      • Application of The Value Analysis To Redesign Facility Layout

        This paper deals with an application of process value analysis method for a manufacturing process in order to redesign facility layout in a paper company. We have used the value analysis method which permits an overall and rigorous study of process by a functional approach. Firstly, customer's expectations for the future process are clearly and precisely expressed with specifications of the Functional Extern Analysis. The existing process is analyzed using various tool of the Functional Internal Analysis in the second part. From the results of these analysis, we find out that the main problems of current facility are due to scheduling and facility layout. This paper is devoted to resolve the second problem. We suggest an ideal solution in order to have a reference solution. Nextly, We give realistic choices and the final solution for the facility layout.

        Multiscale density estimation with errors in variables

        We present an adaptive method for density estimation when the observations X = (X1, . . . , Xn) are contaminated by additive errors Y = X + Z. The error distribution is not specified by the model but is estimated using repeated measurements (Yi)i=1,2,3of X. In this setting, we propose a wavelet method for density estimation which adapts both to the degree of ill posedness of the problem (smoothness of the error distribution)and to the regularity of the target density. Our method is implemented in the Fourier domain via a square-root transformation of the empirical characteristic function and yields fast translation invariant non-linear wavelet approximations with data-driven choices of fine tuning parameters. When the variable X is observed without errors our method provides a natural implementation of direct density estimation in the Meyer wavelet basis. We illustrate the adaptiveness properties of our estimator with a range of finite sample examples drawn from population with smooth and less smooth density functions.

        If one had to name one popular and prolific source of environment-themed movies, it could be Japanese animation studio Ghibli. Director Hayao Miyazaki's movies Nausicaä, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke are known for their environmentalist agenda, even if they contain traces of forced personification of the threat and a sentimental approach found in the mentioned western productions. While as concerned as his colleague Miyazaki about environmental issues, director Isao Takahata handles them in a more subdued manner in his movies, until bringing environmentalism to the forefront in 1994's excessive tragicomedy Pom Poko. To get a grasp of Takahata's idiosyncratic environmentalism, which is on full display in Pom Poko, one has to take a brief look at the remainder of his filmography, before diving into Pom Poko's story and themes themselves Pom Poko succeeds in creating a relatable and not too ham-fisted metaphor for the environmentalist cause. Director Takahata avoids excessive sentimentalities and abusing a straw man-type adversary as a cheap and easily disposable villain, which would do injustice to the complexity of the movie's environmental and social themes. It depicts a universal story in a strictly Japanese setting, about the fragile relation between humanity and nature as a cold war between two nations. The tanuki, as the voice of nature, can't find a way to reason with the humans. Since humans are blind to the harm their ambitions create and the loss of their own cultural heritage that vanishes along with it, the tanuki see themselves forced to resort to violence and coercion. This logic of war directs the story of the film and is told in the pace of a historical documentary, with elegant tone shifts from comedy to drama narrated by the tanuki themselves. To fully capture the symbolic weight of the tanuki, they are impressively animated in different styles, from realistic and detached to cartoonish and relatable. Their aloof personalities are not seen as hindrances in themselves, more like a key to their creativity and happiness. This doesn't, however, make them great warmongers. Before being able to deal with the humans at all, they would first have to make them realize that both of their realms are at odds in the first place. Humans are oblivious to the damage they're doing, so they are unable to understand the tanuki's often ridiculous attacks as a cry for help. Unfortunately, the movie offers no solution, no cure for the human's deafness; in the end, it is nature who has to take the high road and submit to humanity momentum. They also stand for the principles of humanity that modern societies seem to drown. It is the tanuki's ability to adapt and their sense of compassion that allows some of them to survive, by integrating human society – a thought that would have seemed ludicrous to them a couple of years ago. In the beginning, they believe that humans must be gods, considering their ability to form the land as they please. In the end, in a desperate outcry that illustrates the movie's central message of unity, tanuki Bunta claims that humans aren't allowed to transform the forest, only the tanuki can, concluding that the humans must be nothing more than especially selfish tanuki.

