To achieve permanent disposal of radioactive waste drums, the radionuclides analysis process is essential. A variety of waste types are generated through the operation of nuclear facilities, with dry active waste (DAW) being the most abundant. To perform radionuclides analysis, sample pretreatment technology is required to transform solid samples into solutions. In this study, we developed a dry ashing-microwave digestion method and secured the reliability of the analysis results through a validity evaluation. Additionally, we conducted a comparative analysis of the radioactivity of 94Nb nuclides with and without the chemical separation process, which reduced the minimum detectable activity (MDA) level by more than 65-fold for a certain sample.
Substance P improves MSC-mediated RPE regeneration by modulating PDGF-BB

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Stem cells have regenerative potentials that can be used for the treatment of critical and incurable diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and diabetic retinopathy are one of the most severe retinal disorders, which are mostly attributed to impairment of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). Thus, restoration of RPE is the main therapeutic approach to prevent the development of ocular diseases, such as ARMD. In this study, we have investigated the role of substance P (SP) on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-mediated RPE regeneration in vitro. The MSCs were primed with SP followed by the addition of conditioned medium (MSC<SUP>SP−CM</SUP>) to RPE. The effects of MSC<SUP>SP−CM</SUP> on RPE activity was evaluated by assessing viability, proliferation rate, and migration of RPE. Ex vivo long-term culture led to altered cellular characteristics of MSCs by weakening cell viability, cytokine secretion, and differentiation potential. The conditioned medium of early passage MSC (E-MSC<SUP>CM</SUP>) enhanced the RPE viability and migration, whereas the late passage MSC (L-MSC<SUP>CM</SUP>) hardly influenced the RPE activity. SP priming, however, facilitated the inductive effects of MSC, and SP effect was more distinct in the late passage than in the early passage. Moreover, it was revealed that SP could exert its effects by modulating PDGF-BB secretion in the MSCs.</P> <P>Taken together, these results suggested that SP could restore the therapeutic effects of MSCs on retinal diseases by elevating their proliferative and paracrine activities through PDGF-PDGFR signaling in ex vivo culture.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> BMSC enhances RPE activity by paracrine factors. </LI> <LI> Paracrine potential of BMSC decreases as passage number increases. </LI> <LI> SP elevates cytokine secretion in BMSC. </LI> <LI> SP enhances MSC-mediated RPE regeneration. </LI> </UL> </P>
A Novel COL4A1 Mutation in a Neonate with Intrauterine Intraventricular Hemorrhage and Porencephaly

Collagen type IV alpha 1 (COL4A1) plays an important role in construction of the basement membranes of all human tissues, especially vessels. Mutations in COL4A1 lead to various multisystemic dysfunctions, including hereditary porencephaly, hemorrhagic stroke, hemiplegia, cerebral small vessel disease, and nephropathy. In this study, we describe a neonatal case featuring a novel de novo COL4A1 mutation, manifesting as fetal intraventricular hemorrhage and porencephaly. This patient is one of the youngest to have been diagnosed with the most severe phenotype. Our experience may assist clinicians in the diagnosis and management of this extremely rare genetic condition.
Assessment of Multi-Elements Analysis Ability Using ICP-OES

We conducted multi-elements determination of reference material certified by the Inorganic Ventures, IV-26, using iCAP 7400 ICP-OES of Thermo Fisher Scientific. And we statistically evaluated analysis results by introducing the in-house proficiency evaluation method implemented at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Ca, Co, Fe, Mg, Ni, and V were selected as target elements, and extended uncertainty was estimated at a confidence level of about 95% and coverage factor k = 2. Five parameters incurred at manufacturing process (standard solution, calibration curve, repeated measurement and dilution factor of the test sample) were considered when determining the uncertainty. En-score can be calculated using the formula En=(x-X)/(Ulab 2+Uref 2)1/2 described in KS Q ISO 13528, where x, Ulab, X, and Uref are the test results, the uncertainty of the result, and the certified value and the uncertainty of the value. And if the absolute value |En| is less than 1, it can be evaluated as a satisfied value. As a result of ICP-OES analysis, each concentration of the elements to be measured was almost similar to the certified concentration of the reference material, and the uncertainty was slightly different. Also since evaluation on multi-elements determination had an En-score within 1, it was confirmed that the analysis results satisfied En evaluation.
Progressive Diaphragmatic Hernia due to Aging

Hiatal hernia is acondition in which the stomach and rarely, part of the colon protrudes into the thorax through an opening in the diaphragm. It can happen as a result of aging, secondary to the progression of kyphosis. It is usually asymptomatic, but patients may have symptoms such as heartburn, early satiety or chest pain. In the case of massive hernia, bowel incarceration or obstruction can occur. If so, bowel ischemia, necrosis and even perforation can develop, and it is important to repair these hernias surgically in advance. A 73 year-old woman visited our hospital for polypectomy. A 1.0 cm sized sessile polyp was detected and colonoscopic polypectomy was performed. But the histologic examination revealed that polyp was adenocarcinoma with submucosal invasion, so laparoscopic segmentectomy was planned. During staging work-up, a huge diaphragmatic hernia with herniation of the whole stomach and transverse colon was detected, and we decided to do diaphragmatic repair during co-operation. When we reviewed her medical history, the chest X-ray taken in 2002 showed no abnormal findings other than cardiomegaly. In 2009, she was admitted to the hospital due to gastric ulcer bleeding, and she complained of atypical chest pain which worsened after meals. The chest X-ray showed a retro-cardiac opacity with an air-fluid level, which suggested a hiatal hernia. In 2012, she was admitted again for the same reason. The retrocardiac opacity showed an interval increase in size on the chest X-ray, which indicated progression of the hernia. The patient underwent Nissen’s fundoplication and primary diaphragmatic repair with segmental resection of sigmoid colon in April, 2015. The follow up chest X-ray showed absence of the retro-cardiac air bubble seen on previous X rays. The patient was discharged with no complications and has no evidence of recur for three months.

A large portion of the Korean population has been exposed to toxic humidifier disinfectants (HDs), and considering that the majority of the victims are infants, the magnitude of the damage is expected to be considerably larger than what has currently been revealed. The current victims are voicing problems caused by various diseases, including but not limited to lung, upper respiratory tract, cardiovascular, kidney, musculoskeletal, eye, and skin diseases, etc. However, there has been difficulty in gaining validation for these health problems and identifying causal relationships due to lack of evidence proving that toxic HD is the specific causes of extrapulmonary diseases such as allergic rhinitis. Furthermore, the victims and bereaved families of the HD case have not received any support for psychological distress such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, feelings of injustice, and anger caused by the trauma. In addition, because the underlying mechanisms of the toxic materials within the HDs such as polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate, poly(oxyalkylene guanidine) hydrochloride, chloromethylisothiazolinone /methylisothiazolinone have yet to be determined, the demand for information regarding the HD issue is growing. The victims of the HD cases require support that goes beyond financial aid for medical costs and living expenses. There is a desperate need for government-led integrated support centers that provide individualized support through health screenings; in other words, we need an integrated facility that provides the appropriate social support to allow the victims to recover their physical and mental health, so as to well prepare them to return to a normal life. The implementation of such a plan requires not only the close cooperation between those departments already directly involved such as the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, but also active support on a national scale from pan-governmental consultative bodies.
