This study aims to investigate the rhythmic patterns in the English speech produced by Chinese learners of English who learn English as a foreign language (EFL learners). Utilizing interval-based rhythm metrics, namely, VarcoC, VarcoV, nPVI-C, nPVI-V, and %V, the study compared the rhythmic differences in English speech between ten native speakers from the United States and forty Chinese EFL learners from mainland China. A sentence elicitation task consisting of thirty picture prompts and corresponding thirty stimuli sentences with at least five vocalic and four consonantal intervals was conducted. Statistical results reveal that both Chinese advanced learners and beginners had significantly lower degree of stress-timed in their English speech, indicating that the acquisition of the L2 speech rhythm was influenced by the learners’ L1 rhythmic pattern. In addition, the results also show that the Chinese advanced learners had significantly higher degree of stress-timed in their English speech than beginners and showed no significant difference with native speakers in VarcoC and nPVI-C. These results indicate that the direction of L2 speech rhythm development was from more syllable-timed to more stress-timed.

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that the consumption of dairy products helps lower the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated the association between the consumption of dairy products and T2D events in middle-aged Korean adults. METHODS: We followed up 53,288 participants (16,895 male and 36,393 female) in the Health Examinees (HEXA) study. The consumption of dairy products was assessed using the self-administered food frequency questionnaire, and T2D was defined according to the 2015 treatment guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models after adjusting for potential confounders. Spline regression was used to better represent the association between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D. RESULTS: Among male, those with higher consumption of dairy products had a significantly lower risk of T2D than those who consumed essentially no dairy products (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.58 to 0.91). In particular, consumption of yogurt (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.93; ptrend= 0.035) and cheese (HR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.89; ptrend= 0.005) was negatively associated with the incidence of T2D in male. In female, daily consumption of 1 serving of yogurt decreased the risk of T2D by 11%. CONCLUSIONS: The association between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D differed by sex and dairy product type. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these associations.

The design of catalysts with excellent catalytic activity plays an important role in the field of solid-statehydrogen storage of new energy sources. Herein, a novel hydrangea-like NiO@NiMoO4 composite catalystwas prepared through a facile hydrothermal reaction. Subsequently, NiO@NiMoO4 was doped into MgH2by ball milling to solve the problems of high dehydrogenation temperature and slow desorption kineticsof MgH2. It can be seen from the experimental results that the MgH2 + 10 wt% NiO@NiMoO4 compositestarts to dehydrogenate at about 190 C, which is about 170 C lower than that of pure MgH2. Meanwhile,after complete dehydrogenation, the composites can start to absorb hydrogen below 40 C. Comparedwith pure MgH2, the activation energy of hydrogen absorption and dehydrogenation of the compositedecreased by 47.6 kJ/mol and 46.5 kJ/mol, respectively. In 10th cycle tests, the MgH2 + 10 wt%NiO@NiMoO4 composite still has good cycle stability. After adding a small amount of biomass charcoal,the hydrogen storage capacity can even be maintained above 97%. Furthermore, the characterizationresults show that the in situ generated new species Mo and Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 synergistically promotethe adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen. This new synergistic mechanism provides new comprehensiveinsights for improving reversible hydrogen storage in MgH2.

Particularly, the consumptions of yogurt (HR=0.75; 95% CI=0.60, 0.93; p-trend=0.0351) and cheese (HR=0.66; 95% CI=0.49, 0.89; p-trend=0.0055) were negatively associated with the incidence of T2D in men. The weekly consumption of dairy products, particularly yogurt, reduces the prevalence of T2D in Korean adults. Bacterial infection is a general problem that increases the burden of wound treatment. It has been intenselyexpected to fabricate bioactive wound dressings with good antibacterial effect. In this work, doublelayerhybrid nanofiber membranes (DHNM) of PVA/COL@ZnONPs and PCL/Gt@TiO2NPs were built by continuouselectrospinning. The matrix membranes with acceptable tensile strength and moisture permeabilityproperty were obtained by optimizing the formulation and spinning conditions. The matrixmembranes exhibited Young’s modulus of 91.93 MPa and tensile stress of 2.61 MPa. The water vaportransmittance rate (WVTR) of matrix membranes was 1140.45 g/m2day. ZnONPs in the inner layer werereleased quickly in 2 hours to destroy the bacteria in the wound. TiO2NPs in the outer layer were sustainablyreleased within 7 days to resist the bacterial attack outsides. The double-layer membranes showedgood biocompatibility and enhanced the migration of cells. The cell migration rate of double-layer hybridmembranes (DHNM) was higher than that of single layer membranes. The double-layer membraneshowed 93% elimination of the wound specific P. aeruginosa, over 99% inhibition to E. coli and over 97%to S. aureus. This study provides a potential approach for wound dressings to improve antibacterial effect.

This research examined the roles of linguistic experience, direction of rhythmic change and timing cue in the discrimination of different rhythmic patterns by native speakers of English, Chinese advanced EFL learners, Korean advanced EFL learners and Chinese beginning EFL learners in an AAX discrimination test. Results showed that the participants were able to discriminate the rhythmic patterns of different utterances, but the discrimination was not driven by their linguistic experience. Rather, their performances were dependent on the rhythmic patterns of the context stimuli (AA stimuli) in the AAX trial. Participants performed better in the trails where the X stimuli were preceded by syllable- timed AA stimuli. Regarding the role of timing cues in rhythm discrimination, the speech rhythm differences made bigger contributions to rhythm discrimination than speech tempo differences. Moreover, the timing cues of vocalic intervals played more important roles than their consonantal counterparts.
