Queueing analysis, in general., has the intrinsic problem of large state space dimension and complex computation. In fact, the petri net is a graphical and mathematical model. It has been used for the modeling of various applications, in particular, manufacturing systems. It can deal with parallelism, concurrence, deadlock avoidance, and asynchronism. Currently it has been applied to the performance of computer networks and protocol verifications. This paper presents a technique for modeling and analyzing queueing model using stochastic activity networks (SANs). And then some examples are showed for the verification of the technique presented in this paper.

We report a case of tenosynovial giant cell tumor with severe bone erosion in the right fifth finger of a 46-year-old man. Throughout this case review, we describe the imaging findings of tenosynovial giant cell tumor with severe bone erosion and review the literatures regarding osseous lesions caused by tenosynovial giant cell tumor and their significance related to the differential diagnosis and patient treatment.

The spine is the most common location for skeletal metastases, and the incidence of spinal metastasis shows an increasing tendency. Because metastatic spinal tumors progress from an anterior element to a posterior element resulting in continuing destruction of the pedicles, epidural extension and involvement of neural structures of the metastatic tumor are eventually visible. Therefore, it is clinically significant for radiologists to understand the pathophysiology of spinal metastasis and to assess the involvement of neural structures and the disintegration of spinal instability related to the pathophysiology. As MRI is also the best imaging modality for diagnosing spinal metastasis, radiologists should accurately assess spinal metastasis and provide practical information to physicians. Therefore, we will describe some analysis points focusing on the understanding of pathophysiology of spinal metastasis and the next step toward a more extensive clinical approach using MR imaging.

<P>Chronic exposure to arsenic is well known as the cause of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. To investigate the effect of arsenic on blood vessels, we examined whether arsenic affected the contraction of aortic rings in an isolated organ bath system. Treatment with arsenite, a trivalent inorganic species, increased vasoconstriction induced by phenylephrine or serotonin in a concentration-dependent manner. Among the arsenic species tested—arsenite, pentavalent inorganic species (arsenate), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA<SUP>V</SUP>), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA<SUP>V</SUP>)—arsenite was the most potent. Similar effects were also observed in aortic rings without endothelium, suggesting that vascular smooth muscle plays a key role in enhancing vasoconstriction induced by arsenite. This hypercontraction by arsenite was well correlated with the extent of myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation stimulated by phenylephrine. Direct Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> measurement using fura-2 dye in aortic strips revealed that arsenite enhanced vasoconstriction induced by high K<SUP>+</SUP> without concomitant increase in intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> elevation, suggesting that, rather than direct Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> elevation, Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> sensitization may be a major contributor to the enhanced vasoconstriction by arsenite. Consistent with these <I>in vitro</I> results, 2-hr pretreatment of 1.0 mg/kg intravenous arsenite augmented phenylephrine-induced blood pressure increase in conscious rats. All these results suggest that arsenite increases agonist-induced vasoconstriction mediated by MLC phosphorylation in smooth muscles and that calcium sensitization is one of the key mechanisms for the hypercontraction induced by arsenite in blood vessels.</P>

This study presents a case of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in a 58-year-old man showing unusual manifestations mimicking chronic osteomyelitis. In this case review, we describe the imaging findings of DLBCL which mimics chronic osteomyelitis and review existing reports regarding the differential diagnosis of bone involvement of lymphoma and osteomyelitis through imaging and laboratory findings and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) such as the advanced MRI sequence.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the T2 value of the articular cartilage of the glenohumeral joint in rotator cuff disease displayed on 3.0T MRI and to apply it in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: This study involved sixty-two patients who underwent shoulder MRI containing T2 mapping. The mean T2 value was measured by placing a free hand ROI over the glenoid or humeral cartilage from the bone-cartilage interface to the articular surface on three consecutive, oblique coronal images. The drawn ROI was subsequently divided into superior and inferior segments. The assessed mean T2 values of the articular cartilage of the glenohumeral joint were compared and evaluated based on the degree of rotator cuff tear, the degree of fatty atrophy of the rotator cuff, and the acromiohumeral distance. Results: ICC values between two readers indicated moderate or good reproducibility. The mean T2 value for the articular cartilage of the glenoid and humeral head cartilage failed to show any significant difference based on the degree of rotator cuff tear. However, the mean T2 values of articular cartilage, based on fatty atrophy, tended to be higher in fatty atrophy 3 or fatty atrophy 4 groups while some subregions displayed significantly higher mean T2 values. There was no correlation between the acromiohumeral distance and the mean T2 values of the articular cartilage of the glenoid and humeral head. Conclusion: T2 mapping of the glenohumeral joint failed to show any significant difference in quantitative analysis of the degenerative change of the articular cartilage based on the degree of rotator cuff tear. However, it also offers quantitative information on the degenerative change of cartilage of the glenohumeral joint in patients with rotator cuff tear and severe fatty atrophy of the rotator cuff.

A genetic etiology of male infertility is identified in fewer than 25% of infertile men, while 30% of infertile men lack a clear etiology, resulting in a diagnosis of idiopathic male infertility. Advances in reproductive genetics have provided insights into the mechanisms of male infertility, and a characterization of the genetic basis of male infertility may have broad implications for understanding the causes of infertility and determining the prognosis, optimal treatment, and management of couples. In a substantial proportion of patients with azoospermia, known genetic factors contribute to male infertility. Additionally, the number of identified genetic anomalies in other etiologies of male infertility is growing through advances in whole-genome amplification and next-generation sequencing. In this review, we present an up-to-date overview of the indications for appropriate genetic tests, summarize the characteristics of chromosomal and genetic diseases, and discuss the treatment of couples with genetic infertility by microdissection-testicular sperm extraction, personalized hormone therapy, and in vitro fertilization with pre-implantation genetic testing.

Perilla is an oilseed crop cultivated in Korea since ancient times. Due to the high α-linolenic acid content in perilla, perilla seed oil can easily become rancid. α-Linolenic acid is synthesized by two enzymes, endoplasmic reticulum-localized Δ15 desaturase (FAD3) and chloroplast-localized Δ15 desaturase (FAD7) in vivo. In order to lower the α-linolenic acid content of the seed oil without disturbing plant growth, we tried to suppress the expression of only the FAD3 gene using RNA interference, whilst maintaining the expression of the FAD7 gene. Seventeen transgenic plants with herbicide (Basta TM ) resistance were obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using hypocotyls of perilla plants. The transgenic plants were firstly confirmed by treatment with 0.3% (v/v) Basta TM herbicide, and the expression of FAD3 was measured by Northern blot analysis. The α-linolenic acid content was 10-20%, 30-40%, and 60% in two, seven, and three of the twelve T1 transgenic perilla plants which had enough seeds to be analyzed for fatty acid composition, respectively. Analysis of the fatty acid composition of T2 progeny seeds from T1 plants with the lowest α-linolenic acid content showed that the homozygous lines had 6-10% α-linolenic acid content and the heterozygous lines had 20-26% α-linolenic acid content. It is expected that the reduction in α-linolenic acid content in perilla seed oil will prevent rancidity and can be utilized for the production of high-value functional ingredients such as high γ-linolenic acid.
