        관동대진재와 한국문학

        관동대진재는 일본뿐만 아니라 당시의 조선에도 모든 사회분야에 걸쳐 심각한 충격과 파장을 남겼다. 특히 그때 자행된 조선인학살사건은 지금도 진상규명과 책임추궁이 제대로 이루어지지 못한 미해결상태에 있다. 관동대진재와 조선인학살사건의 경과와 실태는 당시 통치권력의 검열로 인해 자료의 제약이 많다. 그래서 시대가 바뀐 뒤에 회고록 방식으로 이루어진 증언들을 검토하여 그 의의와 한계를 살펴보고, 그 대안이 문학적 글쓰기 형식임을 밝혔다. 다음으로 관동대진재를 직접 현장에서 경험한 문인들을 신문보도, 문인사전이나 전기자료, 본인과 지인의 술회 등 여러 가지 자료들을 통해 확정하고, 그들이 처했던 정황에 대해서도 구체적으로 파악해서 제시하고자 했다. 당시 통치권력의 감시와 탄압 때문에 이를테면 관동대진재 문학으로 꼽을 만한 작품의 수효가 많지 않은 가운데 그래도 다수를 점한 것이 시 장르인데, 이상화의 〈독백〉이나 김소월의 〈車와 船〉은 대화체 발화법을 채택함으로써 그 파멸적 사건의 문학적 형상화에 성공적인 경지를 보였다. 한편 이기영은 대하장편 〈두만강〉에서 관동대진재를 식민지민족해방운동사의 거대한 화폭 속에 그렸으나, 체제 이념의 개입이 과도한 탓으로 일찍이 수필에 유려하게 그려 보였던 절망과 공포의 체험을 실감나게 재현하지는 못하고 말았다. Kanto-great earthquake disaster gave a severe shock and influence over all the social area in not only Japan and but also Korea. Especially the korean massacre incidents remains unsettled in according to the fact-finding and the responsibility of the result. The process and the reality of Kanto-great earthquake disaster and korean massacre incidents were restricted in the data by the censorship of the government power at that time. So, after examining the written testimonies of the memoir form after japanese imperialism fall to find out the significance and the limit, I proved literary writing as the alternative form. Next I decided upon the authors that had experienced the disaster on the scene immediately on the basis of the newspaper report, the dictionary of the authors, biographical data, reminiscence of the author, his family and friends etc. And I tried to present the state of things in the incident that was grasped concretely. Owing to the surveillance and suppression of the government power at that time, so to say, the majority among several works of Kanto-great earthquake disaster literature belongs to the poetic genre. Yi, Sang-wha's 〈Monologue〉 or Kim. So-wal's 〈Car and Ship〉 showed the successful state in literary figuration of the ruinous incidents by adopting the dialogue style narration. Meanwhile Yi, Ki-young, in his roman-fleuve 〈Tuman River〉, described the Kanto-great earthquake disaster in a huge scale of the history of national liberation movement, but due to the excessive intervention of the ideology of DPRK, he couldn't represent his personal experience that he, in that scene, had got the sensation of horror and desperation, refinedly being depicted in his miscellany before.

      • Assessments of Kitaev physics in 3d transition metal magnets via first-principles calculations

        Since the first suggested realization of Kitaev’s exchange Hamiltonian in layered 5d-transition metal oxide systems by G. Jackeli and G. Khaliullin, 4d- and 5d-transition metal elements have been considered “a must” ingredient to conjure Kitaev physics in solid state systems. In search of other candidate systems, recently there have been several studies on reducing the need of the spin-orbit-entangled jeff=1/2 orbitals as the basic building block. There have been generally two different approaches in that direction; i) employing S=1 or S=3/2 higher-spin elements or ii) many-body J=1/2 states. Both approaches involve in the presence of 3d transition metal elements despite their apparently weak spin-orbit coupling. In this talk I’d like to review both approaches, make assessments on candidate systems for each cases via first-principles electronic structure calculations, and try to suggest a couple of ways to enhance Kitaev physics in the relevant systems.

        Spin-Orbit-Entangled Nature of Magnetic Moments and Kitaev Magnetism in Layered Halides α-RuX₃ (X = Cl, Br, I)

        Recently, α-RuCl₃ has been extensively studied because of potential bond-dependent Kitaev magnetic exchange interactions and the resulting quantum spin liquid phase that can be realized therein. The covalency between Ru 4d- and Cl p-orbitals is crucial for inducing large Kitaev interactions in this compound, therefore replacing Cl with heavier halogen elements such as Br or I appears to be a promising method for further promoting the Kitaev interaction. There have been several reports on synthesis of α-RuBr₃ and α-RuI₃, which are expected to host the same spin-orbit-entangled orbitals and Kitaev exchange interactions with α-RuCl₃. This study investigated electronic structures of α-RuCl₃, α-RuBr₃, and α-RuI₃ via comparisons, focusing on the cooperation of the spin-orbit coupling and on-site Coulomb repulsions to realize the spin-orbit-entangled pseudospin-1/2 at Ru sites. In addition, magnetic exchange interactions of all three compounds were estimated, thereby demonstrating that α-RuBr₃ can be promising candidates for realizing Kitaev spin liquid phases in solid-state systems.

