Universal and Specific Features in Intonation Perception

This paper reports the results of an experimental phonetic study of intonation contrasts perception by speakers of British English, Japanese and Russian. Six series of re-synthesized two-syllable rise-fall contours with manipulated parameters of the rise in the first and the fall in the second syllable were employed in the experiment. Modifications of pitch height were executed in 2 st steps, and of duration in 30ms steps. The subjects, who were native speakers of British English, Japanese and Russian, identified the sentence type of presented re-synthesized stimuli. The results of the experiments demonstrate overall similarity of the perception strategies across the three groups of subjects, especially regarding the thresholds of declarative' sentence type judgement. Non-declarative judgements are more language-specific. The results can be employed for the teaching of English, Japanese and Russian as foreign languages as well as for speech synthesis and recognition.
Modelling the Economic Policy of a Tax Shield in the Context of Overcoming Crises in the Economy

The tax shield is defined as the amount of possible payments, which in turn can increase or decrease by the difference in planned changes and market fluctuations in the supply of products. The main purpose of the study is to outline the main aspects of the approach to assessing the tax burden on capital investments. A leading method of investigating this problem is the method of uncertain coefficients, which was used to obtain difference equations of high accuracy. The novelty of the research is determined by the fact that the tax shield and its tools are determined according to price fluctuations on the main products of the enterprise. For a formal expression of the influence of incentives to invest an indicator called “tax shield” was developed. It has been revealed that at the theoretical and practical levels, the impact of tax mechanisms on the development of the national economy is assessed. The practical significance of the research is determined by the fact that for the first time such tools as a stagnating economic situation are considered. This will allow predicting tax revenues and adjusting the growth of the economy in the conditions of crisis.

Background: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) coming from bone marrow into the peripheral circulation promote neovascularization of tumors and development of metastases. In some cases, the levels of circulating EPCs were shown to correlate with response to chemotherapy and may be a biomarker for the drug treatment outcome. Here we examined how the number of circulating EPCs correlates with the effi cacy of radiotherapy and is to be used as a biomarker for the outcome of combined cancer treatment involving radiation exposure. Methods: Circulating EPCs stained with anti-CD34, anti-CD133 or anti-VEGF receptor- 2 antibodies were quantifi ed by fi ow cytometry in the peripheral blood samples of patients with breast or lung cancer. Dozens of those patients were categorized and thoroughly investigated; gender, age, stage/type/size/growth dynamics of tumors, responses to therapy, progression-free survival time periods were analyzed toward correlations with the counted numbers of circulating EPCs. Results: The levels of circulating EPCs were found to be increased in all studied groups of breast and lung cancer patients as compared with healthy donors (n = 36; p < 0.01). The signifi cantly higher levels of EPCs were detected in peripheral blood of patients undergone high-dose (gamma-photon) radiation exposure in the course of combined treatment as compared with patients treated without radiotherapy (n = 48; p < 0.05). Among the irradiated patients, the higher levels of circulating EPCs often coincided with poor response to radiotherapy and poor outcome. In contrast, combination with radiotherapy was considerably more effective in patient groups with the low EPC levels where longer progression-free time periods were achieved. Conclusions: Circulating bone marrow-derived EPCs may be a predictive biomarker for the effi cacy of anticancer therapy and prognosis. Furthermore, EPCs may be a therapeutic target for chemo- and radiosensitization of tumors.

Strain monitoring of reinforced concrete with OTDR-based FBG interrogation technique

An experimental study is presented of the application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation method based on optical time-domain reflectometery (OTDR) to monitoring strain in bent reinforced concrete beams. The results obtained with the OTDR-based method are shown to agree well with the direct spectral measurements. Strain sensitivity, resolution and measurement range amounted to 0.0028 dB/strain; 30 strain; 4000 strain, correspondingly. Significant differences are observed in surface and inner deformations of the test beams which can be attributed to different mechanical properties of concrete and steel reinforcement. The prospects of using OTDR-based FBG interrogation technique in real-life applications are discussed.

<P>The cyclocondensation of 1,2-phenylenediamine (I) with acetone was investigated in the presence of Fe-containing microporous nickel phosphate molecular sieves (Fe-VSB-5) and Fe-containing mesoporous mesophase materials (Fe-MMM). The main product was 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine (1,5-benzodiazepine) with 86-88% yield at 50 degrees C, with an acetone/(I) molar ratio of 2.5 in methanol as the reaction medium. The Fe content was found to affect not only the reaction rate but also yield of 1,5-benzodiazepine. The high reaction rate and yield of 1,5-benzodiazepine were-achieved with isolated iron sites in frameworks of Fe-VSB-5 and Fe-MMM.</P>
Mobility of magnetic helicoid in holmium nano-layer

Spin valves with holmium layers and three-layer structures metal/Ho/metal were prepared by magnetron sputtering. A holmium layer in the spin valves is polycrystalline with weak axial <002> texture. The structural coherence length along the hexagonal c-axis is approximately 2/5 of the total thickness of the holmium layer. Field dependences of the spin valves magnetoresistance were measured at different temperatures. Correlation was revealed between magnetic state in holmium layer and the shape of magnetoresistive curve. Deviation of magnetic moments of the reference layer and the adjacent part of holmium from the applied magnetic field was investigated. The field induced mobility of the magnetic helicoid in holmium layers was revealed.
