COVID-19 and Risk Factors of Anxiety and Depression in South Korea

Objective The aims of this study were to explore the prevalence of and identify predictors of anxiety and depression related to coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) in South Korea.Methods The analysis is based on a quota survey design and a sampling frame that permitted recruitment of a national sample of 1,014 individuals between March 17–31, 2020. Several standardized measurements were used, including GAD-7, PHQ-9, COVID-19 related fear, restrictions in deaily life, as well as sociodemographic information and physical and psychosocial needs during the pandemic. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to analyze the influence of sociodemographic factors, fear, and physical/psychosocial needs on anxiety and depression.Results Significant numbers of the respondents were identifiable anxiety (19.0%) and depression group (17.5%), respectively. This indicates that the depression and anxiety prevalence rate after the COVID-19 is substantially high compared to the depression rate of 2.6% in 2020 and 2.8% in 2018 both reported in the Korea Community Health Survey and the anxiety rate of 5.7% reported in 2016 Survey of Mental Disorders in Korea. Multiple logistic regression results showed age, COVID-19 related fear, and the level of restrictions in daily as significant factors in understanding and predicting the anxiety group. Likfewise, the COVID-19 related fear, restrictions in daily life, and need for economic support were important predictors in predicting the depression group.Conclusion Findings on predictors for greater vulnerability to anxiety and depression has important implications for public mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

<P>Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) has been implicated in synaptic plasticity and other neural functions in the brain. However, the role of individual PI3K isoforms in the brain is unclear. We investigated the role of PI3K gamma in hippocampal-dependent synaptic plasticity and cognitive functions. We found that PI3K gamma has a crucial and specific role in NMDA receptor (NMDAR)-mediated synaptic plasticity at mouse Schaffer collateral-commissural synapses. Both genetic deletion and pharmacological inhibition of PI3K gamma disrupted NMDAR long-term depression (LTD) while leaving other forms of synaptic plasticity intact. Accompanying this physiological deficit, the impairment of NMDAR LTD by PI3K gamma blockade was specifically correlated with deficits in behavioral flexibility. These findings suggest that a specific PI3K isoform, PI3K gamma, is critical for NMDAR LTD and some forms of cognitive function. Thus, individual isoforms of PI3Ks may have distinct roles in different types of synaptic plasticity and may therefore influence various kinds of behavior.</P>

<P>IRSp53 is an adaptor protein that acts downstream of Rac and Cdc42 small GTPases and is implicated in the regulation of membrane deformation and actin filament assembly. In neurons, IRSp53 is an abundant postsynaptic protein and regulates actin-rich dendritic spines; however, its in vivo functions have not been explored. We characterized transgenic mice deficient of IRSp53 expression. Unexpectedly, IRSp53(-/-) neurons do not show significant changes in the density and ultrastructural morphologies of dendritic spines. Instead, IRSp53(-/-) neurons exhibit reduced AMPA/NMDA ratio of excitatory synaptic transmission and a selective increase in NMDA but not AMPA receptor-mediated transmission. IRSp53(-/-) hippocampal slices show a markedly enhanced long-term potentiation (LTP) with no changes in long-term depression. LTP-inducing theta burst stimulation enhances NMDA receptor-mediated transmission. Spatial learning and novel object recognition are impaired in IRSp53(-/-) mice. These results suggest that IRSp53 is involved in the regulation of NMDA receptor-mediated excitatory synaptic transmission, LTP, and learning and memory behaviors.</P>

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to confirm how the income level of the family caregivers for recipients in long-term care (LTC) facilities are related to family caregivers’ willingness to pay out-of-pocket payments for better LTC services. Methods: This study used the 2021 survey data on cost sharing in LTC facilities, which surveyed 1,111 family caregivers of recipients. To analyze the effect of the income level of family caregivers on the willingness to pay out-of-pocket payments for better LTC services, a chi-square test, a Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test, and a logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: We found that 39.0% of respondents were willing to pay out-of-pocket payments if better services were available to recipients. Adjusted for recipient’s and family caregivers’ variables, characteristics of out-of-pocket payment, and LTC service use, the willingness to pay in the monthly household income level of 5 million won and more was 3.28 times higher than those in the monthly household income level of less than 1 million won (95% confidence level=1.93~5.55, p<.001). As monthly household income rises, the odds ratio of willingness to pay tended to increase (p<.001). Conclusion: Family caregivers who bear the out-of-pocket payments of LTC facilities are willing to pay more for better LTC services. In addition, the higher the income level of family caregivers, the higher their willingness to pay. A full-scale review of the system reform is needed to prevent out-of-pocket payments from becoming an economic barrier to service users and to contribute to service quality improvement and financial stability.

<P> The present study attempted to predict selective exposure to media messages as a function of personality and situation, which has rarely been examined in prior relevant research. Employing a quasi-experimental method, the interplay between prevailing perceived threat from the economic crisis that started in 2008 and each of the two personality types when dealing with threat - repression and sensitization - was examined to predict online news selection behavior, as unobtrusively recorded. A significant interaction between perceived threat and sensitization tendency was obtained for both the selection of financial crisis-related news and avoidance of financial crisis-unrelated news. The implications of this exclusive pattern of online news selection behavior are discussed. </P>

<P>Diacylglycerol (DAG) is an important lipid signalling molecule that exerts an effect on various effector proteins including protein kinase C. A main mechanism for DAG removal is to convert it to phosphatidic acid (PA) by DAG kinases (DGKs). However, it is not well understood how DGKs are targeted to specific subcellular sites and tightly regulates DAG levels. The neuronal synapse is a prominent site of DAG production. Here, we show that DGKzeta is targeted to excitatory synapses through its direct interaction with the postsynaptic PDZ scaffold PSD-95. Overexpression of DGKzeta in cultured neurons increases the number of dendritic spines, which receive the majority of excitatory synaptic inputs, in a manner requiring its catalytic activity and PSD-95 binding. Conversely, DGKzeta knockdown reduces spine density. Mice deficient in DGKzeta expression show reduced spine density and excitatory synaptic transmission. Time-lapse imaging indicates that DGKzeta is required for spine maintenance but not formation. We propose that PSD-95 targets DGKzeta to synaptic DAG-producing receptors to tightly couple synaptic DAG production to its conversion to PA for the maintenance of spine density.</P>

<P>There is an emerging interest in protein expression profiling with the aim of identifying novel diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets in breast cancer. We analyzed breast cancer tissues by 2-D DIGE using a narrow range IPG strip (pH?5.5-6.7) after the immunodepletion of serum albumin and Ig. Sixty-three protein spots were detected with more than 1.8-fold differences (p?<0.05 for three technical replicates) from a set of tissue samples in which three tumor and three nontumor samples were randomly selected from six breast cancer subjects and pooled separately. Of these, 53 proteins were successfully identified by MS. Among the proteins whose levels were increased, we identified three novel WD-repeat-motif-bearing proteins that have been known to be involved in actin remodeling: Arp2/3 complex subunit 2 (p34-Arc), coronin-1A and WD-repeat protein 1 (Wdr1). Significantly increased amounts of p34-Arc and coronin-1A in breast cancer were also shown by Western blot analysis of matched tumor and nontumor tissue samples (N?=?11, p?<0.05), and were consistent with the mRNA levels retrieved from publicly available microarray databases. The siRNA knockdown of p34-Arc attenuated the invasion of SK-BR3 breast cancer cells into Matrigel. In contrast, the overexpression of coronin-1A increased this invasive activity. Taken together, the cellular levels of p34-Arc and coronin-1A were linked to cancer development and migration. The data obtained from the present study provides new insight into the management of breast cancer.</P>
