        Dietary intake assessment of macro, trace, and toxic elements via consumption of kimchi in South Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>BACKGROUND</B></P><P>Kimchi, a Korean food, is now produced and consumed in many other countries. In this study, the macro, trace, and toxic element content in varieties of kimchi from Korea and China was evaluated. A health‐risk assessment, involving the calculation of estimated dietary intake values, was undertaken. To discriminate among samples with different origins, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied.</P><P><B>RESULTS</B></P><P>The analytical methods used for analyses were successfully validated. In the quantification of elements, no significant differences were detected in the concentrations of the elements that were analyzed. Based on the fresh weight of kimchi, among the macro elements, the concentrations of Na and K were relatively high, with values of 4181.9–9919.8 mg kg<SUP>−1</SUP> and 1661.8–6623.5 mg kg<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively. Among the trace elements that were analyzed, zinc in Korean samples, and strontium in Chinese samples showed the highest concentrations, at 2.67 and 2.98 mg kg<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively. Concentration levels of the toxic trace elements were within permissible limits. The amount of daily intake and provisional daily intake of each element calculated based on kimchi intake confirmed its safety for consumption. Linear discriminant analysis and PCA successfully discriminated among the samples of Chinese and Korean origin.</P><P><B>CONCLUSION</B></P><P>The provisional daily intake of the toxic elements was within provisional tolerable daily intake values. The normal intake of kimchi could not pose a threat upon consumption. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry</P>

        Elemental Analysis of Sea, Rock, and Bamboo Salts by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission and Mass Spectrometry

        <P>The present study reports the determination of mineral nutrients and toxic elements of sea, rock, and roasted bamboo salts from China, India, France, Australia, Nepal, Argentina, and South Korea. Mineral nutrients including macro (Ca, K, Mg, Na, and S), micro (B, Cu, Fe, Sr, Mn, and V), trace (Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Ga, Li, Ni, Rb, Se, and Zn), and toxic (Al, Cd, Cs, In, Pb, and Tl) elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The detection limits were from 7.032 (Mg) to 13.915 (S) and 0.023 (Sr) to 0.228 (Ba) ng/g for ICP-OES and ICP-MS, respectively. The recoveries for fortified samples were from 91.3 to 107.6%. The concentrations of B, Ba, Be, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, Tl, and V were reported for the first time. In terms of mineral nutrients, the order was roasted salt>sea salt>rock salt. In addition, the only toxic element in roasted bamboo salt was aluminum. The concentrations of the elements were comparable to literature values and met regulatory guidelines. Roasted bamboo salt was shown to be a rich source of nutrients and provided the lowest concentrations of toxic elements. All salt types were shown to be safe for human consumption.</P>

        The Polysaccharide Fraction AIP1 from Artemisia iwayomogi Suppresses Apoptotic Death of the Mouse Spleen Cells in Culture

        A polysaccharide fraction, AIP1, purified from Artemisia iwayomogi was shown to have immunomodulating and anti-tumor activities in mice. In order to determine how the AIP1 fraction exhibits the immunomodulating activity, the effect of the fraction on the apoptosis of mouse spleen cells was investigated. Treatment of the mouse spleen cells with the AIP1 fraction resulted ,in the suppression of apoptotic death and an extension of cell survival in culture, indicating that the fraction might modulate the death of spleen cells. Treatment of the mice with the AIP1 fraction in vivo also resulted in less apoptosis of the spleen cells, which indicates the physiological relevance of the anti-apoptosis effect of the fraction in vitro. A mouse gene array was used to determine the profile of the gene expression change showing a pattern of up- and down-regulated genes by the AIP1 treatment. This study provides preliminary information regarding the immunomodulatory mechanism of the AIP1 fraction.

