        Education is the process of acquiring or transferring knowledge from our existing body of tyeory and experience. The educational process must provide the Civil Engineers with ability to comprehend and adapt to the continuing changes in the practice of their profession. During the past several years, many practice-oriented educational programs and researchoriented programs have developed for students, but most of them are related to the improvement of curriculum. This paper deals exclusively with the spot-practice of civil engineering students. As the results of an analysis for the spot-practice, it is realized that the past spot-practice was somewhat isolated from outside environment and found too rigid to meet the changing requirements. The improvement of the spot-practice for civil engineering students is strongly recommended to produce qualified teachers, taking into account the changing social demands.

        Korea enters a new era of industrial modernization, spurred by her successive five-year economic development plans. The labor-intensive light industry that led the nation's economy in the past decades is undergoing a gradual shift to the technology-intensive heavy and chemical industry. The demand for industry-minded young technician is thereby ever mounting in number in various industrial sectors, which in turn creates many challenging issues on Civil Engineering Education. Among them, this paper deals exclusively with the curriculum of the Department of Civil Engineering Education. As the results of a trade analysis for graduates from technical high schools, it was realized that current curriculum were somewhat isolated from outside environment and found too rigid to meet the changing requirements. Needless to mention, teachers play a vital roles in the technician education. Accordingly the teacher must be qualified well not only in knowledge on the major subjects but also in practices. The improvement of current curriculum is strongly recommended to produce qualified teachers, taking into account the changing social demands. This study is very limited in terms of finance, time allowance and manpower. Accordingly the model curriculum was based on the trade analysis, social requirements and the current curriculum, and its justification was not verified by tests and broad reviews.

        한랭노출과 고혈압의 연관성

        Objectives : This study was carried out to suggest preventive methods for hypertension in cold-exposed workers. Methods : In 11 refs·iteration industries, 68 workers working in refrigerated areas more than one time per day were selected as the exposed group, and 68 workers not exposed to cold were selected as the control group. We interviewed the subjects with a questionnaire covering occupational history, and conducted clinical and laboratory tests including measurements of blood pressure and core temperature. Results : The systolic blood pressure in the exposed group(130.0±13.3 mmHg) was significantly higher than that recorded In the control group(118.3±12.1 mmHg), as was the diastolic blood pressure in the exposed group(82.7±8.5 mmHg) versus the control group(77.4±8.7 mmHg). The core temperature in the exposed group(36.1±0.7℃) was significantly lower than that experienced in the control group (36.4±0.5℃). In logistic regression analysis, age, cold exposure severity and milk intake were significant variables, with odds ratios of 5.204(95 % CI 1.440∼18.812), 2.674(95 % CI 1.080∼6.618), and 0.364(95 % Cl 0.141∼0.942) , respectively. Conclusions : Our study suggests that cold-exposed workers have higher a higher risk of hypertension, and that their core temperature is lower. Risk factors affecting hyper-tension of cold-exposed workers include age, cold exposure severity and milk intake. For the prevention of hypertension, cold-exposed workers should minimize cold-exposure time as much as possible.

      • HBV : PO-05 ; Efficacy of telbivudine in treatment-naive patients with hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis

        Background: There is little clinical information on the effect of telbivudine (LdT) therapy on viral suppression and hepatic function on hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients with cirrhosis. The present retrospective study assessed the antiviral efficacy of LdT therapy for HBV-related cirrhosis. Methods: We consecutively enrolled 35 patients with HBVrelated cirrhosis primarily treated with LdT 600 mg once daily for > 6 months at Korea University College of Medicine between March 2010 and October 2011. The degree of HBV DNA reduction, HBV DNA negativity, ALT normalization, HBeAg seroconversion, and the change of Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score were analyzed. Results: The baseline mean serum HBV DNA level was 5.21 ± 1.70 log10 IU/ml. The mean reductions in serum HBV DNA levels from baseline to 3 and 6 months were -3.37 ± 1.47, and -3.76 ± 1.67 log10 IU/ml, respectively (all p < 0.05). The proportion of patients with serum HBV DNA negativity (HBV DNA of < 20 IU/ml) and HBeAg seroconversion at 6 months were 51.4% (18/33) and 8.6% (1/32) at 6 months. For all patients, the mean albumin (3.8 vs. 4.0 g/dl) and CTP score (6.0 vs. 5.3) improved after 6 months of LdT treatment than baseline (all p < 0.05). The MELD score numerically decreased without statistical significance (9.5 vs. 8.8, p = 0.104). Although baseline serum HBV DNA and HBeAg status were significant factors in univariate analysis, HBeAg status was only independent factor for predicting HBV DNA negativity at 6 months in multivariate analysis (p = 0.004, OR = 36.4, 95% CI: 3.2-411.2). Conclusions: LdT can effectively inhibit the replication of HBV and improve underlying liver function in patients with cirrhosis resulting from CHB. A more extended prospective study is needed to assess the effect of long-term treatment with this drug.

