      • Analytic approaches to evaluation modify hedonic responses

        Recent research on using tastes to condition hedonic responses in odours has shown that analytical approaches to the odour/taste elements during conditioning inhibit the development of changes in odour liking. Since analytical ratings are frequently made by consumers in conjunction with ratings of overall liking of products, we examined whether the effect of analytical approaches was also evident in sensory evaluations. A comparison was made between overall liking ratings of a tea drink, made with (analytical) or without (synthetic) the anticipation of subsequent attribute ratings. Compared to two analytical groups, the synthetic group gave significantly higher liking ratings. These data are interpreted in the light of recent findings that analytical approaches inhibit the utilization of hedonic information.

      • Methoxy Formation Induced Defects on MoS<sub>2</sub>

        <P>We find that exposure of the MoS<SUB>2</SUB> basal plane to methanol leads to the formation of adsorbed methoxy and coincides with sulfur vacancy generation. The conversion of methanol to methoxy on MoS<SUB>2</SUB> is temperature dependent. Density functional theory simulations and experiment indicate that the methoxy moieties are bound to molybdenum, not sulfur, while some adsorbed methanol is readily desorbed near or slightly above room temperature. Our calculations also suggest that the dissociation of methanol via O-H bond scission occurs at the defect site (sulfur vacancy), followed subsequently by formation of a weakly bound H<SUB>2</SUB>S species that promptly desorbs from the surface with creation of new sulfur vacancy. Photoluminescence and scanning tunneling microscopy show clear evidence of the sulfur vacancy creation on the MoS<SUB>2</SUB> surface, after exposure to methanol.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • River Communities in Jakarta: Pedagogies in Environmental Stewardship

        Indonesian water resource and river management legislation has complicated the management of rivers over the past decades. Limited financial resources and lack of coordination across national, province and municipal boundaries has led to Community-based organisations taking a key role in environmental education, advocacy and action. More recently, a number of key legislative shifts have been critical to the progression of integrated water resources management in the country, and led to governments partnering with these same Community-based organisations as a result of their successes. The paper addresses the important role of communities as advocates of a river. It builds off personal experiences travelling down and working along the Ciliwung River, and research collaborations with local Community-led action groups such as Komunitas Peduli Ciliwung (KPC). The paper shares reflections of how local Community-led action groups rally around the challenges of the river to foster a stronger relationship with the natural environment amidst governmental decision-making processes and multi-scalar landscape transformations.

        한국기업과 미국기업의 경쟁정보활동에 관한 실증적 비교연구

        본 연구는 한국과 미국의 제도적 환경 및 경쟁적 환경이 양국기업의 CI활동에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 전제로 한국기업과 미국기업의 CI활동에 대한 가설설정 및 검증을 수행하였고, 이를 통해 이들 기업의 CI활동에 대한 실증적 비교연구를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 CI활동에 대한 기업의 태도 측면에서 CI개방성과 CI윤리성, 정보유형 측면에서 공개정보 및 비공개정보 활용도, 분석유형 측면에서 사내데이터베이스 및 정량적 분석 활용도, CI활동의 수준 측면에서 CI관심도 및 CI정도를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 보면, 1) 한국기업에 비해 미국기업은 CI활동에 대해 기업내외부적으로 보다 개방적인 태도를 취한다; 2) 한국기업에 비해 미국기업은 CI활동을 보다 윤리적인 활동으로 인식하고 CI활동에 보다 윤리적인 접근을 취한다; 3) 정보수집을 위해 한국기업에 비해 미국기업은 대중매체를 통한 공개정보를 보다 적극적으로 활용하는 반면, 미국기업에 비해 한국기업은 인맥을 통한 비공개정보를 보다 적극적으로 활용한다; 4) 정보분석을 위해 사내데이터베이스 활용도 및 정량적 분석 활용도에 있어 한국기업과 미국기업 간에 차이가 존재하지 않는다; 5) 한국기업에 비해 미국기업이 CI활동에 대해 보다 높은 관심을 가진다; 6) 한국기업보다 미국기업이 상대적으로 더 높은 수준의 CI활동을 수행한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 본 연구에서 CI활동에 관한 이론적, 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다. Based on a premise that the institutional and competitive environments of Korea and America have a significant impact on the competitive intelligence (CI) practices of Korean and American companies, respectively, this research conducts an empirical comparative study on the CI practices of Korean and American companies through hypothesis testing. The study compares these two groups of companies in terms of CI openness and CI ethics, closed and disclosed information usage, internal databases and quantitative analysis usage, CI interest, and CI level. Main results include: 1) relative to Korean firms, US firms tend to have a more open attitude toward CI practices; 2) US firms seem to perceive CI activities to be more ethical than Korean firms do; 3) for information collection, US firms appear to rely more on disclosed information than Korean firms do, while Korean firms appear to rely more on undisclosed information than US firms do; 4) there seems to be no significant difference between Korean and US firms in the usage of internal databases and quantitative analysis methods for data analysis; 5) relative to Korean firms, US firms tend to have a greater interest in CI; 6) US firms seem to conduct CI at a higher level than Korean firms do. Based on these key results, the study discusses theoretical and practical implications for CI.

