Influence of Illness Uncertainty on Health Behavior in Individuals with Coronary Artery Disease: A Path Analysis

Jeong Hyesun,Lee Yesul,Lee Yoonju 한국간호과학회 2024 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.54 No.2

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influence of uncertainty-related factors on the health behavior of individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) based on Mishel’s uncertainty in illness theory (UIT). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and path analysis to investigate uncertainty and factors related to health behavior. The study participants were 228 CAD patients who visited the outpatient cardiology department between September 2020 and June 2021. We used SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0 software to analyze the data. Results: The final model demonstrated a good fit with the data. Eleven of the twelve paths were significant. Uncertainty positively affected danger and negatively affected self-efficacy and opportunity. Danger had a positive effect on perceived risk. Opportunity positively affected social support, self-efficacy, perceived benefit and intention, whereas it negatively affected perceived risk. Social support, self-efficacy, perceived benefit and intention had a positive effect on health behavior. We found that perceived benefit and intention had the most significant direct effects, whereas self-efficacy indirectly affected the relationship between uncertainty and health behavior. Conclusion: The path model is suitable for predicting the health behavior of CAD patients who experience uncertainty. When patients experience uncertainty, interventions to increase their self-efficacy are required first. Additionally, we need to develop programs that quickly shift to appraisal uncertainty as an opportunity, increase perceived benefits of health behavior, and improve intentions.

Changes in Empathy of Nursing College Students: A Cohort Longitudinal Study

        Jeong, Hyesun,Lee, Keelyong 기본간호학회 2021 기본간호학회지 Vol.28 No.4

Purpose: This study aimed to identify changes in sub-areas of empathy over the 4 years from admission to graduation of nursing college students. Methods: This descriptive survey study was conducted using a longitudinal cohort design. The participants in this study were 158 South Korean nursing students attending a university in Chungcheongbuk Province or Gyeonggi Province, all of whom passed the certification evaluation for the 4-year nursing educational institute. Data from 126 participants were analyzed. The level of empathy was measured five times from March 2012 to December 2015. Empathy was identified using a multi-dimensional measurement tool consisting of four sub-constructs of cognitive and emotional aspects: (1) perspective taking, (2) fantasy, (3) empathic concern, and (4) personal distress. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 to provide descriptive statistics of the participants’ general characteristics and empathy level and to perform repeated-measures analysis of variance for the sub-constructs empathy. Results: Perspective taking (F=13.08, p<.001) and personal distress (F=5.24, p=.001), but not fantasy or empathic concern, showed significant differences over time. Conclusion: Cognitive empathy (perspective taking) and emotional empathy (personal distress) improved. Intervention programs should be developed to maintain and strengthen changes in empathy in nursing education.

Thymidine decreases the DNA damage and apoptosis caused by tumor‐treating fields in cancer cell lines

        Jeong Hyesun,Jo Yunhui,윤명근,홍성회 한국유전학회 2021 Genes & Genomics Vol.43 No.9

Background Tumor-treating felds (TTFields) is an emerging non-invasive cancer-treatment modality using alternating electric felds with low intensities and an intermediate range of frequency. TTFields afects an extensive range of charged and polarizable cellular factors known to be involved in cell division. However, it causes side-efects, such as DNA damage and apoptosis, in healthy cells. Objective To investigate whether thymidine can have an efect on the DNA damage and apoptosis, we arrested the cell cycle of human glioblastoma cells (U373) at G1/S phase by using thymidine and then exposed these cells to TTFields. Methods Cancer cell lines and normal cell (HaCaT) were arrested by thymidine double block method. Cells were seeded into the gap of between the insulated wires. The exposed in alternative electric felds at 120 kHz, 1.2 V/cm. They were counted the cell numbers and analyzed for cancer malignant such as colony formation, Annexin V/PI staining, γH2AX and RT-PCR. Results The colony-forming ability and DNA damage of the control cells without thymidine treatment were signifcantly decreased, and the expression levels of BRCA1, PCNA, CDC25C, and MAD2 were distinctly increased. Interestingly, however, cells treated with thymidine did not change the colony formation, apoptosis, DNA damage, or gene expression pattern. Conclusions These results demonstrated that thymidine can inhibit the TTFields-caused DNA damage and apoptosis, suggesting that combining TTFields and conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy, may enhance prognosis and decrease side efects compared with those of TTFields or conventional treatments alone.

