        Quantification of three-dimensional facial asymmetry for diagnosis and postoperative evaluation of orthognathic surgery

        Background: To evaluate the facial asymmetry, three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) has been used widely. This study proposed a method to quantify facial asymmetry based on 3D-CT. Methods: The normal standard group consisted of twenty-five male subjects who had a balanced face and normal occlusion. Five anatomical landmarks were selected as reference points and ten anatomical landmarks were selected as measurement points to evaluate facial asymmetry. The formula of facial asymmetry index was designed by using the distances between the landmarks. The index value on a specific landmark indicated zero when the landmarks were located on the three-dimensional symmetric position. As the asymmetry of landmarks increased, the value of facial asymmetry index increased. For ten anatomical landmarks, the mean value of facial asymmetry index on each landmark was obtained in the normal standard group. Facial asymmetry index was applied to the patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery. Preoperative facial asymmetry and postoperative improvement were evaluated. Results: The reference facial asymmetry index on each landmark in the normal standard group was from 1.77 to 3.38. A polygonal chart was drawn to visualize the degree of asymmetry. In three patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery, it was checked that the method of facial asymmetry index showed the preoperative facial asymmetry and the postoperative improvement well. Conclusions: The current new facial asymmetry index could efficiently quantify the degree of facial asymmetry from 3D-CT. This method could be used as an evaluation standard for facial asymmetry analysis.

        Allogeneic Fibrin Clot for Odontogenic/Cementogenic Differentiation of Human Dental Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        BACKGROUND: Fetal bovine serum is widely used as a growth supplement for cell culture medium; however, animal-borne pathogens increase the risk of transmitting infectious agents. Platelet-rich fibrin is recently considered as a successful alternative but leukocytes present limits to its allogeneic feasibility. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of allogeneic fibrin clot (AFC) without leukocytes on inducing odontogenic/cementogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: AFC was prepared by high-speed centrifugation and leukocytes were almost removed, and AFC serum was obtained through three freeze–thaw cycles. hDPSCs and hPDLSCs were treated with AFC serum to investigate the odontogenic or cementogenic associated markers by real-time polymerase chain reaction. hDPSCs were treated with AFC serum and placed inside of dentin canal, hPDLSCs were treated with AFC serum to wrap outside of dentin, the mixture was then transplanted into the subcutaneous of nude mice for 12 weeks. RESULTS: AFC serum exhibited enough growth factors and cytokines to induce odontogenic/cementogenic differentiation of hDPSCs and hPDLSCs in vitro. Furthermore, AFC seurum could induce hDPSCs to differentiate into odontoblasts-like cells and pulp-like tissues, and hPDLSCs to regenerate cementum-like tissues. CONCLUSION: AFC could be an alternative safe source with growth factors for the expansion of human dental mesenchymal stem cells (hDMSCs).

        Prognostic Value of Baseline and Interim Total Metabolic Tumor Volume and Total Lesion Glycolysis Measured on 18F-FDG PET-CT in Patients with Follicular Lymphoma

        Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) in patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) at baseline and mid-treatment with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) scans. Materials and Methods The study analyzed data from 48 patients with FL who were treated in Jiangsu Province Hospital and reviewed their baseline PET-CT scans. TMTV and TLG were computed by using the absolute value of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 thresholding method, respectively. Results Median age was 53 years, 75.0% of patients had stage III to IV disease, 43.8% had a Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index 1 (FLIPI1) score of 3 to 5 and 20.8% had a FLIPI2 score of 3 to 5. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed the optimal cut-off values for TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were 476.4 (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 78.0%; area under the curve [AUC], 0.760; p=0.003) and 2,676.9 (sensitivity, 71.4%; specificity, 78.0%; AUC, 0.760; p=0.003). On multivariable analysis, TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were independent predictors of both progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio [HR], 5.406; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.326 to 22.040; p=0.019 and HR, 6.502; 95% CI, 1.079 to 39.182; p=0.042) and overall survival (OS) (HR, 4.111; 95% CI, 1.125 to 15.027; p=0.033 and HR, 5.885; 95% CI, 1.014 to 34.148; p=0.049). ROC curve analysis showed the optimal cut-off values for TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were 66.3% (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 63.4%; AUC, 0.774; p < 0.001) and 64.5% (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 65.9%; AUC, 0.777; p < 0.001). Conclusion Baseline TMTV and TLG are strong predictors of PFS and OS in FL. Furthermore, interim TMTV (TMTV > 66.3%) and TLG (TLG > 64.5%) reduction are valuable tools for early treatment response assessment in FL patients.

