This paper is a study on the life and clinical reasoning of Kim Goo Young (1958-2014). Offering a new perspective through his interpretation of Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑), Kim introduced his unique theory of Korean medicine, ‘The Theory of Byeongin (病因論)’. Kim recognized the confusing situation of communication between people studying Korean medicine and tried to make a new standard based on the principle that many people can share. ‘The Theory of Byeongin offers a newly constituted Donguibogam focusing on ‘Byeongin’ (病因, pathologic origin) which can be translated as the cause of a disease. In so doing Kim recognized ‘Byeongin as the most important factor in ‘Byeonjeung’ (辨證, classifying the origin), or the classification method of symptoms. In addition, Kim recognized how ‘Byeongin was considered to be a diseased lifestyle, and tried interpreting. The patient’s lifestyle to treat diseases. As a result, ‘The Theory of Byeongin’ is a theory consisting of an intuitive structure, reducing notable elements like Yin Yang Five Movement theory. The theory s significant characteristic is its easy application in clinical settings due the established core principles which are based on Kim’s insight and clinical experience. This study contributes to the understanding of the theoretical and clinical development of Korean medicine through deeper studies on ‘The Theory of Byeongin and Kim s medical theory.

<P>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the regenerative effects of a tetracycline blended polylactic and polyglycolic acid (TC-PLGA) and non-blended polylactic and polyglycolic acid (PLGA) barrier membrane on one-wall intrabony defects in beagle dogs. It can be concluded that when used for guided tissue regeneration TC-PLGA membranes show a beneficial effect on one-wall intrabony defects in beagle dogs.</P>

<P>Dehiscence bone defects, frequently observed on dental implants placed in periodontitis-affected alveolar bone or extraction sockets were treated with β-tricalcium phosphate (β -TCP) and chitosan membrane for guided bone regeneration, and the new bone formation on the treated sites were studied. Beagle dogs were used for the experiment. First to fourth mandibular premolars were extracted, and the post extraction alveolar bone surface was planed. After 8 weeks of healing, 3 by 4mm dehiscence defects were created using straight fissure burs. Total of 16 oxidized titanium surface implants were placed on the bone defects of the subjects, two on each side. Control sites were treated with implants only. Experimental Group 1 sites were treated with implants and chitosan membrane. Experimental Group 2 sites were treated with implants, β-TCP and chitosan membrane. Experimental Group 3 sites were treated with implants, β-TCP, autogenous bone and chitosan membrane. The animals were sacrificed 12 weeks after implant placement, and the specimens from the treated sites were histologically studied with following results. Limited amount of new bone formation was observed in control group with unexposed membrane. Slightly greater amount of bone formation was observed on sites treated with β-TCP+membrane or autogenous bone+ β-TCP+membrane compared to control group. Remnants of chitosan membrane and β-TCP encapsulated with connective tissue were observed during experimental periods. These results suggest that further studies are needed on membrane rigidity and infection control for space maintenance underneath the membrane and bone substitutes in the treatment of dehiscence defects.</P>
Mouthguard use in Korean Taekwondo athletes - awareness and attitude

PURPOSE A survey was performed to identify the level of mouthguard use, awareness, wearability issues and attitude toward mouthguard among elite Korean Taewondo athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Survey questionnaires were given to 152 athletes participating in the Korea National Taekwondo team selection event for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. Questionnaires consisted of three sections, mouthguard awareness, reasons for not wearing mouthguard and the last section to test the level of acceptance on current mouthguard and when the identified problems were resolved. For analyzing difference among response, χ2 test was used and significant level (α) was set up as 0.05. RESULTS Responses in each of items showed significant difference (P<.001). Majority of response regarding each question: Majority of respondents believed that mouthguard were effective in preventing injuries (36.4%) but the result suggested that the provision of information on mouthguard to athletes was inadequate (44.0%) and the result showed that respondents were not greatly interested or concerned in relation to the mandatory mouthguard rule (31.6%). Although the responses on the level of comfort and wearability of mouthguard were negative (34.8%), athletes were positively willing to wear mouthguard if the problems rectified (51.2%). CONCLUSION Considering the high level of willingness to wear mouthguard if the problems rectified, it is thought that together with efforts in providing more mouthguard information, the work of sports dentistry to research and improve mouthguard will be invaluable in promoting mouthguard to more athletes.
Efficiency Prediction of Worm Gear with Plastic Worm Wheel

This study proposes a method to predict the efficiency of a worm gear with a plastic worm wheel. The theoretical efficiency is obtained from friction coefficient experiments and mathematical calculations. A tribometer is used to measure the friction coefficient of nylon6 on steel at various normal pressures. Gear geometry is employed to calculate the position of the contact point and the curvature at the contact point, and Hertz' Law is employed to calculate the contact area. In order to verify the efficiency prediction method, the efficiency of a worm gear which is used in an EPS system is theoretically calculated by the method, and then, the result is compared with the measured efficiency of the worm gear. With consideration of all factors, the theoretical efficiency was very accurate, showing the same efficiency trend with the increase of output torque and little difference among the values. Their maximum values were obtained at the same output torque. This efficiency prediction method can be applied to various types of gears with plastic materials.