        간호대학생의 노인체험복 착용경험에 관한 연구

        정혜선(Hyesun Jeong),김응종(Eungjong Kim),김정희(Junghee Kim) 한국노년학회 2010 한국노년학 Vol.30 No.1

This quasi-experimental study examined the experience of simulation clothes and its effects among undergraduate nursing students. Method: The experimental group consisted of 44 sophomore students in a diploma nursing program, while 41 students comprised the comparison group. Only the experimental group experienced the functional decline of aging after taking on simulation clothes. Homogeneity between the groups was analyzed using t-test, and Fisher's exact test. Paired t-test and t-test were adopted for testing changes of attitudes and awareness of supporting elders. In addition, contents of students' reports of the aging simulation experience were analyzed. Results: No significant quantitative effect was observed in attitudes toward elders and awareness of supporting elders. However, the simulation experience seemed to have enhanced students' understanding of elders and of basic elder care as well. Furthermore, the students could think of preparing for their later lives. Conclusion: The experience of simulation clothes is a meaningful learning opportunity in gerontological nursing curriculum. Students' experiences need to be shared and reinforced in a discussion session. Safety should be secured in the process of the experience. The simulation experience can be further developed to raise its quality.

Selective Fe2+ Ion Recognition Using a Fluorescent Pyridinyl-benzoimidazole-derived Ionophore

Jeong Ah Lee,Geun Hee Eom,Hyun Min Park,Ju Hoon Lee,Hyesun Song,홍창섭,윤성호,Cheal Kim 대한화학회 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.11

Fluorescent organic molecules that respond to changes in the Fe2+ concentration with selectivity to other abundant di-valent metal ions will offer the ability to understand the dynamic fluctuations of the Fe2+ ion in interesting media. The use of 6-Br-ppmbi, derived from 2-pyridin-2-yl-benzimidazole, for metal ion-selective fluorescence recognition was investigated. Screening of the main group and transition metal ions showed exclusive selectivity for Fe2+ ions even in the presence of competing metal ions. In addition, the requirement for low concentrations of probe molecules to detect certain amounts of Fe2+ ions make this sensor unique compared to previously reported Fe2+ ion sensors.

      • Domain-oriented variability modeling for reuse of simulation models

        Lee, Hyesun,Yang, Jin-Seok,Kang, Kyo Chul,Pyun, Jai-Jeong SAGE Publications 2014 Simulation Vol.90 No.4

Reusability is an important quality attribute for defense modeling and simulation (MS) due to the ever-changing combat simulations and new requirements. There has been research conducted worldwide for reusing simulation models. The methods proposed in these studies (including One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF)) support reuse of simulation components in the development of new models. As the reuse units in the existing methods are at the simulation component level, when existing components do not satisfy new simulation requirements, new components have to be developed and maintained separately from the existing ones. However, simulation components in the same domain tend to have common parts; behavior models for tactical missions and battlefield functions in the same domain are derived from the same tactical doctrine/manual, and thus they tend to have a common structure. There is a need for a new method to maximize reusability by providing “fine-grained” reuse, i.e. composing simulation components from reusable fine-grained modules (i.e. behaviors/functions). We address the problem by applying the product line engineering concept to the development of simulation components. Commonalities and variabilities (CVs) of domain-specific simulation requirements and CVs of tactical behaviors and battlefield functions are identified in domain-oriented variability modeling. Then, the CVs are used to design and implement domain-specific simulation component assets with domain-specific tactical behaviors and battlefield functions while embedding the identified variabilities. These domain-specific component assets are instantiated based on selections of variabilities and then integrated to develop a simulation model. Feasibility of the method was demonstrated in an infantry squad combat domain of the Republic of Korea armed forces.
