Electroluminescence from n-Zn(Mg,Cd)O/ p-4H-SiC:Al Heterojunctions

Electroluminescence (EL) from n-Mg0:18Zn0:82O/ n-Zn(Mg,Cd)O/ p-4H-SiC:Al heterojunction diodes fabricated by using remote-plasma-enhanced metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition was measured to investigate some recombination processes of hole injection by changing the bandgap of n-Zn(Mg,Cd)O. EL emissions from the heterojunction utilizing n-Zn1-xCdxO (x > 0.07) were observed to coincide with the photoluminescence (PL) emission energy of the corresponding alloy content due to hole injection from the p-4H-SiC:Al to the n-Zn1-xCdxO layer in the type-I het-erojunctions. However, broad EL emissions from the type-II heterojunctions utilizing n-ZnO and n-Mg0:12Zn0:88O were observed at around 2.8 eV. These broad ELs were caused by the recombination of carriers in p-4H-SiC:Al due to electron injection from n-Zn(Mg,Cd)O to p-4H-SiC:Al and by the recombination of spatially separated carriers at the heterointerface.

α-Synuclein oligomers and Ca 2+ dyshomeostasishave been thoroughly investigated with respect to the pathogenesisof Lewy body disease (LBD). In LBD, α-synucleinoligomers exhibit a neuron-specifi c cytoplasmic distribution. Highly active neurons and neurons with a high Ca 2+ burdenare prone to damage in LBD. The neuronal vulnerabilitymay be determined by transneuronal axonal transmission ofthe pathological processes; however, this hypothesis seemsinconsistent with pathological fi ndings that neurons anatomicallyconnected to LBD-vulnerable neurons, such asneurons in the ventral tegmentum, are spared in LBD. Thisreview focuses on and discusses the crucial roles played byα-synuclein oligomers and Ca 2+ dyshomeostasis in earlyintraneural pathophysiology in LBD-vulnerable neurons. Achallenging view is proposed on the synergy between retrogradetransport of α-synuclein and vesicular Ca release,whereby neuronal vulnerability is propagated backwardalong repeatedly activated signaling pathway.

In this paper, we demonstrate an autonomous design of motion control of virtual creatures (called animated robots in this paper) and develop modeling software for animated robots. An animated robot can behave autonomously by using its own sensors and controllers on three-dimensional physically modeled environment. The developed software can enable us to execute the simulation of animated robots on physical environment at any time during the modeling process. In order to simulate more realistic world, an approximate fluid environment model with low computational costs is presented. It is shown that a combinatorial use of neural network implementation for controllers and the genetic algorithm (GA) or the particle swarm optimization (PSO) is effective for emerging more realistic autonomous behaviours of animated robots.
Characteristics of Sagittal Spino-Pelvic Alignment in Japanese Young Adults

Study Design: Radiological analysis of normal patterns of sagittal alignment of the spine. Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of normal sagittal spino-pelvic alignment in Asian people. Overview of Literature: It is known that there are differences in these parameters based on age, gender, and race. In order to properly plan for surgical correction of the spine for Asian patients, it is necessary to understand the normal spino-pelvic alignment parameters for this population. Methods: This study analyzed 86 Japanese healthy young adult volunteers (48 men and 38 women; age 35.9±11.1 (mean±standard deviation [SD]). The following parameters were measured on lateral standing radiographs of the entire spine: sagittal vertical axis (SVA), horizontal distance between the C7 plumb line and the posterior superior corner of the superior margin of S1, thoracic kyphotic angle (TK), lumbar lordotic angle (LLA), sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), and pelvic incidence (PI). Results: The values (mean±SD) of SVA, TK, LLA, SS, PT, and PI were 8.45±25.7 mm, 27.5±9.6°, 43.4±14.6°, 34.6±7.8°, 13.2±8.2°, and 46.7±8.9°, respectively. The Japanese young adults evaluated in this study tended to have a smaller PI, LLA, TK, and SVA than most Caucasian people. Regarding gender differences, SVA was significantly longer and TK was significantly smaller in men; however, there was no statistically significant difference in LLA, SS, PA, and PI. Conclusions: Japanese young adults apparently have smaller PI and LLA values than Caucasian people. When making decisions for optimal sagittal spinal alignment, racial differences should be considered.

Study Design: Normal cervical sagittal length patterns were measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of sagittal length patterns between the cervical cord and the cervical canal in flexion-extension kinematics. Overview of Literature: Cervical dynamic factors sometimes cause a cervical spondylotic myelopathy in elderly subjects and an overstretching myelopathy in juvenile subjects. Previous studies showed the length changing of the cervical cord in flexion and extension. However, there is no detailed literature about the relationship between cervical vertebral motion and cord distortion yet. Methods: Sixty-two normal subjects (28 male and 34 female, 42.1±8.5 years old) without neck motion disturbances and abnormalities on cervical X-ray and MRI were enrolled in this study. Results: The cervical cord length was significantly longer in flexion and significantly shorter in extension in all cervical cord sagittal lines. The cervical canal length pattern was also the same as the cervical cord. The elongation of the cervical cord and canal was the largest at the site of the posterior cervical canal and the shortest at the anterior canal site. The positions of the cerebellar tonsils were verified at each neck position. Conclusions: The posterior elements of the cervical canal were most affected by neck motion. Movement directions of the upper cervical cord were verified among the various neck positions.
Purification, characterization and gene cloning of metalloprotease from Nomuraea atypicola

We have purified and characterized of metalloprotease metalloprotease from Nomuraea atypicola. N. atypicola was cultured in Sabouraud medium supplemented with powdered pupae. The metalloprotease from culture supernatant was purified to electrophoretically homogeneous state. The molecular mass of metalloprotease from N. atypicola was 50 kDa. The enzyme was most active at pH 8.5 and 40oC and stable at pH 5.0-7.0 and up to 40oC. The activity was inhibited by o-phenanthroline and EDTA. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the enzyme showed a similarity to those of proteases (Metallo peptidase M36 family (Fungalysin)) from Coccidioides posadasii and Aspergillus fumigatus. The enzyme was found to be Fungalysin-like metalloprotease. cDNA encoding metalloprotease from N. atypicola was amplified by PCR using oligonucleotides deduced from the N-terminal endo peptide sequence, 5’- and 3’-RACE. Predicted enzyme structure consists of 637 amino acids with pro- and signal sequences. The mature enzyme had 391 amino acids and its deduced amino acid sequence coincided completely with the N- terminal amino end (20 amino acids) of metalloprotease purified from N. atypicola. We are studying on expression of the metalloprotease gene in Escherichia coli.
