Cobalt-immobilized SBA-15 6a-c was synthesized from alkyne-attached SBA 5a-c by the reaction with $Co_2(CO)_8$ in toluene. Alkyne group was introduced into amino SBA-15 (4) by imine-linkage or substitution with propargyl bromide to afford iminoalkyne 5a and aminoalkyne 5b, respectively. Meanwhile, alkyne 5c was prepared in one-step by reacting triethoxysilyl hexyne with SBA-15. Dicobalt-complexes 6a-c were characterized by means of FT-IR, solid-state NMR and elemental analysis.

Emulsions are mixture of immiscible liquids in which one is dispersed in all over the other. They have been applied to many applications including cosmetics, foods, drug delivery system (DDS), fine chemicals, and chemical separations. Especially, emulsion technology is one of the most useful technique to formulate cosmetics such as eye cream, foundation, and foam cleansing. In general, the emulsions can be generated by mechanical agitation of two immiscible fluids. However, the emulsions obtained by conventional method have limited in stability, monodispersity, and complicate process. We describe here preparation techniques of representative cosmetic emulsions such as liposome, liquid crystal emulsion, nanoemulsion, multiple emulsion, and pickering emulsion. Furthermore, various factors which can control the physical properties of each cosmetic emulsions are briefly discussed.

Genetic engineering is a potential approach to improve secondary metabolism in plants. In order to elucidate the effect of production of anthocyanin pigment 1 (PAP1) overexpression on the bioactivity of ginseng, we analyzed its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-elastase activities in this study. Our results showed that PAP1 overexpression increased the production of polyphenolic compounds including anthocyanins. The antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-elastase activities were stronger in anthocyanin-overproducing ginseng hairy roots (AOX) than in wild ginseng hairy roots. Using a different solvent system (0, 30, 70, and 100% (v/v) EtOH), we revealed that variations in the contents of the polyphenolic compounds were highly correlated with changes in the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of AOX. The antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-elastase effects of AOX highlight genetic engineering as a powerful approach to enhance the therapeutic properties of plants. Our results show that AOX could potentially have various functional applications in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries
Clinical Evaluation of Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit for Scrub Typhus with Improved Performance

<P>Diagnosis of scrub typhus is challenging due to its more than twenty serotypes and the similar clinical symptoms with other acute febrile illnesses including leptospirosis, murine typhus and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Accuracy and rapidity of a diagnostic test to <I>Orientia tsutsugamushi</I> is an important step to diagnose this disease. To discriminate scrub typhus from other diseases, the improved ImmuneMed Scrub Typhus Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) was evaluated in Korea and Sri Lanka. The sensitivity at the base of each IgM and IgG indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) in Korean patients was 98.6% and 97.1%, and the specificity was 98.2% and 97.7% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for retrospective diagnosis at the base of IFA in Sri Lanka was 92.1% and 96.1%. ImmuneMed RDT was not reactive to any serum from seventeen diseases including hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (n = 48), leptospirosis (n = 23), and murine typhus (n = 48). ImmuneMed RDT shows superior sensitivity (98.6% and 97.1%) compared with SD Bioline RDT (84.4% at IgM and 83.3% at IgG) in Korea. The retrospective diagnosis of ImmuneMed RDT exhibits 94.0% identity with enzyme-linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using South India patient serum samples. These results suggest that this RDT can replace other diagnostic tests and is applicable for global diagnosis of scrub typhus. This rapid and accurate diagnosis will be beneficial for diagnosing and managing scrub typhus.</P>