      • Topological quantum phase transitions driven by external electric fields in Sb2Te3 thin films.

        <P>Using first-principles calculations, we show that topological quantum phase transitions are driven by external electric fields in thin films of Sb(2)Te(3). The film, as the applied electric field normal to its surface increases, is transformed from a normal insulator to a topological insulator or vice versa depending on the film thickness. We identify the band topology by directly calculating the Z(2) invariant from electronic wave functions. The dispersion of edge states is also found to be consistent with the bulk band topology in view of the bulk-boundary correspondence. We present possible applications of the topological phase transition as an on/off switch of the topologically protected edge states in nano-scale devices.</P>

        The Effect of Parental Imprinting on the INS - IGF2 Locus of Korean Type I Diabetic Patients

        N/A Background: Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is caused by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells. Susceptibility to IDDM appears to depend on more than one genetic locus. Evidence of a genetic linkage for IDDM2 was found in male meioses from French and North American populations. It is linked to maternal imprinting (i.e. monoalleleic expression of the insulin gene) that is considered the most likely cause of these gender-related differences. IGF2 is expressed only in the paternal allele and therefore, is considered a candidate gene for IDDM2 transmission because of its important autocrine/paracrine effects on the thymus, lymphocytes and pancreas. Nevertheless, it remains controversial whether the parental origin of IDDM2 influences IDDM susceptibility. Methods: Using PCR and semi-quantitative RT-PCR, we analyzed the INS/PstI+1127 and IGF2/ApaIpolymorphisms and RNA expression level between PstI (+/-) and PstI (+/+) to determine genotype and allele-specific expression of the INS and IGF2 genes. Results : INS/PstI(+/+) and IGF2/ApaI(+/-) were observed in 36 (97.3%) of 37 IDDM patients and in 29 (72.5%) of 40 IDDM patients, respectively. The presence of both IGF2 alleles in RNA was observed in 21 (91.6%) of 24 IDDM patients. Our results show a 3-fold increase in RNA expression from PstI (+/-) allele over PstI (+/+) allele. Conclusion: Our conclusion does not entirely exclude IGF2 as the gene involved in IDDM2, even though the parental effect of IDDM2 transmission is not related to IGF2 maternal imprinting. The INS genotype appeared mostly in the PstI (+/+) homozygote and, therefore, we could not explain the INS imprinting pattern in Korean type 1 diabetic patients. Genetic differences between populations may account for the discrepancy between Korean type I diabetic patients and American or French type I diabetic patients.

        Estimating Determinants of Japanese Tourist Arrivals for Korea

        본 연구에서는 여러 계량경제 수요모형 중에서 general to specific approach가 의해 한국에서의 일본인 관광객 수요매개변수를 측정하고 분석할 수 있는 가장 적절하고 실제적인 모형인 것으로 분석되었다. 즉, 주요 통계치는 유사한, 본 모형이 기타 Partial adjustment mode보다 표준오차가 더 작았고, NT test와 mis-specification test 관점에서 더 우수한 결과를 도출하였다. 또한, AIC와 SBIC를 기초로 한 model selection criteria의 결과도 non-nested test 결과와 일치하는 것으로 나타나 모형이 더 선호되는 것으로 나타났다. 추정된 일본인 관광객수의 교통비 및 소득탄력성은 경제이론에 부합하고 이전의 연구결과와 일치하는 것으로 나타났다. 소득변수가 1보다 커 수요에 탄력적이면서 수용에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 환율요소를 고려한 관광가격탄력성은 물가요소에 의한 음(-)의 영향보다 환율요소에 의한 양(+)의 영향이 더 커서 1보다 큰 양(+)의 탄력치를 나타내, 일본인은 한국을 동남아시아 국가보다는 업그레이드된 관광목적지로 인식하고 있는 것으로 추정되었다. 또한, 추정된 장기 교통비 탄력성이 단기탄력성보다 더 작은 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 교통비 이외의 변수들(소득, 관광가격지수 등)의 ADF 2차 차분이 non-stationary 했지만, 표본수의 제약과 degree of freedom과 추정치의 신뢰성을 저하시키지 않기 위해 DF tests의 2차 차분에 의존하여 general to specific 모형에 의해 수용의 결정인자를 추정하였다. Among econometric models of tourism demand, this study utilizes that a single equation multivariate time series model in the form of double-log linear model to explain and forecast tourist arrivals to Korea from Japan. As the most relevant and practical model in estimating a parameter of Japanese tourists to Korea, we develop our multiple regression model by using a diluted version of the general to specific approach due to a small sample size. To select our optimal model, we first conduct a variable deletion test, and then the standard non-nested hypothesis tests. Finally, our alternative dynamic specification is subjected to both the Dickey-Fuller and Augmented Dickey-Fuller(ADF) tests. The model is used to quantify to changes in relative tourism prices, real income, relative transport costs, and external events. The results indicate that as estimated income, transport costs and price elasticities of Japanese tourists are consistent with the economic theory and comparable to previous empirical studies for other countries. The model offers valuable insights into the stylized facts of tourism behaviour and provides reliable out-of-sample forecasts.
