Purpose:

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in biological fluids are potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and assessment of urological diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa). The aim of the study was to identify and validate urinary cell-free miRNAs that can segregate patients with PCa from those with BPH.

Methods:

In total, 1,052 urine, 150 serum, and 150 prostate tissue samples from patients with PCa or BPH were used in the study. A urine-based miRNA microarray analysis suggested the presence of differentially expressed urinary miRNAs in patients with PCa, and these were further validated in three independent PCa cohorts, using a quantitative reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction analysis.

Results:

The expression levels of hsa-miR-615-3p, hsv1-miR-H18, hsv2-miR-H9-5p, and hsa-miR-4316 were significantly higher in urine samples of patients with PCa than in those of BPH controls. In particular, herpes simplex virus (hsv)-derived hsv1-miR-H18 and hsv2-miR-H9-5p showed better diagnostic performance than did the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test for patients in the PSA gray zone. Furthermore, a combination of urinary hsv2-miR-H9-5p with serum PSA showed high sensitivity and specificity, providing a potential clinical benefit by reducing unnecessary biopsies.

Conclusions:

Our findings showed that hsv-encoded hsv1-miR-H18 and hsv2-miR-H9-5p are significantly associated with PCa and can facilitate early diagnosis of PCa for patients within the serum PSA gray zone.

Tumor therapy using the high-energy radiation has evolved over the decades as typical non-invasive treatment method due to its advantage compared with surgery. But, the radiotherapy can damage or destroy normal cells as well as destroying tumor cells and cause side effects of treatment. Even though most side effects are temporary, these effects can be extremely fatal for patient. Therefore, the exact measurement of the exposure dose of patient during radiation therapy is very important for patient safety. In the case of the conventional fiber-optic radiation sensor that consists of a scintillator for high-energy radiation dosimetry, additional correction is necessary due to the quenching effects of the scintillator. In this study, we measured the exposure dose of the high-energy proton beam without the scintillator by using the Cerenkov radiation that generated inside the plastic optical fiber. As a result of this study, we confirmed a Bragg peak of the proton beam without a scintillator. Also it was in good agreement with the result of the ionization chamber.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection induces an acute hepatitis or a subclinical disease in humans. It is known that HEV is a zoonotic agent and pigs are major reservoirs of HEV. This study was conducted to determine the fecal shedding rates of HEV in various age groups of pigs and identify the genotypes of swine HEV prevailing in Korea. A total of 565 fecal samples were collected from suckling piglets, post-weaning pigs, growing pigs, and sows at 12 swine farms. RT-PCR was used to detect the presence of swine HEV in the feces. Every swine farm examined in this study had HEV-infected pigs. The fecal shedding rates of the swine HEV at individual farms were in the range of 2.1-35.4%. The overall fecal shedding rate of HEV in individual pigs was 17.5%. The HEV shedding rates of suckling piglets, post-weaning pigs, growing pigs and sows in their feces were 6.3, 16.3, 38.0 and 9.3%, respectively. When the genotypes of swine HEVs identified in this study were determined, they were all grouped into genotype 3. They were further subdivided into subtype 3a together with human and swine HEVs isolated in the U.S.A.

A Case of Immunoglobulin G4-Related Disease Presenting as a Pleural Mass
Kim, Dong Hyun,Koh, Kyu Han,Oh, Hyeon Sik,Kim, Se Joong,Kang, Sae Han,Jung, Byung Wook,Song, Jun Gyu,Cheon, Mi Ju,Yoon, Seon Bin,Park, Yong Won,Ko, Young Min,Lee, Seung Hyeun The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2014 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.76 No.1
Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is a newly recognized condition characterized by fibroinflammatory lesions with dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, storiform-type fibrosis and obliterative phlebitis. The pathogenesis is not fully understood but multiple immune-mediated mechanisms are believed to contribute. This rare disease can involve various organs and pleural involvement is even rarer. We report a case of IgG4-related disease involving pleura. A 66-year-old man presented with cough and sputum production for a week. Chest radiography revealed consolidation and a pleural mass at right hemithorax. Treatment with antibiotics resolved the consolidation and respiratory symptoms disappeared, but the pleural mass was unchanged. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed. Histopathology revealed dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltration and storiform fibrosis with numerous IgG4-bearing plasma cells. The serum IgG4 level was also elevated. Further examination ruled out the involvement of any other organ. The patient was discharged without further treatment and there is no evidence of recurrence to date.

2,5-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and polycondensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel T-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which constituted parts of the polymer backbones. Polymers 4-6 are soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. They showed thermal stability up to 260 oC in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperatures obtained from differential scanning calorimetry in the range 90-95 oC. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients (d33) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around 1.42 ´ 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to 5 oC higher than glass-transition temperature (Tg), and there was no SHG decay below 100 oC due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.
