<P>The consolidation of long-term memory for sensitization and synaptic facilitation in <I>Aplysia</I> requires synthesis of new mRNA including the immediate early gene <I>Aplysia</I> CCAAT enhancer-binding protein (<I>ApC/EBP</I>). After the rapid induction of <I>ApC/EBP</I> expression in response to repeated treatments of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), <I>ApC/EBP</I> mRNA is temporarily expressed in sensory neurons of sensory-to-motor synapses. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the rapid degradation of <I>ApC/EBP</I> transcript is not known. Here, we cloned an AU-rich element (ARE)-binding protein, ApAUF1, which functions as a destabilizing factor for <I>ApC/EBP</I> mRNA. ApAUF1 was found to bind to the 3′ UTR of <I>ApC/EBP</I> mRNA that contains AREs and subsequently reduces the expression of <I>ApC/EBP</I> 3′ UTR-containing reporter genes. Moreover, overexpression of ApAUF1 inhibited the induction of <I>ApC/EBP</I> mRNA in sensory neurons and also impaired long-term facilitation of sensory-to-motor synapses by repetitive 5-HT treatments. These results provide evidence for a critical role of the posttranscriptional modification of <I>ApC/EBP</I> mRNA during the consolidation of synaptic plasticity.</P>
Gene-set association tests for next-generation sequencing data

<P>Motivation: Recently, many methods have been developed for conducting rare-variant association studies for sequencing data. These methods have primarily been based on gene-level associations but have not been proven to be as effective as expected. Gene-set-level tests have shown great advantages over gene-level tests in terms of power and robustness, because complex diseases are often caused by multiple genes that comprise of biological gene sets. Results: Here, we propose several novel gene-set tests that employ rapid and efficient dimensionality reduction. The performance of these tests was investigated using extensive simulations and application to 1058 whole-exome sequences from a Korean population. We identified some known pathways and novel pathways whose rare or common variants are associated with elevated liver enzymes and replicated the results in an independent cohort.</P>

<P>We demonstrated the influence of the air on blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes by exposing the position of organic layers for various ambient exposure times to construct the disordered organic-organic interface in this work. To compare the effects of each hole and electron transporting path, organic layers were exposed according to the exciton blocking layer and emitting layer. Then we analyzed electrical and morphological properties using current-voltage-luminance measurement as well as other electrical and chemical analysis, such as impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.</P>
Transgenic overexpression of p23 induces spontaneous hydronephrosis in mice

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>p23 is a cochaperone of heat shock protein 90 and also interacts functionally with numerous steroid receptors and kinases. However, the <I>in vivo</I> roles of p23 remain unclear. To explore its <I>in vivo</I> function, we generated the transgenic (TG) mice ubiquitously overexpressing p23. The p23 TG mice spontaneously developed kidney abnormalities closely resembling human hydronephrosis. Consistently, kidney functions deteriorate significantly in the p23 TG mice compared to their wild‐type (WT) littermates. Furthermore, the expression of target genes for aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), such as cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (Cyp1A1) and cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily B, polypeptide 1 (Cyp1B1), were induced in the kidneys of the p23 TG mice. These results indicate that the overexpression of p23 contributes to the development of hydronephrosis through the upregulation of the AhR pathway <I>in vivo.</I></P>
Low-dose curcumin enhances hippocampal neurogenesis and memory retention in young mice

Adult neurogenesis generates new functional neurons from adult neural stem cells in various regions, including the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and subgranular zone (SGZ) of hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Available evidence shows hippocampal neurogenesis can be negatively or positively regulated by dietary components. In a previous study, we reported that curcumin (diferuloylmethane; a polyphenolic found in curry spice) stimulates the proliferation of embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs) by activating adaptive cellular stress responses. Here, we investigated whether subchronic administration of curcumin (once daily at 0.4, 2, or 10 mg/kg for 14 days) promotes hippocampal neurogenesis and neurocognitive function in young (5-week-old) mice. Oral administration of low-dose curcumin (0.4 mg/kg) increased the proliferation and survival of newly generated cells in hippocampus, but surprisingly, high-dose curcumin (10 mg/kg) did not effectively upregulate the proliferation or survival of newborn cells. Furthermore, hippocampal BDNF levels and phosphorylated CREB activity were elevated in only low-dose curcumin-treated mice. Passive avoidance testing revealed that low-dose curcumin increased cross-over latency times, indicating enhanced memory retention, and an in vitro study showed that low-concentration curcumin increased the proliferative activity of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) by upregulating NF1X levels. Collectively, our findings suggest that low-dose curcumin has neurogenic effects and that it may prevent age and neurodegenerative disease-related cognitive deficits.
대통령 정치이념에 따른 언론사의 정파성과 정부정책 보도 방향간의 관계 - 대통령 연설문과 언론 사설 분석을 중심으로 -

