      • Hybrid Magnetic Bearing Regulation via Super Twisting Control

        A homopolar permanent magnet-biased magnetic bearing is a suitable solution to reduce power losses in active magnetic bearing systems. This configuration is complex due to the coupling between the coil-created magnetic fluxes and permanent magnet fluxes, besides being inherently a nonlinear, unstable, and multivariable system. One of the most recent topics in variable structure theory is represented by the higher order sliding modes (HOSM). In this paper, we propose the application of super twisting controller (STC) for the double loop robust stabilization of a rigid rotor horizontally supported by radial hybrid magnetic bearings. The efficiency of the applied controller is demonstrated via simulations in the presence of harmonic disturbances like vibration forces.

        Silver Nanoparticles Effect on Antimicrobial and Antifungal Activity of New Heterocycles

        In this study 1-[4-(2-methoxy benzyl)-6-aryl-pyridazin-3(2H)-ylidene] hydrazines were used for the synthesis of new heterocyclic systems such as thiazolidine, phthalazine, pyrazolo, tetrazolo, hydrazide and new pyridazine derivatives to explore the effect of silver nanoparticles on their biological activity efficiency. Structures of the new heterocycles were characterized by the aid of several analytical techniques including; $^1H$-NMR, FTIR and mass spectra. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple methodology and the formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV studies. Most of the new prepared heterocycles were evaluated in vitro as new antimicrobial agents. Combination effects of the silver nanoparticles on the antimicrobial activity of the new heterocycles were investigated using the disk diffusion method. Compound 10a exhibited the strongest enhancing effect of silver nanoparticles solution against Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans.

        Micro-grid Monitoring and Supervision: Web-based SCADA Approach

        Owing to the widespread use of the micro-grid concept to serve many real life applications, the main concern of this paper is to monitor, evaluate and manage the operational performance of an existent, already installed micro-grid that consists of On & Off grid PV systems in addition to the main grid supply. With the aid of customized web based SCADA system fully designed by authors, the performance evaluation of the proposed micro-grid is carried out in terms of energy consumption, power quality indices and energy cost based on Egypt’s energy current tariff . The designed system helps in both micro-grid status monitoring as well as load sharing between the main grid supply and the off grid PV energy system. The data of the on grid PV energy system are accessed and collected online directly from the inverter web server instead of downloading them offl ine from the PV inverter. In this case, data are analyzed with a reasonable refresh rate, which saves time and eff ort. Remote access platform is developed securely through a multi-level security authentication and strong data encryption using the OpenVPN protocol under the Dynamic Domain Name System service. Smart wired and wireless technology—used as integrated sensing devices to the developed SCADA system—enables easy system installation and running cost saving. Finally, to validate the collected data from the newly SCADA designed monitoring system, a performance characterization for the on grid PV system following international standards of yields calculations is carried out for 3 months in 2019.

      • Assessment of the Prognostic Value of Methylation Status and Expression Levels of FHIT, GSTP1 and p16 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Egyptian Patients

        Background: Methylation of tumor suppressor genes has been investigated in all kinds of cancer. Tumor specific epigenetic alterations can be used as a molecular markers of malignancy, which can lead to better diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between gene hypermethylation and expression of fragile histidine triad (FHIT), glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) and p16 genes and various clinicopathologic characteristics in primary non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: The study included 28 primary non-small cell lung carcinomas, where an additional 28 tissue samples taken from apparently normal safety margin surrounding the tumors served as controls. Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) was performed to analyze the methylation status of FHIT, GSTP1 and p16 while their mRNA expression levels were measured using a real-time PCR assay with SYBR Green I. Results: The methylation frequencies of the genes tested in NSCLC specimens were 53.6% for FHIT, 25% for GSTP1, and 0% for p16, and the risk of FHIT hypermethylation increased among patients with NSCLC by 2.88, while the risk of GSTP1 hypermethylation increased by 2.33. Hypermethylation of FHIT gene showed a highly significant correlation with pathologic stage (p<0.01) and a significant correlation with smoking habit and FHIT mRNA expression level (p<0.05). In contrast, no correlation was observed between the methylation of GSTP1 or p16 and smoking habit or any other parameter investigated (p>0.05). Conclusions: Results of the present study suggest that methylation of FHIT is a useful biomarker of biologically aggressive disease in patients with NSCLC. FHIT methylation may play a role in lung cancer later metastatic stages while GSTP1 methylation may rather play a role in the early pathogenesis.