      • An Adaptive Energy Aware Algorithm for Reliable Transmission Sensor Networks

        Route maintenance and repair process plays an important role in mobile self-organizing network. On the basis of considering route stability and energy aware routing protocol, a new scheme is proposed in this paper. Firstly, signal strength, rest energy and port queue length are periodically and alternately detected; secondly, cross-layer method is adopted for route maintenance, and the alternate route is actively established for data transmission according to the routing repair mechanism “Make-before-Break”; finally, relevant experiment is carried out in NS2 to simulate and compare the proposed protocol and other similar routing protocols such as RSEA and LAER. The experiment result shows that the new scheme has good performance in the aspects of data packet delivery ratio, overhead control and end-to-end delay.

        Doping effect on the adsorption of Na atom onto graphenes

        We investigate the adsorption of Na atoms on pristine graphene and four types of defect graphenes using the first-principles calculations. The adsorption energies, electronic structures, Na storage capacities and the average potentials of Na atoms on different graphenes are calculated. The adsorption energies of Na atoms on B-doped, vacancy and B-doped vacancy graphenes are 1.93 eV, 2.46 eV, and 2.08 eV, respectively, which are much lower than that of Na on the pristine graphene (0.71 eV) and Na on Ndoped graphene (0.27 eV). The orbital hybridizations in the B-doped, vacancy and B-doped vacancy graphenes can be observed from the partial density of states, while there is no obvious orbital hybridization in the N-doped graphene as well as the pristine graphene. The B-doped vacancy graphene has the best Na storage capacity, while B-doped and vacancy graphenes also possess better Na storage capacities than those of the pristine graphene and N-doped graphene. This work demonstrates that the graphene introducing both B dopant and vacancy is expected to be a potential material for storing Na.

        Employing rotating vaneless diffuser to enhance the performance of plenum fan

        Numerical simulation is carried out for flow characteristics in a plenum fan and the influence of the diameter ratio of the rotating vaneless diffuser on the performance of plenum fan is analyzed. The diameter ratio of the rotating vaneless diffuser employed is from 1.03 to 1.3. The research results show that the rotating vaneless diffuser is able to enhance the performance of plenum fan. It is found that there is significant improvement in static pressure and efficiency at the diameter ratio of 1.05 at high flow coefficients, while the optimal diameter ratio is 1.2 at rated and low flow coefficient.

        Effects of dietary spermine supplementation on cell cycle, apoptosis, and amino acid transporters of the thymus and spleen in piglets

        Objective: This study investigated whether spermine supplementation could regulate cell cycle, apoptosis, and amino acid transporter-related genes expression in the thymus and spleen of early weaned piglets. Methods: Eighty female piglets were randomly distributed to receive adequate nutrients supplemented with spermine (0.4 mmol/kg body weight/24 h) or to be provided with restricted nourishment supplemented with normal saline for 7 h or 3, 6, or 9 d in pairs. Results: Regardless of administration time, spermine supplementation significantly up-regulated cyclin A2 gene expression but down-regulated p21 and cyclin D3 mRNA levels in the thymus and spleen and reduced cyclin E2 gene expression in the thymus of piglets (p<0.05). Irrespective of the treatment period, the reduced Bax and caspase-3 gene expressions and improved Bcl-2 mRNA level were observed in the thymus and spleen of spermine-administrated piglets (p<0.05). Regardless of supplementation time, spermine intake significantly enhanced the expressions of amino acid transporter-related genes (SLC1A1, SLC1A5, SLC7A1, SLC7A7, and SLC15A1) in both thymus and spleen, as well as SLC7A9 in the spleen of piglets (p<0.05). In addition, extended spermine administration also markedly promoted cell proliferation, depressed apoptosis and modulated amino acid transport (p<0.05), and such effects were the greatest during prolonged spermine supplementation (6 d) compared to the other time periods (p<0.05). Conclusion: Spermine supplementation may regulate cell cycle during the G1/S phase, suppress apoptosis and modulate amino acid transport. A period of 6 d of spermine supplementation is required to produce the optimal effects on nutritional implications.
