Despite well established health benefits, today’s children do not eat enough vegetables. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between the number of unfamiliar foods in the vegetable food group and the preference for these foods and dietary factors. Subjects were 1,072 children in 5th and 6th grades from elementary schools located in 4 cities in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. A two-page questionnaire consisted of questions asking about the subjects’ preference and familiarity for 64 foods in the vegetable group, preferences for three fast foods, four types of vegetable dishes, and six tastes. Also included in the questionnaire were questions assessing subjects’ adherence to national dietary guidelines. The subjects were divided into quintiles according to the number of unfamiliar vegetables; the 1st quintile (N=226) was children who had less than 14 unfamiliar vegetables and the 5th quintile (N=229) was more than 29. Compared to the children in the other quintiles, the children in the 5th quintile had a significantly lower adherence to national dietary guidelines regarding consumptions of vegetable and protein sources, regular exercise, awareness of desirable height and weight, and reading food labels, as well as total (P<0.05). The preferences for bland tastes (P<0.05), salads (saengchae, P<0.01), stir-fried vegetables (P<0.01), and several vegetable items (P<0.05) were significantly lower in the 5th quintile compared to the other quintiles. This study proposes the potential benefits of teaching children names of a variety of vegetables to improve their dietary factors such as food preferences and dietary habits.

Functional Analysis of the Putative BuB2 Homologues of C. elegans in the Spindle Position Checkpoint

Spindle position checkpoint monitors the orientation of mitotic spindle for proper segregation of replicated chromosomes into mother cell and the daughter, and prohibits mitotic exit when mitotic spindle is misaligned. BUB2 forms one of the key upstream element of spindle position checkpoint in budding yeast, but its functional homologues have not been identified in higher eukaryotes. Here, we analyzed the functions of two putative BUB2 homologues of C. elegans in the spindle orientation checkpoint. From the C. elegans genome database, we found that two open reading frames (ORFs), F35H12_2 and C33F10_2, showed high sequence homology with BUB2. We obtained the expressed sequence tag (EST) clones for F35H12_2 (yk221d4) and C33F10_2 (yk14e10) and verified the full cDNA for each ORF by sequencing and 5' RACE with SL1 primer. The functional complementation assays of yk221d4 and yk14e10 in bub2 of S. cerevisiae revealed that these putative BUB2 homologues of C. elegans could not replace the function of BUB2 in spindle position checkpoint and mitotic exit. Our attempt to document the component of spindle position checkpoint in metazoans using sequence homology was not successful. This suggests that structural information about its components might be required to identify functional homologues of the spindle position checkpoint in higher eukaryotes.
Quantum Process Tomography with Arbitrary Number of Ancillary Qubits in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

We propose quantum process tomography (QPT) using an arbitrary number of ancillary qubitsas a compromise between the advantages of the original QPT and the QPT using ancilla not smaller than the system. For an n-qubit system with m(< n) qubit ancilla, the number of total qubits and the number of measurements are n + m and 22(n.m), respectively, compared to n and 2n in the former QPT and 2n and 1 in the latter QPT. As an example, QPT using a two-qubit operation with one ancillary qubit in nuclear magnetic resonance is studied. The initial states and the pulse sequences to produce them from the thermal equilibrium state are presented.
학업중단 청소년의 사회적 낙인감이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향 : 자아존중감과 자아탄력성의 매개효과를 중심으로

본 연구는 학업중단 청소년을 대상으로 사회적 낙인감이 스마트폰 중독에 어떠한 영향이 있는지, 그리고 자아존중감과 자아탄력성은 이들 간을 매개하는지 검증하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 한국청소년정책연구원에서 조사 배포한 학업중단 청소년 패널조사 5차년도 자료를 활용하였다. 자료분석은 SPSS를 이용하여 회귀분석을 수행하여 매개효과를 분석하고, sobel test를 수행하여 이를 추가적으로 검증하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 사회적 낙인감이 스마트폰 중독에 영향이 있는 것을 확인하였다. 둘째, 사회적 낙인감과 스마트폰 중독 간에 자아존중감은 이들 간을 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 사회적 낙인감과 스마트폰 중독 간에 자아탄력성은 이들 간을 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 토대로, 사회적 낙인감의 감소와 자아존중감·자아탄력성의 향상을 통해 학업중단 청소년의 스마트폰 중독을 감소시킬 수 있는 방안에 대한 논의와 함의들을 제시하였다. This study examined how social stigma affects smartphone addiction and whether self-esteem and self-resilience mediate between them. Data from the 5th year of the panel survey on students who dropped out of school, which was researched and distributed by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, were used. Regression analysis was performed using SPSS to analyze mediating effects, and the Sobel test was performed to further verify this. First, it was confirmed that social stigma had an effect on smartphone addiction. Second, self-esteem was found to mediate between social stigma and smartphone addiction. Third, ego resilience was found to mediate between social stigma and smartphone addiction. Based on the results, discussions and implications to reduce smartphone addiction among adolescents who dropped out of school by reducing social stigma and improving self-esteem and self-resilience were presented.

Chemically functionalized plant oils such as acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) and maleinized acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (MAESO) were used as new bio-based binders for TiO₂ electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). More porous networks and larger porosities were fabricated on the TiO₂ films using plant oil binders due to the larger number of functionalities, in comparison with the film using polyethylene glycol (PEG). The charge-transfer resistance in the TiO₂ films was considerably shrunk due to the reduced impurity states. The short circuit photocurrent (Isc) and the open circuit photovoltage (Voc) of the cell using plant oil binders increased and the conversion efficiency improved significantly.
