Background: Various types of miniplates have been developed and used for the reduction of facial bone fractures. We introduced Yang's Keyhole (YK) plate, and reported on its short-term stability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of the YK plate, as a follow-up study, by examining the patients who had used the YK plate among the patients with the reduction of mandible fractures and who visited for plate removal. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 16 patients who underwent mandibular fracture fixation using a YK plate (group I) and 17 patients who underwent mandibular fracture fixation using a conventional plate (group II). Assessment was then made on malunion, occlusal stability, discomfort during the application, and clinical symptoms. Results: From January 2015 to December 2017, a total of 36 patients underwent mandibular fracture surgery using a YK plate. A total of 16 patients received plate removal. Among them, 15 were male and 1 female. The average age was 26 years. The applied surgical sites were the 12 on mandibular angle, 4 on mandibular symphysis, and 2 on subcondyle. The application period of YK plate was an average of 335 days. During the same period, 45 people underwent surgery on the conventional plate. A total of 17 patients received plate removal. Among them, 15 were male and 2 females. The average age was 36 years. The applied surgical sites were the 8 on mandibular angle, 4 on mandibular symphysis, and 2 on subcondyle. The application period of the conventional plate was an average of 349 days. No malocclusion occurred at the time of removal, and occlusion was stable. No patient complained of joint disease or discomfort. Conclusion: The YK plate system, in which the screw was first inserted and the plate was applied, for clinical convenience did not cause any particular problem and no significant difference from the conventional plate.

The operation of vending machine system presents a decision-making problem which consists of determining the product allocation to vending-machine storage compartments, replenishment intervals of vending machines, and vehicle routes, all of which have critical effects on system profit. Especially, it becomes more difficult to determine the operation variables optimally when demand for a product that is out-of-stock spills over to another product or is lost. In this paper, we propose a heuristic for solving the operation problem of the vending machine system and evaluate it by comparing with Yang’s algorithm on various test problems with respect to system profit via a computer simulation. The results of computational experiments show a substantial profit increase of the proposed heuristic over Yang’s algorithm. Sensitivity analysis indicates that some input variables impact the profit increase significantly.

<P>Low oxygen or hypoxia can be observed in the central region of solid tumors. Hypoxia is a strong stimulus for new blood vessel formation or angiogenesis, which is essential for tumor growth and progression. Fibroblast growth factor??11 (FGF11) is an intracellular non-secretory FGF whose function has not yet been fully characterized. In the present study, we demonstrated that FGF11 expression is upregulated under hypoxic conditions in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). FGF11 overexpression stimulated capillary-like tube formation, yet did not affect cell migration. Notably, FGF11 markedly increased the levels of tight junction proteins including occludin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and claudin-5 in HUVECs. The FGF11 promoter contains hypoxia response elements (HREs), and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) binds to HREs to activate hypoxia-related genes. We demonstrated that hypoxia or HIF-1 expression under normoxic conditions increased the luciferase activity driven by the FGF11 promoter. However, deletion of the HREs from the FGF11 promoter rendered reporter gene activity unresponsive to hypoxia or HIF-1. Taken together, we propose that FGF11 may be involved in the stabilization of capillary-like tube structures associated with angiogenesis and may act as a modulator of hypoxia-induced pathological processes such as tumorigenesis.</P>

The effect of exo-polymer from Ganoderma lucidum on the swimming endurance capacity of mice was investigated. The administration of the exo-polymer (100 ㎎/㎏ body weight) increased the swimming endurance capacity of mice by about 10 min and reduced the muscle and liver glycogen exhaustion by 18.5% and 67.2%, respectively. A substantial decrease in serum lactate accumulation (50.7%) was also achieved under the influence of the exo-polymer. The exo-polymer was determined to be a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 780 kDa and found to contain 82.8% carbohydrate and 17.2% protein.

The fumigant activity of phosphine (PH3) and ethyl formate (EF) was determined to all stage of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) under high oxygen concentration (50% and 80%). Oxygenated PH3 and EF were tested at two different temperatures (20°C and 4°C) during 7 days. Two oxygenated fumigants were treated with LC10, 30 and 50 values of single fumigant against each stage of P. operculella. At 10% inhibition of hatchability concentration value, inhibition of hatchability of P. operculella eggs was shown 20.3% and 9.2% with 50% and 80% oxygenated PH3 at 20°C at 1 day after treatment, respectively. The fumigant activity of oxygenated PH3 was increased at all stage of P. operculella except eggs both 20°C and 4°C. However, oxygenated EF was determined low fumigant efficacy to hatchability of eggs and emergence rate of pupae. The insecticidal activities of P. operculella larvae and adults were slightly increased mortality rather than single EF. In this result suggests that oxygenated phosphine is effective method for managing P. operculella. But, oxygenated EF is not effective.

