      • <i>ITGB6</i> loss-of-function mutations cause autosomal recessive amelogenesis imperfecta

        <P>Integrins are cell-surface adhesion receptors that bind to extracellular matrices (ECM) and mediate cell–ECM interactions. Some integrins are known to play critical roles in dental enamel formation. We recruited two Hispanic families with generalized hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Analysis of whole-exome sequences identified three <I>integrin beta 6</I> (<I>ITGB6</I>) mutations responsible for their enamel malformations. The female proband of Family 1 was a compound heterozygote with an <I>ITGB6</I> transition mutation in Exon 4 (g.4545G > A c.427G > A p.Ala143Thr) and an <I>ITGB6</I> transversion mutation in Exon 6 (g.27415T > A c.825T > A p.His275Gln). The male proband of Family 2 was homozygous for an <I>ITGB6</I> transition mutation in Exon 11 (g.73664C > T c.1846C > T p.Arg616*) and hemizygous for a transition mutation in Exon 6 of <I>Nance–Horan Syndrome</I> (<I>NHS</I> Xp22.13; g.355444T > C c.1697T > C p.Met566Thr). These are the first disease-causing <I>ITGB6</I> mutations to be reported. Immunohistochemistry of mouse mandibular incisors localized ITGB6 to the distal membrane of differentiating ameloblasts and pre-ameloblasts, and then ITGB6 appeared to be internalized by secretory stage ameloblasts. ITGB6 expression was strongest in the maturation stage and its localization was associated with ameloblast modulation. Our findings demonstrate that early and late amelogenesis depend upon cell–matrix interactions. Our approach (from knockout mouse phenotype to human disease) demonstrates the power of mouse reverse genetics in mutational analysis of human genetic disorders and attests to the need for a careful dental phenotyping in large-scale knockout mouse projects.</P>

      • Nano-textured surfaces using hybrid micro- and nano-materials for efficient water cooling

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Water cooling heat transfer was enhanced by texturing the heated surface with various micro- and nano-materials. The increased surface area by texturing facilitated not only enhanced convection, but also turbulent mixing, which increased the effective heat-transfer coefficient. A heated copper substrate was textured with electroplated copper oxide, sprayed silver nanowire, or sprayed copper micro-particles. Sprayed micro-particles were subsequently nano-textured by sand blasting with kanthal (Mo<SUB>2</SUB>Si) nanoparticles. Because of the extremely high hardness of kanthal, sand blasting dimpled the surface to increase the total surface area. Optimal texturing was identified for each material. Hybrid cases combining two different texturing materials were also investigated. All cases were quantitatively compared and that with the highest effective heat transfer was identified. Texturing materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The coating methods are simple, rapid, and scalable and may be cost-effective texturing schemes for various electronics cooling applications.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Water cooling heat transfer was enhanced by texturing the heated surface with various micro- and nano-materials. </LI> <LI> The increased surface area enhanced convection and turbulent mixing. </LI> <LI> A substrate was textured with electroplated copper oxide, sprayed silver nanowire or sprayed copper micro-particles. </LI> <LI> The texturing methods are appropriate for electronics cooling applications because of their simplicity and scalability. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Anaerobic Processes for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

        혐기성 공정은 호기성 공정에 비해 주로 중간농도 흑은 고농도의 폐수처리에 유리하므로 산업폐수처리에 적용가능성이 높다. 산업폐수처리에 있어 호기성이나 혐기성 공정 둘중 어느 공정을 선택할 것인가 하는 데는 어떤 특별한 기준은 없으나 호기성으로 적용할 때, 대체적으로 COD가 약 3,000㎎/ℓ이하 흑은 BOD가 약 2,000㎎/ℓ 이하의 농도를 가지는 폐수에 적합한 것으로 보고 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전 세계적으로 산업폐수처리에 많이 사용되고 있는 혐기성 특허공정(Up-flow Fully Packed Anaerobic Filter, Upflow Hybrid Anaerobic Filter, Two-Stage Fixed Media System, Downflow Anaerobic Filter, Upflow Sludge Blanket Reactor, Anaerobic Fluidized Bed Reactor, and Thermophilic Fixed-Film Reactor) 의 각각에 대하여 유기물 부하량, F/M비, 미생물 농도, 그리고 일반적인 COD 제거효율 등과 같은 중요한 인자를 분석하여 토의 하였다. 혐기성 산업폐수처리 시스템의 설계와 운전에 미치는 각종 영향인자에 대한 자세한 분석도 제시하였다. Anaerobic processes have become attractive alternatives to aerobic processes for treating moderate to high-strength industrial wastewater. While there are no definitive guidelines for process selection, aerobic processes generally are more appropriate for treating wastewaters containing chemical oxygen demand concentrations (COD) less than about 3,000㎎/L or biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) concentrations less than about 2,000㎎/L. In this paper, important parameters such as organic loading rate, F/M ratio, biomass concentration, and overall COD removal efficiency for internationally patented processes (Upflow Fully Packed Anaerobic Filter, Upflow Hybrid Anaerobic Filter, Two-Stage Fixed Media System, Downflow Anaerobic Filter, Upflow Sludge Blanket Reactor, Anaerobic Fluidized Bed Reactor, and Thermophilic Fixed-Film Reactor) are analyzed and discussed. Detailed discussions are also made on the factors affecting the design and operation of these anaerobic systems.

      • Fat, Fat, Fat, Everywhere!

        If someone ask me what is the major problems facing the veterinary medicine, I would not hesitate to answer, the obesity problems is the most pressing problem facing the pet animal world. I still remember a case several years ago in the N J State where the N J State Racing Commission at Peterson, N J called me in| one retired racing horse suddenly collapsed and died. I had to perform a field necropsy at the site. When I opened up, it became obvious to me that this horse had died as a result of severe obesity. My boss at that time called me over the phone and asked me whether there was any chance of infectious diseases possibilities. I told him the fact that if you have seen what I have seen-excessive fat deposits throughout the coronary groves and excessive abdominal fat, excessive intra renal fat deposits as well as perihepatic- the fat overburden this animal so much, you would not raise any infectious disease possibilities. I have had additional experiences in zoo animals, especially buffalo, bison and many other exotic birds at Turtle Back Zoo| they were dying as a result of obesity condition, which were greatly compounded by lack of exercises. In my own private practice, I have seen so many cases where obesity became more or less common maladies and many other associated conditions that do not respond, as I would like to since they are insidious and chronic condition.

        영장동물폐(靈長動物肺)의 비교해부학적연구(比較解剖學的硏究) 1. 문헌적고찰(文獻的考察)

        Detailed human gross anatomic structures have been characterized. No similar data are available in nonhuman primate species in spite of close phylogenic similarity found between man and nonhuman primates. The ever increasing incidence of lung cancer and air pollution related respiratory ailments found in man emphasizes the need for an ideal animal model for studying pathogenesis of these various human pulmonary diseases. Thus, detailed investigation of pulmonary structures found in various species of nonhuman primates is warranted. For determining primate gross pulmonary anatomic structure, published works concerning the number of tracheal cartilage, angle of tracheal bifurcation, caliber of trachea, lung lobe and bifurcation position of trachea recorded for several species of nonhuman pimates, were reviewed. Limited information is available concerning the number of tracheal cartilage, width of tracheal cartilage, angle of bronchus, caliber of trachea and bronchus, and the bifurcation position of the trachea including the length of bronchus on nonhuman primates. Since scanty data have been gathered with no specific reference to their age, sex and body weight, they have no comparative values.
