EFFECTS OF HEAT EXPOSURE ON WATER METABOLISM AND PASSAGE IN SHEEP
Katoh, K.,Buranakarl, C.,Matsunaga, N.,Lee, S.R.,Sugawara, T.,Sasaki, Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1989 Animal Bioscience Vol.2 No.2
The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of heat exposure on water metabolism and the passage of indigestible particles in sheep. Water intake, respiratory rate, rectal temperature and pH of ruminal fluid and urine were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the hot environment ($32\;^{\circ}C$) than in the control environment ($20\;^{\circ}C$). Urine osmolality and blood volume were increased, while glomerular filtration rate was decreased, in the hot environment. The liquid flow rate from reticulo-rumen and the excretion of indigestible particles of specific gravity 0.99 (but not 1.27 or 1.38) were increased in the hot environment. From these findings, it is suggested that an increased water intake evoked by heat exposure might affect the flow rate of digesta in sheep.

Negative feedback on GH responses to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and GH-releasing peptides (GHRPs) has been reported and this action has been suggested to act through an increase in somatostatin. To determine whether the acute administration of porcine GH (pGH) inhibits GH responsiveness to GHRP-2 and GHRH in swine, swine were intravenously administered with pGH (5${\mu}g$/kg BW) or placebo followed 180 min later by a second intravenous administration of saline, GHRP-2 (30 ${\mu}g$/kg BW), GHRH (1${\mu}g$/kg BW) and a combination of GHRP-2 and GHRH. Plasma GH concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. Administration of pGH caused a significant increase in GH area under curve and GH peak concentrations (p<0.001) over placebo-treated group. Plasma GH concentrations peaked at 15 min and returned to baseline level within 90 min. Pretreatment of pGH abolished (p<0.01) GH response to GHRH and attenuated (p<0.05) GH response to GHRP-2 and GHRH combined, without affecting GH response to GHRP-2. These results demonstrate that negative feedback action on GH releasing effect of GHRH occurs in swine, and that GHRP-2 has ability to interact in this action.

For the purpose of transport simulation, low temperature plasmas having similar dimensionless parameters to those of high temperature plasmas are produced by 2.45 GHz microwaves up to and 30 kW at low toroidal field (Bt < 0.1 T) in the Compact Helical System (CHS). In the configuration where the fundamental electron cyclotron resonance layer is placed near the last closed flux surface, electron density exceeds the ordinary (O)-mode cutoff density by a factor of 2 . 3 in hydrogen plasmas. The deposition of microwave power occurs in the interior region beyond the (O)-mode and extraordinary (X)-mode cutoff layers through which electron cyclotron waves (ECW) cannot penetrate. This suggests that a mode conversion of ECW to electron Bernstein wave (B-mode) would occur. Moreover, superimposition of ECW power was performed on target over-dense plasmas which have a steep density gradient at the upper hybrid resonance layer. In this condition, the mode conversion efficiency of superimposed ECW power was theoretically estimated to be about 50 . 60 %. The absorption rate of superimposed ECW power reached up to about 30 %.

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is a huge protein complex embedded in the nuclear envelope. It has central functions in nucleocytoplasmic transport, nuclear framework, and gene regulation. Nucleoporin 107 kDa (NUP107) is a component of the NPC central scaffold and is an essential protein in all eukaryotic cells. Here, we report on biallelic NUP107 mutations in nine affected individuals who are from five unrelated families and show early-onset steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). These individuals have pathologically focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition that leads to end-stage renal disease with high frequency. NUP107 is ubiquitously expressed, including in glomerular podocytes. Three of four NUP107 mutations detected in the affected individuals hamper NUP107 binding to NUP133 (nucleoporin 133 kDa) and NUP107 incorporation into NPCs in vitro. Zebrafish with nup107 knockdown generated by morpholino oligonucleotides displayed hypoplastic glomerulus structures and abnormal podocyte foot processes, thereby mimicking the pathological changes seen in the kidneys of the SRNS individuals with NUP107 mutations. Considering the unique properties of the podocyte (highly differentiated foot-process architecture and slit membrane and the inability to regenerate), we propose a ''podocyte-injury model'' as the pathomechanism for SRNS due to biallelic NUP107 mutations.
