 subunit of NF-${\kappa}$B results in an increase in TRAIL transcription and in apoptosis and deletion of IKK${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ diminishes TRAIL expression and induction. We conclude that in Abelson cells, the inhibition of both NF-${\kappa}$B and FoxO3a activity is required for suppression of TRAIL transcription and maintenance of the transformed state.

        체재형주말농장의 개발 방향에 관한 연구 전문가 설문조사를 중심으로

        The purpose of this study is to act as a preliminary inquiry into the development of a Korean Garden Community (K-GC) model as an element of multi- habitation community. The proposed model is based on data collected from thirty-four experts` survey and case studies in both Korea and foreign countries. The main findings are: 1) eclectic model that will be resulted in urban-rural co-development by bridging such values as social welfare of Germany and regional economic development of Japan; 2) Main developers are suggested to be municipal governments or Korea Rural Community Corporation whereas local community organizations and local farm corporations should be a primary operating body; 3) Enacting a special regulation is to be needed to promote and stabilize the K-GC; and 4) Two different types of K-GC are needed to meet the geo-political and economic needs of each community which are called as Suburb and Countryside type of K-GC. The suburb-type of K-GC focuses on social welfare in a scale developed by public sectors, while countryside-types of K-GC emphasize regional revitalization in a medium-size complex led by citizens and groups.

        Type VI secretion is a major virulence determinant in <i>Burkholderia mallei</i>

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P> <I>Burkholderia mallei</I> is a host‐adapted pathogen and a category B biothreat agent. Although the <I>B. mallei</I> VirAG two‐component regulatory system is required for virulence in hamsters, the virulence genes it regulates are unknown. Here we show with expression profiling that overexpression of <I>virAG</I> resulted in transcriptional activation of ∼60 genes, including some involved in capsule production, actin‐based intracellular motility, and type VI secretion (T6S). The 15 genes encoding the major sugar component of the homopolymeric capsule were up‐expressed > 2.5‐fold, but capsule was still produced in the absence of <I>virAG</I>. Actin tail formation required <I>virAG</I> as well as <I>bimB</I>, <I>bimC</I> and <I>bimE</I>, three previously uncharacterized genes that were activated four‐ to 15‐fold when VirAG was overproduced. Surprisingly, actin polymerization was found to be dispensable for virulence in hamsters. In contrast, genes encoding a T6S system were up‐expressed as much as 30‐fold and mutations in this T6S gene cluster resulted in strains that were avirulent in hamsters. SDS‐PAGE and mass spectrometry demonstrated that BMAA0742 was secreted by the T6S system when <I>virAG</I> was overexpressed. Purified His‐tagged BMAA0742 was recognized by glanders antiserum from a horse, a human and mice, indicating that this Hcp‐family protein is produced <I>in vivo</I> during infection.</P>

        An IRT modeling of change over time for repeated measures item response data using a random weights linear logistic test model approach

        In this study, repeated measures item response data from an English language proficiency (ELP) test administered over 2 years were analyzed by item response theory-based approaches to model change over time. First, change over time was modeled by an item side change approach where change was parameterized at the item level. Second, more importantly, this study introduced and demonstrated an application of an interaction model for change, which overcomes a limitation of the item side change approach by allowing interaction effects between persons and item side change parameters. The results showed that student changes in the ELP data used in this study should be modeled for the three sub-content areas and that modeling interaction for change was necessary.

        Quality assurance in Australian higher education: historical and future development

        Higher education policies related to quality assurance are implemented in many countries. The purposes of such policies are to ensure the provision for high-quality education, university accountability and transparency in the use of public funding and meeting the needs of the diverse stakeholders. The current Australian Higher Education Quality Assurance Framework was implemented in the year 2000. It can be described that the framework has been enjoyed by universities, academics and other providers in Australia. This paper provides a brief history of quality assurance, its evolution in higher education in Australia and current changes and trends in quality assurance in other developed countries. It then provides an analysis of the success and deficiencies of the current framework used in Australia and suggestions which may be helpful in the development of the new framework. The analysis includes the thoughts of the three authors based on their experience in managing quality and reviews in seven different institutions and the views of more than 40 participants who are staff members from 25 Australian universities.

        Impact of chloride on uranium(VI) speciation in acidic sulfate ion exchange systems: Towards seawater-tolerant mineral processing circuits

        Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we have identified the mechanism by which chloride impacts theextraction of U(VI) by a weak base anion exchange resin from acidic sulfate solutions. The amount ofchloride present affects U(VI) speciation both in the feed solutions and adsorbed by the resin, and wefindthree distinct U(VI) species taken up by the resin across the salinity gradient, directly corresponding tochanges in levels of U(VI) extraction. Thesefindings are integral to the effective design of mineralprocessing circuits incorporating seawater—a cheaper and more sustainable water source than freshwater.

      • Fecal metabarcoding and prey pellets reveal differences in prey breadth of Vespa mandarinia in native and novel ecosystems

        Vespa mandarinia (Vespidae: Hymenoptera) is one of the two largest true hornets known to science. The species is a noted predator of social Hymenoptera and a significant pest of managed honey bees in its native range, but is also known to feed on a wide variety of other species when available. Most of the prey records for V. mandarinia are derived from visual observations in Japan, with sparse observations from other parts of its native range. A population of V. mandarinia was detected in North America in 2019 and five nests were removed between 2019 and 2021. We extracted DNA from larval meconia from four nests collected in Washington State, USA, and amplified the CO1 region to determine the potential prey base. We compared these with sequences generated from three nests in the Republic of Korea, and with prey pellets collected from foraging hornets at several locations in Korea. Results indicate that the prey base was much wider in the ROK than the USA, although social Hymenoptera were the most abundant and common prey items in both regions. Prey range seems to be bound by an intersection of organism size and local biodiversity, with little evidence to suggest that the latter is a limiting factor in colony success.
