<P>Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is a tumor suppressor that inhibits PI3K/Akt signaling. To examine the effect of PTEN on breast cancer cell proliferation, we expressed PTEN in MDA-MB-468 cells (MDA-MB-468 PTEN) by retroviral infection and tested the cell proliferation rate. We found that the growth rate of MDA-MB-468 PTEN cells was significantly lower than that of MDA-MB-468 control vector cells (MDA-MB-468 vec). When the PI3K/Akt signaling inhibitor LY294002 and the MEK/Erk signaling inhibitor U0126 were applied, LY294002 reduced cell proliferation in MDA-MB-468 PTEN and MDA-MB-468 vec by 20%, while U0126 led to a >60% reduction in MDA-MB-468 PTEN and a 20% reduction in MDA-MB-468 vec cells. FACS analysis demonstrated that the subG0/G1 apoptotic fraction was significantly increased in MDA-MB-468 PTEN cells after U0126 treatment, while LY294002 treatment in both cell lines and U0126 treatment in MDA-MB-468 vec cells led to a modest increase in the apoptotic fraction. This phenomenon was accompanied by the down-regulation of p-Erk. p-Erk levels were significantly lower after U0126 treatment in MDA-MB-468 PTEN cells. Similar results were observed in MDA-MB-231 cells, which express endogenous PTEN. The growth of MDA-MB-231 cells was significantly inhibited after U0126 treatment, compared to LY294002, while PTEN-null ZR-75-1 cells did not show increased sensitivity to U0126 over LY294002. Taken together, these findings suggest that blockade of PI3K/Akt signaling by PTEN may render breast cancer cells more dependent on the MEK/Erk pathway for their proliferation and survival.</P>
Value of spray-dried plasma as a supplement to swine diets

One of the most powerful health management practices is the use of antibiotics, but their use is being restricted because of health safety issues. The swine industry has been looking for various alternatives to antibiotics and increasingly considers the use of dietary factors like feed ingredients, feed additives, feed formulation practices, or feeding methods, instead of using antibiotics to improve pig health and performance. Among other alternatives to antibiotics, spray-dried plasma may be a candidate. Spray-dried plasma is a blood product that provides bioavailable nutrients and physiologically active components such as immunoglobulins, glycoproteins, growth factors, peptides, etc. It is an excellent protein source with balanced and highly digestible amino acids. Several beneficial physiological activities depend on components of spray-dried plasma, such as immune competence (antibacterial activity), modulation of microbiota and/or immune system, integrity of intestinal barrier function, etc. These beneficial effects can contribute to improvement of pig performance and health by modulation of microbiota in the digestive tract and/or immune system. Therefore, it is suggested that spray-dried plasma has great potential as an antibiotics alternative.

The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a standardized music aptitude test, for measuring musical potential and ability of korean children. As a part of procedure, this thesis developed test items, field tested the developed items in Seoul area, and has secured relevant statistical results for the developed test items. More specifically, this study conducted the followings: 1) review of literature and related studies have conducted, 2) based on the findings, five elements of music-rhythm, pitch, timbre, tempo, and dynamics are chosen as components of the music aptitude test, 3) one hundred and five test items (21 test items for each element) have developed by the researchers. The developed 105 test items were field tested twice and a reliability, validity, and causal effects factors are examined by using relevant statistical techniques. As the result, 12 test items of rhythm element, 15 test items of pitch element, 13 test items of timbre element, 10 test items of tempo element, and 13 test items of dynamics element are selected as valid test items. Although, the unselected test items could be used to measure the related musical ability, in order to ensure the effectiveness of the test, they are eliminated from the test items. Thus, it could be concluded that finally selected test items are highly reliable and valid (Cronbach s α= .8851) to measure the ability of the related musical elements. It is highly recommended to develope web-based music aptitude test for continuing research and test item analysis. Based on the constructed web-based data base, a continuing test item development for securing a higher reliability and validity should be conducted. The researchers also believe that through the continuing study of predictive and authentic validity test, the standardization of this test could be obtained more accurate calibration.

The main purpose of this study is to understand the music of the North Korea. It has been more than 58 years since the Korean peninsular has divided into two countries by the force of foreign countries. Currently, an ardent wish for reunification is growing in every corner of the South Korea. Thus, it is necessary for music educators to prepare basis for the musical reunification. Since the South and the North Korea have set apart for more than 58 years, there are many dissimilarities and heterogeneities such as language, tradition, way of living, political identity, economic status, culture and musical culture. It is the responsibilities of music educators to prepare ways of building musically reunified country. As a first step of the stated necessity, this thesis has tried to answer the following research questions: 1) what is underlying philosophy of North Korean music? 2) what kinds of music exists in the DPRK? 3) what is the predominant formal structure of music of the DPRK? 4) what kinds of music are taught in the North Korean school music class room? 5) what consists the content of school music text book of the DPRK? In order to answer the stated research questions, Theories on Music as an Art written by Jung-Il Kim, current political and military leader of the DPRK, and music text books of the North Korea were thoroughly investigated and analyzed. The following is the findings of this study. First, though the North Korea follows the category of referentialism, the Juche (self identity) is the main philosophical basis of the North Korean music and music education practice. Second, there are mainly three kinds of music exists in North Korea, and those are vocal music based on strophic form, pure instrumental music, and instrumental-vocal mixed music. Under these three categories, vocal music is very strong and well-developed. Third, the kinds of songs in practice are revolutionary song, hymn of phrase for general Kim, Jung-Il, and past Kim, Il-Sung, lyrical songs, songs for work, march song, and folk songs. Fourth, the predominant formal structure of the North Korea s musical practice is based on jul-ga form which is similar to strophic form. Fifth, In the North Korean music class, songs mentioned in the number 3 are mainly taught. In North Korea, music is not simply for an art s sake but for the political propaganda s sake. Thus, function of music is very important in the north Korea. Music without a referential function is useless in the DPRK. Other hand, in the south Korea, pure music for music sake philosophy is predominant. Considering these discrepancies, the researcher has drawn eight recommendations for understanding the music of the North Korea at the end of the study.

This study focuses on developing diagnostic compositions, kits, and information provision methods for identifying species-specific genes in domestically residing Reticulitermes speratus and Reticulitermes kanmonensis, as well as the recently introduced Cryptotermes domesticus. The core innovation of this invention lies in the utilization of species-specific genetic markers to facilitate rapid and accurate species identification using a PCR (polymerase chain reaction)-based diagnostic technique. This approach enables swift identification of termites at quarantine stages, contributing to efficient management of imported goods and minimizing ecological and economic damages caused by termites. Through genome analysis of termites, this research has identified candidate species-specific genetic markers, developed diagnostic compositions and kits based on these markers, and proposed a rapid diagnostic method capable of determining termite species within a day, optimally within three hours. This invention provides a groundbreaking tool for termite management and research, significantly contributing to pest control and biodiversity conservation efforts.

<P>A wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT) probe was developed that adapts a diagonal-scanning scheme for three-dimensional (3D) in vivo imaging of the human tympanic membrane. The probe consists of a relay lens to enhance the lateral scanning range up to 7 mm. Motion artifacts that occur with the use of handheld probes were found to be decreased owing to the diagonal-scanning pattern, which crosses the center of the sample to facilitate entire 3D scans. 3D images could be constructed from a small number of two-dimensional OCT images acquired using the diagonal-scanning technique. To demonstrate the usefulness and performance of the developed system with the handheld probe, in vivo tympanic membranes of humans and animals were imaged in real time.
