Role of Computerized Physician Order Entry Usability in the Reduction of Prescribing Errors

        Hamid Reza Peikari,Mohamad Shanudin Zakaria,Norjaya M. Yasin,Mahmood Hussain Shah,Abdelbary Elhissi 대한의료정보학회 2013 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.19 No.2

Objectives: Some hospitals have implemented computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems to reduce the medical error rates. However, research in this area has been very limited, especially regarding the impact of CPOE use on the reduction of prescribing errors. Moreover, the past studies have dealt with the overall impact of CPOE on the reduction of broadly termed “medical errors”, and they have not specified which medical errors have been reduced by CPOE. Furthermore, the majority of the past research in this field has been either qualitative or has not used robust empirical techniques. This research examined the impacts of usability of CPOE systems on the reduction of doctors’ prescribing errors. Methods: One hundred and sixty-six questionnaires were used for quantitative data analyses. Since the data was not normally distributed, partial least square path modelling−as the second generation of multivariate data analyses−was applied to analyze data. Results: It was found that the ease of use of the system and information quality can significantly reduce prescribing errors. Moreover, the user interface consistency and system error prevention have a significant positive impact on the perceived ease of use. More than 50% of the respondents believed that CPOE reduces the likelihood of drug allergy, drug interaction, and drug dosing errors thus improving patient safety. Conclusions: Prescribing errors in terms of drug allergy, drug interaction, and drug dosing errors are reduced if the CPOE is not error-prone and easy to use, if the user interface is consistent, and if it provides quality information to doctors.

Free Radical Scavenging Activity of Elsholtzia densa

        Misba Khan,Rabia Hamid,Showkat Ahmad Ganie,Ishfak Hussain Wani,Bashir Ahmad Ganai,Akbar Masood,Mohmmad Afzal Zargar,Akhter Hussain Malik 사단법인약침학회 2012 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.5 No.3

Medicinal plants have been used traditionally to cure variety of diseases from times immemorial. Elsholtzia densa, a rare annual herb of Kashmir valley was assessed for its antioxidant efficacy. Antioxidant activity of the crude extracts was evaluated using DPPH, DNA sugar damage, lipid peroxidation, FTC and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. The percentage decrease of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) standard solution was recorded maximum for the 50% ethanolic extract (90.48%). The extracts were further evaluated using the thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) assay. The methanolic extract showed the highest activity (32.02%) in reducing oxidative damage to DNA. The antioxidant activity of the extracts were also determined using linoleic acid system and the highest antioxidant activity of 49.64% was found in 50% ethanolic extract. In case of FTC assay, the 50% ethanolic extract showed the highest activity (70.14%) which was comparable to that of α-tocopherol. Moreover, total phenolics concentration was found to be 62.5mg% and 77.5mg% in case of absolute ethanolic and 50% ethanolic extracts, respectively. These findings indicate promising antioxidant activity of crude extracts of the plant and need further exploration for its effective use in both modern and traditional system of medicines.

      • Forward and backward whirling of a spinning nanotube nano-rotor assuming gyroscopic effects

        Ouakad, Hassen M.,Sedighi, Hamid M.,Al-Qahtani, Hussain M. Techno-Press 2020 Advances in nano research Vol.8 No.3

This work examines the fundamental vibrational characteristics of a spinning CNT-based nano-rotor assuming a nonlocal elasticity Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The rotary inertia, gyroscopic, and rotor mass unbalance effects are all taken into consideration in the beam model. Assuming a nonlocal theory, two coupled 6th-order partial differential equations governing the vibration of the rotating SWCNT are first derived. In order to acquire the natural frequencies and dynamic response of the nano-rotor system, the nonlinear equations of motion are numerically solved. The nano-rotor system frequency spectrum is shown to exhibit two distinct frequencies: one positive and one negative. The positive frequency is known as to represent the forward whirling mode, whereas the negative characterizes the backward mode. First, the results obtained within the framework of this numerical study are compared with few existing data (i.e., molecular dynamics) and showed an overall acceptable agreement. Then, a thorough and detailed parametric study is carried out to study the effect of several parameters on the nano-rotor frequencies such as: the nanotube radius, the input angular velocity and the small scale parameters. It is shown that the vibration characteristics of a spinning SWCNT are significantly influenced when these parameters are changed.

Antioxidant Activities and Inhibitory Effects of Dietary Plants against Sodium Nitroprusside Induced Lipid Peroxidation in the Mouse Brain and Liver

        Asmatullah Khan,Syed Mubashar Sabir,Halima Nazar,Abdul Hamid,Khan Usmanghani,Hussain Ali 한국식품과학회 2014 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.23 No.4

The antioxidant properties of aqueous extractsof 6 medicinal plants, Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia chebula(black and yellow), Terminalia arjuna, BalsamodendronMukul, and Alium sativum against lipid peroxidation inmouse tissues were investigated. Extracts showed inhibitionagainst thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS)induced by pro-oxidant (5 μM sodium nitroprusside) in themouse brain and liver. Extracts displayed high free radicalscavenging activities against DPPH (IC50, 23.23±1.2 μg/mL, P. emblica), 20.24±0.9 μg/mL (T. chebula yellow),17.33±1.1 μg/mL (T. chebula black), 19.44±0.45 μg/mL (T. arjuna), 56.59±2.1 μg/mL (Balsamo-dendron Mukul), andhigher than 200 μg/mL (A. sativum). Higher antioxidantand inhibitory effects of T. chebula black are attributed toa higher phenolic content, Fe(II) chelating ability, reducingability, nitric oxide radical scavenging, and free radicalscavenging activity. Oxidative stress in the brain and livercould potentially be managed/prevented by dietary intakeof these plants.

A hypertension risk score for adults: a population-based cross-sectional study from Dubai Household Survey 2019

        Mahmoud Ibrahim,Sulaiman Nabil,Hussein Amal,Mohammed Heba,AL Nakhi Wafa Khamis,Hussain Hamid,Ibrahim Gamal 한국역학회 2021 Epidemiology and Health Vol.43 No.-

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop a risk score model for predicting hypertension specific to the population of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to facilitate prevention and early intervention. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data from the Dubai Household Health Survey 2019 was conducted. Demographic and physical parameters, as well as blood glucose levels, were included in the data. The risk factors for hypertension were identified using bivariate analysis. A risk score model was developed using the enter method, where all significant predictors of hypertension in bivariate analyses were entered in a single step with the primary outcome of hypertension status (yes/no). The model was validated internally by splitting the data into Emirati and non-Emirati populations. RESULTS: A total of 2,533 subjects were studied. The significant risk factors for hypertension identified were male sex, older age (≥ 40 years), education level, body mass index, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidaemia. The model showed a high discrimination ability between individuals with and without hypertension, with an area under the curve of 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75 to 0.79), excellent sensitivity (81.0%; 95% CI, 71.9 to 88.2) and moderate specificity (56.0%; 95% CI, 45.7 to 65.9). CONCLUSIONS: The model developed by this study is simple, convenient, and based on readily available demographic and medical characteristics. This risk score model could support initial hypertension screening and provide an effective tool for targeted lifestyle counselling and prevention programs.