        PROP Taster Status and the Rejection of Foods with Added Tastants

        Sensitivity to 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) tasting predicts sensitivity to food qualities as well as rejection of some strong tasting foods. Using consumer rejection threshold (CRT) method, this study aimed to assess whether systematic changes in the taste intensities of familiar foods would lead to earlier rejection of these products by PROP tasters than by PROP non-tasters. Subjects rated the intensity of PROP solution and were divided into tasters (Ts) and non-tasters (NTs). And Ts were further divided into medium-tasters (MTs) and super-tasters (STs). Difference thresholds and CRTs were then evaluated for caffeine in coffee, citric acid in orange juice, and for NaCl in beef soup. For each food, Ts were more sensitive to variations in tastants than NTs. Ts also rejected more bitter coffee, more sour orange juice, and less salty beef soup more readily than did NTs. Comparisons among NTs, MTs, and STs gave fewer clear differences.

        한국기업과 미국기업의 경쟁정보활동에 관한 탐색적 비교연구

        본 연구에서는 제도적 환경이 현저하게 다른 한국기업과 미국기업의 경쟁정보활동에 관한 탐색적 비교분석을 통하여 경쟁정보활동에 있어 양국기업 간의 차이점과 유사점을 파악한다. 연구결과에 따르면, 경쟁정보활동 관련 모든 핵심영역(프로세스, 방법, 인프라 등)에서 양국기업 간에 현저한 차이가 존재한다. 예를 들어, 정보수집과 관련하여, 한국기업은 미국기업에 비해 인맥과 비공개정보를 더 많이 활용하는가하면, 미국기업은 한국기업에 비해 신문, 인터넷, 보고서 등 각종매체와 공개정보를 더 많이 활용한다. 정보사용자에게 정보를 전달하기 위해 한국기업은 미국기업에 비해 보고서를, 미국기업은 한국기업에 비해 e-메일을 더 자주 활용한다. 한국기업보다 미국기업이 경쟁정보활동을 수행함에 있어 기업 내부적으로 더 개방적인 분위기이다. 또한 미국기업에 비해 한국기업의 구성원들이 경쟁정보활동을 비윤리적으로 보는 경향이 크다. 이와 같은 연구결과는 미국의 경쟁정보 이론 및 기법의 국내 도입을 위한 중요한 시사점을 제공할 뿐만 아니라, 국내 상황에 적합한 경쟁정보 이론 및 기법 개발을 요구한다. This research explores the differences in competitive intelligence practices between Korean and American companies. The results of this research reveal significant differences between the two groups of companies in all major areas of competitive intelligence, including its process, methods, and infrastructure. For example, Korean companies utilize personal connections to gather undisclosed information more than American companies, while American companies utilize various media, such as the internet and newspapers, to gather disclosed information more than Korean companies. To deliver information to relevant users, Korean companies rely on reports more than their counterparts, and American companies rely on e-mails more than their counterparts. American firms are internally more open in conducting competitive intelligence activities than Korean companies. The organizational members of Korean firms have a greater tendency to view competitive intelligence as somewhat unethical than their counterparts. These results suggest some important implication for the introduction of American CI theories and methods to local Korean companies, and they also call for a development of CI theories and methods tailored to the conditions of local companies.