        Analysis of Volatile Compounds and Enantiomeric Separation of Chiral Compounds of Dried Sancho (Zanthoxylum schinifolium Siebold & Zucc)

        The volatile compounds of dried sancho (Zanthoxylum schinifolium), an aromatic plant were extracted by simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) method and identified by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Selected chiral constituents of sancho oil were characterized by enantiodifferentiation using multidimensional gas chromatograph (MDGC)-MS. A total of 57 compounds were identified and quantified, and the major compounds were identified estragole, nonanoic acid, octanoic acid, β-phellandrenene, and limonene. Among them, estragol (63.9%) was found as the predominantly abundant component of sancho. α-Pinene and nerolidol, and β-pinene and linalool were determined to be enantiomerically pure (100%) for their (S)-form and (R)-form, respectively. The enantiomeric composition of limonene in sancho revealed 83.9% purity for the (S)-enantiomer, whereas (E)- and (Z)-rose oxides showed mixtures of both enantiomers. The enantiomeric excess (%) for citronellal was 22.6% with the (R)-enantiomer as major enantiomer. The enantiomeric composition of these compounds can be used as parameter for authenticity control of sancho.

        Features of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients

        Background: Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of mortality in dialysis patients. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is used as a surrogate marker of early atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can cause vascular access failure. The purpose of this study was to define the clinical features of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients based on CIMT and to define the relationship between CIMT and access failure. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the CIMT of 60 patients on hemodialysis was examined using B-mode Doppler ultrasonography between May 2012 and November 2012. Carotid atherosclerosis was defined as a CIMTZ0.9 mm or the incidence of atherosclerotic plaques. Results: The patients` mean age was 54.5710.6 years, and 60% of the patients were male. The CIMT was 0.8170.47 mm (range, 0.35-2.50 mm). The group with atherosclerosis was characterized by older age compared with those without atherosclerosis. Patients with atherosclerosis showed much shorter durations of access patency than their counterparts in the nonatherosclerosis group (hazard ratio, 2.822; 95% confidence interval, 1.113-7.156; P¼0.029). Moreover, being overweight was associated with a 2.47-fold (95% confidence interval, 1.101-5.548) increased primary access failure. Conclusion: This study shows that atherosclerosis is associated with older age. Patients who are overweight and have atherosclerosis may have shortened access patency.

        디지털정보자원의 라이센스 체결 동향에 관한 소고

        본 고에서는 도서관에서 디지털정보자원을 구매하는데 필요한 라이센스의 특징과 유형 및 주요 구성요소를 살펴보았다. 또한 국내 도서관에서 이루어지고 있는 라이센스 유형을 조사 분석하여 현행 라이센스 체결의 문제점을 지적하였으며 향후 바람직한 라이센스를 체결하는데 필요한 방향을 제시하였다. Librarians regularly deal with license agreements when acquiring digital resources. This paper describes the characteristics and contents of a license agreement for purchase of digital resources in libraries. Then, after analysis of the license agreement in domestic libraries and studying problems of the agreement, there are suggestions of what should be done for an appropriate license agreement in the future.

        Plasma Real Time-Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction of Epstein-Barr Virus in Immunocompetent Patients with Hepatitis

        Purpose: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) hepatitis is a usually asymptomatic and self-limiting disease in immunocompetent patients. However, the range of severity is wide, and the serological diagnosis is typically difficult until the convalescent phase. Thus, we examined the value of plasma EBV DNA real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in EBV hepatitis for the timely diagnosis and the relationship between EBV viral load and clinical severity. Methods: Sixty samples were confirmed as having EBV infection by RT-qPCR with the EBV BALF5 gene sequence. We examined the clinical characteristics of EBV hepatitis by reviewing medical records. Results: The median total duration of fever was 8 days (range: 0-13 days). The mean peak value of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was 241±214 U/L, and the mean peak value of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was 298±312 U/L. There was no correlation between the serum levels of liver enzyme and plasma EBV DNA titer (p=0.1) or between median total duration of fever and EBV DNA titer (p=0.056). The median age of the EBV VCA IgM-negative group was lower compared with the EBV VCA IgM-positive group in EBV hepatitis (2 years vs. 6 years, p=0.0009). Conclusion: The severity of EBV hepatitis does not correlate with circulating EBV DNA load according to our data. Furthermore, we suggest that plasma EBV PCR may be valuable in young infants in whom the results of serology test for EBV infection commonly are negative.