        Contact osteogenesis by biodegradable 3D-printed poly(lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate)

        Background: To support bone regeneration, 3D-printed templates function as temporary guides. The preferred materials are synthetic polymers, due to their ease of processing and biological inertness. Poly(lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) (PLATMC) has good biological compatibility and currently used in soft tissue regeneration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteoconductivity of 3D-printed PLATMC templates for bone tissue engineering, in comparison with the widely used 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) templates. Methods: The printability and physical properties of 3D-printed templates were assessed, including wettability, tensile properties and the degradation profile. Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were used to evaluate osteoconductivity and extracellular matrix secretion in vitro. In addition, 3D-printed templates were implanted in subcutaneous and calvarial bone defect models in rabbits. Results: Compared to PCL, PLATMC exhibited greater wettability, strength, degradation, and promoted osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs, with superior osteoconductivity. However, the higher ALP activity disclosed by PCL group at 7 and 21 days did not dictate better osteoconductivity. This was confirmed in vivo in the calvarial defect model, where PCL disclosed distant osteogenesis, while PLATMC disclosed greater areas of new bone and obvious contact osteogenesis on surface. Conclusions: This study shows for the first time the contact osteogenesis formed on a degradable synthetic copolymer. 3D-printed PLATMC templates disclosed unique contact osteogenesis and significant higher amount of new bone regeneration, thus could be used to advantage in bone tissue engineering.

        Reduced Fertility and Fecundity among Patients with Bipolar I Disorder and Schizophrenia in Egypt

        Objective To evaluate reproduction among patients with bipolar I disorder (BP1) or schizophrenia (SZ) in Egypt. Methods BP1 patients (n=113) were compared with community based, demographically balanced controls (n=124) and SZ patients (n=79, DSM-IV). All participants were evaluated using structured interviews and corroborative data were obtained from relatives. Standard indices of procreation were included in multivariate analyses that incorporated key demographic variables. Results Control individuals were significantly more likely to have children than BP1 or SZ patients (controls 46.8%, BP1 15.9%, SZ 17.7%), but the BP1-SZ differences were non-significant. The average number of children for BP1 patients (0.37±0.9) and SZ patients (0.38±0.9) was significantly lower than for controls (1.04±1.48) (BP1 vs controls, p<0.001; SZ vs controls, p<0.001). The frequency of marriages among BP1 patients was nominally higher than the SZ group, but was significantly lower than controls (BP1: 31.9% SZ: 27.8% control: 57.3%). Even among married individuals, BP1 (but not SZ) patients were childless more often than controls (p=0.001). The marital fertility, i.e., the average number of children among patients with conjugal relationships for controls (1.8±1.57) was significantly higher than BP1 patients (1.14±1.31, p=0.02), but not significantly different from SZ patients (1.36±1.32, p=0.2). Conclusion Selected reproductive measures are significantly and substantially reduced among Egyptian BP1 patients. The reproductive indices are similar among BP1 and SZ patients, suggesting a role for general illness related variables. Regardless of the cause/s, the impairment constitutes important, under-investigated disability.       • Anticancer and Radiosensitization Efficacy of Nanocomposite Withania somnifera Extract in Mice Bearing Tumor Cells

        The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anticancer and radio-sensitizing efficacy of a Withania somnifera extract/Gadolinium III oxide nanocomposite (WSGNC) in mice. WSGNC was injected to solid Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice via i.p. (227 mg/kg body weight) 3 times/week during 3 weeks. Irradiation was performed by whole body fractionated exposure to 6Gy, applied in 3 doses of 2 Gy/week over 3 weeks. Biochemical analyses as well as DNA fragmentation were performed. Treatment of solid Ehrlich carcinoma bearing mice with WSGNC combined with ${\gamma}$-radiation led to a significant decrease in the tumor size and weight associated with a significant decrease in mitochondrial enzyme activities, GSH content and SOD activity as well as a significant increase in caspase-3 activity, MDA concentration and DNA fragmentation in cancer tissues. Combined treatment of WSGNC and low dose of ${\gamma}$-radiation showed great amelioration in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status (GSH content and SOD activity) in liver tissues in animals bearing tumors. It is concluded that WSGNC can be considered as a radio-sensitizer and anticancer modulator, suggesting a possible role in reducing the radiation exposure dose during radiotherapy.