      • Fusion imaging using US and MRI: preliminary experience from the LUMIERE research platform

        Objective US and MRI are two validated techniques for fetal brain expertise, each presenting their own advantages. Fusion imaging (FI) might result in one final merged image with the exactness of both modalities. The objective was to evaluate the clinical use of the off-line US-MRI FI in the assessment of the fetal brain development. Material and Methods This was a prospective study in Necker Hospital (NCT04142606) conducted from January to May 2021. We included normal singleton pregnancies between 20 and 36 weeks. Each woman has had a volumic 3D US and a T2w MRI brain exam (1.5 T) on the same day. Then, we merged US and MRI images with the dedicated 4D View Fusion software (GE Healthcare) by using precise landmarks to optimize the registration process. We developed a standardized method to identify 29 brain structures previously defined to provide an acute expertise the fetal brain development in FI. Results More than 100 patients were included and we obtained workable US and MRI acquisitions in the orthogonal planes allowing for fusion imaging in the vast majority of cases. Overall, FI gave access to a larger amount of information to establish a complete fetal neurosonogram than each modality by itself. At late gestational age, the examination of the parenchyma became very difficult due to fetal position, shadow cones and skull ossification. US resolution highlighted some median brain structures such as basal ganglia, trigone, Sylvius aqueduct or cerebellar foliation; On the opposite on the same plane, MRI gave ac- cess to the full brain gyration, brain stem or peri-cerebellar spaces. Moreover, a 3D Doppler acquisition merged to an MRI could provide some vascular information, so far unattainable with fetal MRI. Conclusion We present a promising off-line US-MRI FI tool allowing to navigate within two merged volumes acquired during the same day. This tool could be of major interest for educational purpose, brain development assessment and in case of fetuses at high risk for brain damages such as CMV infection or TTTS.

        Numerical Investigations of a Single Stage Volute Pump in Viscous Operation

        CFD is used extensively to predict the performance of pumps and has proven to be a reliable tool for low viscosity fluids. Pump performance for high viscous operation is generally predicted from its water performance using empirical formulas, for example from the Hydraulic Institute standard ANSI/HI 9.6.7. However, the domain of application of these formulas is limited to certain pump sizes and configurations. The use of CFD as a tool for this task seems obvious, but not many studies on this topic have been presented so far. Several aspects of such a CFD calculation are not trivial, such as the effect of the viscous heating or the fact that the flow regime will not be fully turbulent in a large portion of the pump domain depending on the operating conditions and the viscosity. To provide some insight into the requirements for such CFD simulations, investigations of a single stage, double suction volute pump operating with water and oil were carried out and compared to measurement data covering a broad operating range. The results show that both the SST and intermittency turbulence models can predict the pump performance for high viscosity fluids well, despite local differences in flow regime prediction

        Dialoguer avec Pascal, dialoguer selon Pascal

        Que notre époque puisse encore dialoguer avec Pascal, une preuve suffisante en est le prestige dont continue à bénéficier l’auteur des Pensées. L’intérêt pour toute son œuvre ne se dément pas, malgré le passage des années et le changement des temps. D’où vient cette présence persistante ? Faut-il s’en étonner ? Pascal n’est pas à proprement parler une personnalité avenante. Il ne suscite pas (et ne souhaite d’ailleurs pas susciter) l’affection. Si l’admiration pour son génie s’est manifestée dès l’origine, on sent aussi chez ses contemporains – chez un Pierre Nicole par exemple – une certaine forme d’irritation devant l’évidence de sa supériorité. Plutôt que de s’enfoncer dans des considérations psychologiques oiseuses et toujours subjectives, l’hypothèse est ici faite que la puissance de Pascal, et sa permanence dans les esprits, tiennent pour une bonne part à sa conception du dialogue. On peut lire en effet dans les Pensées un idéal de l’échange, du débat, de la confrontation. Le choc des opinions, l’affrontement des convictions, y est mis en pratique, mais aussi théorisé. Pascal ne se contente pas de concevoir un discours apte à ébranler son interlocuteur et à dissiper ses préjugés sur la religion, il s’interroge encore sur les caractéristiques d’un échange intellectuel fécond, sur les qualités qu’il implique de la part de chacun des interlocuteurs. Le XVIIe siècle a élevé au plus haut rang la pratique de la conversation – cet art où brille souverainement l’honnête homme. Pascal hérite sans doute de toute cette réflexion et de cet idéal mondain. Mais son dessein dépasse de beaucoup l’agrément de la sociabilité. Ce géomètre, soucieux de convaincre et de persuader, a médité mieux que tout autre les conditions d’un authentique dialogue. Une telle science relève certes de la rhétorique, mais dans le cas de Pascal, elle s’élève à des considérations plus essentielles sur la capacité d’un homme à entrer en communication avec son semblable. Prise dans toute sa radicalité, la question est considérable. Dialoguer avec Pascal, c’est donc aussi dialoguer selon les principes de Pascal – des principes que l’on tente ici d’énumérer et de caractériser.