        산초 추출물 및 분획물의 항산화, 미백 및 항염증 활성

        본 연구에서는 한약재로 사용되고 있는 산초 과피 추출물의 기능성 소재로서의 활용 가능성을 알아보기 위해 산초 추출물 및 분획물이 보유한 항산화, 미백 및 항염증 활성을 in vitro assay system 및 cell culture model system을 이용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 산초 MeOH, EtOH, 열수 추출물 모두 강한 DPPH radical 소거 활성 및 tyrosinase 효소 활성저해를 통한 DOPA 산화 억제능을 보였다. B16F10 mouse melanoma cell을 이용하여 α-MSH에 의해 유도된 세포 내 melanin 생성에 미치는 산초 추출물의 영향을 알아본 결과 농도의존적인 melanin 생성 억제능을 보였고 세포의 tyrosinase 활성 저해능 또한 이와 일치하는 결과를 보여 산초 추출물에 의한 melanin 생성 억제능이 tyrosinase 효소 활성 억제 및 melanogenesis 관련 단백질 발현 저해에서 기인한 것으로 판단된다. 또한 RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cell을 이용하여 산초 추출물의 항염증 활성을 분석한 결과 농도의존적인 NO 생성 저해능을 보였으며 이는 NO 생성 단백질인 iNOS의 발현 저해에서 기인함을 단백질 발현 분석을 통해 확인하였다. 산초 추출물에 존재하는 활성물질을 규명하기 위해 용매 분획을 실시한 후 각 분획물의 미백 및 항염증 활성을 비교 분석한 결과 물 층을 제외한 모든 용매분획이 활성을 보유함을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과를 통해 산초 추출물이 높은 항산화능과 미백활성, 그리고 항염증 활성을 보유함을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 결과는 미백활성을 비롯한 생리활성 보유 천연물 소재 탐구의 기초자료로 유용하게 쓰일 것으로 사료된다. This study was designed to explore new nutraceutical and cosmetic resources possessing biological activities from the plant kingdom. To fulfill this purpose, we analyzed the anti-oxidative, anti-melanogenic, and anti-inflammatory activities of Zanthoxylum schinifolium extract (ZSE) and its solvent fractions using in vitro assays and cell culture model systems. Three kinds of ZSE treated with methanol, ethanol, and water exhibited potent anti-oxidative activities through DPPH radical scavenging capacity, and inhibited in vitro DOPA oxidation. Furthermore, Z. schinifolium methanol extract (ZSME) inhibited the α-melanocyte stimulating hormone, which induces melanin contents in B16F10 cells. Its anti-melanogenic activity originates from the inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme activity and melanogenesis related protein expression. Moreover, lipopolysaccharide induced nitric oxide production in the RAW 264.7 cell line was also ameliorated by ZSME treatment in a dose dependent manner. Among the four solvent fractions of ZSME treated with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, nbutanol, and water, three fractions, except water, showed significant anti-melanogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. Taken together, these results provide important new insights into Z. schinifolium, indicating that it possesses numerous biological activities such as anti-oxidative, anti-melanogenic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, it may well serve as a promising material in the field of nutraceuticals and cosmetics.

        정보 수집 최적화 방안에 관한 연구

        본고는 국가 대표 정보센터의 역할을 수행할 한국과학기술정보연구원(KISTI)의 정보수집 최적화 방안을 모색하기 위한 기초 연구이다. 이를 위해 우선 국내와 해외의 도서관 및 연구소 자료실의 정보수집 현황을 살펴보고 KISTI의 정보수집 현황을 분석하였다. 그리고 정보수집의 최적화를 위한 방향을 제시하고 향후 수행해야 할 정책적 과제에 대하여 언급하였다. This is a preliminary study on establishing the optimized strategic plan for KISTI's collection. In this paper, major foreign and domestic information centers and the current status and usage of KISTI's collection are analyzed. Also included are the suggestion of a strategic solution for optimizing KISTI's collection and the discussion regarding KISTI's roles and strategies.