Wet solid wastes including spent ion exchange resins, evaporator concentrates and sludges require solidification to transform wastes into an acceptable solid, monolithic form for final disposal. The development of the process control program for the solidification of radioactive sludges generated at nuclear power plants has been in progress to provide reasonable assurance that the solidified product will meet the established waste acceptance criteria for solidified waste. A mobile solidification system to produce the solidified waste in the size of a 200 L drum was used, which adopts the in-line mixing method where the waste and binder are mixed and then transferred to the disposable container. To simulate radioactive sludges, non-radioactive sludges are synthesized and the specimens are prepared by using them. The qualification tests on the prepared specimens including the compressive strength test, the thermal cycling test, the irradiation test, the leach test, the immersion test, etc. have been performed to qualify recipes for a range of waste compositions. The results of the tests will be analyzed and discussed.

Background/Aim: The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of lamivudine (LAM) and entecavir (ETV) in prevention of HBV reactivation in patients receiving systemic chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 554 non-hepatic cancer patients with HBsAg who underwent chemotherapy and received prophylactic antiviral therapy (454 with LAM and 100 with ETV) at the Samsung Medical Center between January 2008 and December 2010 were identified. Exclusion criteria were as following: late prophylaxis (not started within the first cycle of chemotherapy), any prior chemotherapy or/and antiviral therapy, follow-up less than 3 months, irregular medication, and chronic hepatitis B. Finally, clinical outcomes of 146 patients in LAM group and 40 in ETV group were compared. Hepatitis was defined as a 3 times increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) that exceeds 40 IU/L or an absolute increase of ALT to >100IU/L when compared with the baseline pre-chemotherapy value. Results: At baseline, there were no significant differences between two groups with regard to gender, aspartate aminotransferase, ALT, bilirubin, albumin, cancer type, purpose of chemotherapy, steroid use, and adjuvant radiotherapy. However, patients were younger (48.2 ± 9.4 vs. 51.5 ± 9.4, p=0.046), HBeAg seropositivity rate was higher (28.9% vs. 11.7%, p=0.010), and baseline HBV DNA level were higher [2401.0 IU/mL (<9->1.7x108) vs. 291.5 IU/mL (<9->1.7x108), p=0.006] in ETV group compared to LAM group. Five patients (2.7%) developed hepatitis: 4/146 (2.7%) and 1/40 (2.5%) in LAM and ETV group, respectively (p=1.000). Among them, 3 patients were accompanied by HBV DNA elevation (≥10-fold) only in LAM group (2.1% vs. 0.0%, p=1.000). During preemptive preemptive treatment, two in LAM group and one in ETV group developed hepatitis (1.4% vs. 2.5%, p=1.000). Severity of hepatitis was not different between two groups. Conclusions: LAM and ETV are comparable in efficacy in terms of prevention of hepatitis in HBsAg-positive patients receiving cancer chemotherapy.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of an externally used 1,444-nm neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet(Nd:YAG) laser for the treatment of periorbital syringomas. Methods: Nineteen patients with periorbital syringomas were treated twice with the externally used 1,444-nm Nd:YAG laser at 2-month intervals. Laser fluences were delivered to each papule with pulse energy of 160mJ, 1.6W of power, and at a 10Hz pulse rate. Clinical improvement and patient satisfaction were assessed at 2 and 6 months after each treatment. Side effects were also examined. Results: Clinical improvement of >50% was observed in 68.4% of individuals at 2 months after first treatment(2FT) and in all patients at 6 months after second treatment(6ST). Patient satisfaction of no less than ‘satisfied’ was recorded for 63.2% of patients by 2FT, and in 89.5% of patients by 6ST. Erythema was observed in 63.2% of patients, but only at 2FT. Conclusion: Externally used 1,444-nm Nd:YAG laser treatment may represent an effective and safe approach for the treatment of periorbital syringomas, resulting in good satisfaction and minimal side effects.

Recently Manipulation capability is important for a robot. Interaction between a robot hand and objects can be properly controlled only is suitable sensors are available. Recently the tendency is to create robot hands more compact and high integrated sensors system, in order to increase the grasping capability and in order to reduce cabling through the finger, the palm and the arm. As a matter of fact, miniaturization and cabling harness represents a significant limitation to the design of small sized embedded sensor. Ongoing work is focusing on a flexible manipulation system, which consists of a dual flexible multi-fingered hand-arm system, and a dual active vision system.