        Case Report : Severe ischemic bowel necrosis caused by terlipressin during treatment of hepatorenal syndrome

        Terlipressin is a vasopressin analogue that is widely used in the treatment of hepatorenal syndrome or variceal bleeding. Because it acts mainly on splanchnic vessels, terlipressin has a lower incidence of severe ischemic complications than does vasopressin. However, it can still lead to serious complications such as myocardial infarction, skin necrosis, or bowel ischemia. Herein we report a case of severe ischemic bowel necrosis in a 46-year-old cirrhotic patient treated with terlipressin. Although the patient received bowel resection, death occurred due to ongoing hypotension and metabolic acidosis. Attention should be paid to patients complaining of abdominal pain during treatment with terlipressin.

        Gut bacteria-derived 3-phenylpropionylglycine mitigates adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells by inhibiting adiponectin-PPAR pathway

        Background Gut microbiota provide numerous types of metabolites that humans cannot produce and have a huge influence on the host metabolism. Accordingly, gut bacteria-derived metabolites can be employed as a resource to develop anti-obesity and metabolism-modulating drugs. Objective This study aimed to examine the anti-adipogenic effect of 3-phenylpropionylglycine (PPG), which is a glycine conjugate of bacteria-derived 3-phenylpropionic acid (PPA). Methods The effect of PPG on preadipocyte-to-adipocyte differentiation was evaluated in 3T3-L1 differentiation models and the degree of the differentiation was estimated by Oil red O staining. The molecular mechanisms of the PPG effect were investigated with transcriptome analyses using RNA-sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR. Results PPG suppressed lipid droplet accumulation during the adipogenic differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells, which is attributed to down-regulation of lipogenic genes such as acetyl CoA carboxylase 1 (Acc1) and fatty acid synthase (Fasn). However, other chemicals with chemical structures similar to PPG, including cinnamoylglycine and hippuric acid, had little effect on the lipid accumulation of 3T3-L1 cells. In transcriptomic analysis, PPG suppressed the expression of adipogenesis and metabolism-related gene sets, which is highly associated with downregulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway. Protein-protein association network analysis suggested adiponectin as a hub gene in the network of genes that were differentially expressed genes in response to PPG treatment. Conclusion PPG inhibits preadipocyte-to-adipocyte differentiation by suppressing the adiponectin-PPAR pathway. These data provide a potential candidate from bacteria-derived metabolites with anti-adipogenic effects.

        크릴(Euphausia superba) 육을 이용한 인스턴트 죽의 품질특성 평가

        Instant krill gruel was produced using peeled Antarctic krill Euphausia superba as a high nutritional ingredient and the food quality was investigated. The food quality of krill gruel was examined by measuring proximate composition, cholesterol, calorie, Hunter color value, total amino acids, fatty acids, fluoride, viscoelastic properties, and by sensory evaluation. The krill gruel had a moisture content of 87% and a pH of 6.65. The krill gruel contained 51 kcal/100 g, and 0.1% fat and 3.5 mg/100 g cholesterol. Its fatty acid composition exhibited high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. The levels of oleic acid and linolenic acid were high, and n-3, n-6, and n-9 fatty acid contents ranged from 1% to 6%. The total amino acid content was 2132 mg/100 g, and the levels of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, leucine, alanine, and arginine were particularly high. Essential amino acids accounted for over 30% of the total amino acids. Fluoride level in the krill gruel was 3.07 mg/kg. The viscoelastic properties of the krill gruel were determined as 6.28 Pa at shear stress of 2.51 Pa. In the recovery test, the elastic restoring force after deformation was low.
