An Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller with Tracking Differentiator for Servo Systems

A sliding mode controller with parameter adaptation and a tracking differentiator is proposed for servo systems with unknown disturbances. The parameter adaptation is introduced both in order to enhance the disturbance rejection properties of the closed loop system, and to maintain the tracking performance despite plant parameter changes. In addition, a tracking differentiator is integrated with the sliding mode controller to get noise free differential signals to further improve the system performance. The proposed controller has been implemented and tested with an industrial Ink-jet plotter. Experimental results show that the controller achieves minimum tracking error and robust functionality.

<P>DNA strands have been recently found to play a role in crystallizing organic semiconductors as a substitute for conventional surfactants. Such DNA-guided organic semiconductor particles possessed the recognition ability to complementary target DNAs, resulting in “enhanced luminescence” due to the lesser degree of non-radiative dissipation. Apart from this, in this study we developed selective recognition of mercury ions by utilizing DNA probes having ion-specific thymine-rich motifs. Strikingly, the specific ion-DNA interaction triggered rather distinctive “depressed luminescence” emitting from the particles. The mercury ions were found to be present both at the surface and the inner regions, which were discovered to relate to the drastic morphological distortion of the particles as evidenced by elemental, electron microscopy, and confocal fluorescence microscopy analyses. This novel phenomenon discovered would expand the technological values of organic semiconductors conjugated with oligonucleotides toward a wider range of target-specific applications.</P>

Chalcone isomerase (CHI) is a key enzyme ofthe flavonoid pathway that plays crucial roles in plant responsesto various pathogens. Our previous study using comparativetranscriptome analysis of soybean inoculated with or withoutPhytophthora sojae revealed Glyma.20G241500, a homologof CHI1A in Arabidopsis thaliana, to be induced by P.sojaein soybean. In the present study, we isolated the gene fromsoybean cultivar Nannong 10-1, designating it GmCHI1A. GmCHI1A transcripts were detected in soybean roots, stemsand leaves, with the highest levels in roots. Interestingly,GmCHI1A localizes to the cortical endoplasmic reticulum(ER). GmCHI1A was overexpressed in hairy roots to furtheruncover the roles of CHIs in soybean. Compared to emptyvector-expressing hairy roots (EV) infected with P. sojae,hairy roots overexpressing GmCHI1A (OE) exhibited decreasedP. sojae biomass accumulation, shortened the lesion lengthsand reduced zoospores germination. These results demonstratethat GmCHI1A plays positive roles in the response ofsoybean to P. sojae.
Three-Port Laparoscopic Exploration is not Sufficient for Patients with T4 Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer death. The majority of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma in China present with advanced disease. Ruling out unresectable cancers from an unnecessary "open" exploration is very important. The aim of this study was to assess the value of five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration in T4 gastric cancer in comparison with three-port laparoscopic exploration and laparotomy exploration. We conducted a retrospective study on 126 patients with T4 stage scheduled for D2 curative gastrectomy based on computed tomography (CT) staging at Department of Gastric Cancer and Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, from Apr. 2011 to Apr. 2013. Laparotomy exploration (Group I), three-port laparoscopic exploration (Group II) or five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration (Group III) were performed prior to radical gastrectomy. Accuracy rate for feasibility of D2 curative gastrectomy in laparotomy exploration and five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration groups was higher than that in the three-port laparoscopic exploration group. Five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration group had the highest accuracy resection rate (Group I vs Group II vs Group III,92.6% vs78.6% vs 97.7%; p<0.05) and shorter length of hospitalization (Group I vs Group II vs Group III, $9.58{\pm}4.17$ vs $6.13{\pm}2.85$ vs $5.00{\pm}1.81$; p<0.001). Three-port laparoscopic exploration has low accuracy rate for assessing feasibility of D2 curative gastrectomy and five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration should be performed on patients with T4 gastric cancer.

Two novel binuclear metal-organic coordination complexes [$Cd_2(Hdpa)_4(bpy)_2$] (1), [$Dy_2(dpa)_2(bpy)_2(NO_3)_2-(H_2O)_2$](bpy) (2) (where $H_2dpa$ = biphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, spectral method (IR), elemental analysis (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic spectra (UV-vis), fluorescent in the solid state and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Complexes 1-2 crystallizes isomorphously in the Triclinic space group P-1. The ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions and hydrogen-bonds play a vital role in determining the crystal packing and construction of the extended 3-D supramolecular network.

Calcineurin B-like protein-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) are a group of typical Ser/Thr protein kinases that mediate calcium signals. Extensive studies using Arabi-dopsis plants have demonstrated that many calcium sig-natures that activate CIPKs originate from abiotic stresses. However, there are few reports on the functional demon-stration of CIPKs in other plants, especially in grasses. In this study, we used a loss-of-function mutation to charac-terize the function of the rice CIPK gene OsCIPK31. Expo-sure to high concentrations of NaCl or mannitol effected a rapid and transient enhancement of OsCIPK31 expression. These findings were observed only in the light. However, longer exposure to most stresses resulted in down-regulation of OsCIPK31 expression in both the presence and absence of light. To determine the physiological roles of OsCIPK31 in rice plants, the sensitivity of oscipk31::Ds, which is a transposon Ds insertion mutant, to abiotic stresses was examined during germination and seedling stages. oscipk31::Ds mutants exhibited hypersensitive phenotypes to ABA, salt, mannitol, and glucose. Com-pared with wild-type rice plants, mutants exhibited re-tarded germination and slow seedling growth. In addition, oscipk31::Ds seedlings exhibited enhanced expression of several stress-responsive genes after exposure to these abiotic stresses. However, the expression of ABA meta-bolic genes and the endogenous levels of ABA were not altered significantly in the oscipk31::Ds mutant. This study demonstrated that rice plants use OsCIPK31 to modulate responses to abiotic stresses during the seed germination and seedling stages and to modulate the expression of stress-responsive genes.
Top-k Algorithm for User Preferences based on Selection Strategy

In order to deal with multiple user preferences and improve query efficiency, selection strategy is adopted for top-k query to depress the compare operations. Firstly, the kth order statistics are selected randomly along with partitioning the data set basing on it, and the top-k result set can be received after several recursive partitions. Secondly, to select the kth order statistics accurately, the approximate kth order statistics is choose as threshold according to the similarity of user preference and system preference, and the top-k query result set can be accessed through simple comparison. Finally, the time complexities of presented algorithms are analyzed and their correctness and completeness are proved respectively. The experimental results show that our algorithms improve the efficiency of top-k query greatly.

The taxonomic status of the subspecies Alectoris chukar remains unclear since 1830. To obtain more information on phylogenetic relationships within the species, the entire mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control-region sequences of eleven subspecies were analyzed to construct the phylogenetic tree among the subspecies of chukar partridge. There was a significant genetic differentiation among the subspecies with little gene flow. The phylogenetic tree grouped all the eleven subspecies into a monophyletic cluster, which included two deeply divergent phylogroups. Haplotype network was observed within A. chukar, and gene flow estimates suggest isolation among the subspecies. Our data confirmed a locality of origin (central Asia) for chukar partridge, and have clarified the relationships among the subspecies. A conventional calibration of mtDNA sequence divergence indicated an early to middle Pleistocene evolution of the main clades in A. chukar, which could have diversified in allopatry in the lowland of continental Asia. Cyclic changes in Pleistocene climate and landscape might result in subspecific divergence of chukar partridge.