본 연구는 대통령의 연설문에 제시된 주요 정책의 정치이념을 파악하고, 이어 이들 정책에 대해 보수-진보 신문은 각각 어떤 정파적 프레임으로 보도하고 있는지 파악하기 위한 연구이다. 한국은 권위주의 정권이 종식된 이후 진보 대통령과 보수 대통령이 번갈아 집권하면서 민주적 정권 교체를 이루고 있지만, 그 때마다 극심한 이념 대립과 사회적 갈등으로 진통을 겪어왔다. 특히 이 과정에서 언론은 갈등을 중재하는 역할보다는 오히려 정파적 보도로 갈등을 키우고 있음을 부인할 수 없다. 본 연구는 보수 대통령과 진보 대통령의 정책이 실제로 얼마나 이념적으로 차이가 나는지 대통령 연설문 내용분석을 통해 객관적으로 파악했다. 이어 보수-진보 신문들은 대통령 정책에 대해 얼마나 정파성을 드러내는지 사설·논평에 대한 미디어 프레임 분석과 지배적 논조를 파악했다. 분석결과 보수대통령과 진보 대통령의 정책은 이념에서 상당한 차이가 있음이 드러났다. 보수대통령인 이명박 대통령과 박근혜 대통령은 시장경제에 입각한 친기업적 정책, 글로벌 경쟁력 강화 같은 보수적 이념과 가치를 강조했다. 진보대통령인 노무현 대통령과 문재인 대통령은 ‘평화’,‘참여’,‘균형’,‘복지’등의 진보적 이념과 지향성이 두드러졌다. 언론사 프레임과 논조 역시 보수신문-진보신문에 따라 상당한 차이가 있었다. 보수신문인 조선과 동아는 노무현 대통령에 대해 부정적 논조가 압도적으로 많았고, 이념-갈등 프레임을 제일 많이 적용했다. 진보신문인 한겨레와 경향은 이명박 대통령과 박근혜 대통령에 대해 부정적 논조가 매우 많았다. 보수-진보 정권 교체 때마다 벌어지는 한국 사회의 갈등 현상을 해소하기 위해서는 상대방의 정책을 객관적으로 파악하는 노력이 필요하다. 특히 언론은 갈등 증폭자가 아닌 갈등을 합리적으로 갈등을 조정하는 중재자로서의 역할을 위해 노력해야 한다. 그래야만 합리적 공론의 장이 활성화될 것이다. The purpose of this study is to explore the ideology of main policies suggested in the president"s speech and to understand the political frames of conservative-progressive newspapers. Even though Korea has achieved the democratic change of government by alternative seizure of power between conservative and progressive presidents after the cessation of authoritarian regime, there has been extreme ideological conflicts and social tensions. Moreover, the media has intensified the conflicts through politically biased articles rather than mediating the conflicts. This study objectively apprehends the extent of ideological differences on policies between conservative and progressive presidents. Subsequently, this study explore the media frame and dominant tone of press editorial in terms of how much the conservative and progressive newspapers show their political parallelism on the presidential policies. According to the analysis, it has shown that there are considerable differences in their ideologies between the policies of progressive and conservative presidents. Lee Myoung-Bak and Park Geun-Hye, the conservative presidents, had emphasized the conservative ideology and philosophy based on the market economy such as pro-business policy and reinforcement of global competitiveness. On the other hand, the progressive ideology such as ‘peace’, ‘participation’, ‘balance’, and ‘welfare’ are remarkable with Roh Moo-Hyun and Moon Jae-in, the progressive presidents. The media frame and the tone of editorial also had considerable differences depending on conservative - progressive newspapers. Conservative newspaper Chosun and Dong-Ah had predominantly negative editorials on the Roh Moo-Hyun and applied the ideology-conflict frame. Progressive newspaper Hangyeorye and Kyoung-Hyang had lots of negative editorials on Lee Myoung-Bak and Park Geun-Hye. In order to resolve the phenomenon of conflicts in Korean society that happens every time the government changes, much effort for understanding the policy of the opposites in unbiased view is needed. Especially the press should make an effort for the role as a mediator that rationally adjusts the conflicts, rather than amplifying the conflicts. Only then the rational field of public opinion will be vitalized.
