Therapeutic Effect of Dioctahedral Smectite on Diarrhea Caused by E. coli and Salmonella in Calves

Hu Jang Lee1,3*, Chun-Nam Cha, Yeo-Eun Lee, Hyunju Choi, Joon-Seob Shin, Suk Kim 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2012 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.13 No.2

The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the therapeutic effect of dioctahedral smectite (smectite) against calf diarrhea caused by pathogenic E. coli and/or Salmonella typhimurium. In this study, 20 calves (aged 2~3 months) with diarrhea were used for evaluation of the efficacy of smectite on calf diarrhea with 20% smectite suspension in PBS. Calves received 10 ml smectite suspension three times per day after feeding, and fecal samples were collected at the gate of treatment and on the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth day after administration. On the fifth day after treatment with smectite suspension, the diarrhea index showed a significant decrease in the treated group, compared to the control group (P<0.001). The number of pathogenic E. coli in feces of the treated group was significantly decreased, compared to each control group from the second day after treatment (P<0.001), and that of Salmonella typhimurium was significantly decreased from the first day after treatment (P<0.05). According to the results of the current study, 20% smectite suspension had a therapeutic effect on diarrhea caused by E. coli and/or Salmonella in calves.

우모 분해균의 분리 및 특성에 관한 연구

        강호조,이후장,정태성,김도경,어용준,김재황 한국수의공중보건학회 2003 예방수의학회지 Vol.27 No.3

Feather waste, generated in large quantities as a byproduct of commercial poultry processing, is almost pure keratin, which is not easily degradable by common proteolytic enzymes. Several feather-degrading bacterial isolates were isolated from feather waste and soil. These isolates were able to degrade chicken feather, when grown on basal medium containing 1.0% native feather as a source of energy, carbon, and nitrogen. The isolates were characterized according to morphological characteristics and biochemical tests, and Vitek and API kit system. belonging to the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus complex, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus circulans, Bacillus cereus. It was observed that aerobic growth by the isolate on single whole chicken feather, resulted in complete degradation of the keratin protein after 5-6 days of incubation at 37℃. The production of protein by the organism was decreased with cultivation time, with the maximum activity coinciding with the start of the stationary phase. The kerationolytic activity increased with cultivation time.

Naphthalene Derivative Supported Activated Carbon Composite Electrode with Enhanced Capacitance and Potential Window

Hu, Mengyang,Park, Jeong Ho,Lee, Kwang Se,Ko, Jang Myoun The Korean Electrochemical Society 2019 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.10 No.2

A derivative of 1,4-Naphthoquinone coded HBU671 was synthesized and used in addition to activated carbon as composite electrode for supercapacitor application. From the electrochemical properties analysis, a specific capacitance of about $300F\;g^{-1}$ exhibited almost two times of that of activated carbon at a scan rate of $100mV\;s^{-1}$ and a potential window of - 0.2 - 1V. This improvement is due to the inherent redox reaction in HBU671. Cycle test also proved that this composite is still stable even after 1000 cycle within the applied potential window and it is highly recommended for practical application.

Effect of feeding the combination with Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis on fecal microflora and diarrhea incidence of Korean native calves

        Lee, Yeo-Eun,Kang, In-Jin,Yu, Eun-Ah,Kim, Suk,Lee, Hu-Jang The Korean Society of Veterinary Service 2012 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.35 No.4

This study was investigated the effects of feeding the combination with Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis on the diarrhea incidence and fecal microflora of weaned calves. A total of 12 newly weaned calves were allocated to two dietary treatments in a randomized design based on body weight. The dietary treatments included a commercial basal diet supplemented with: 1) no microbial inoculants (Control); 2) a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis (LB). Calves were fed diets for a 4-week period. At the end of the experiment, the counts of fecal lactic acid bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae in LB were significantly improved compared to control (P<0.05). Over the 4-week period, fecal scores and duration of diarrhea in LB were significantly decreased compared with those in control (P<0.05). The present results suggest that LB is a potential feed additive which could be used for the balance of intestinal microflora and the prevention of diarrhea in Korean native calves.

Controlling the acid-base properties of alumina for stable PtSn-based propane dehydrogenation catalysts

Jang, Eun Jeong,Lee, Jaekyoung,Jeong, Hu Young,Kwak, Ja Hun Elsevier 2019 Applied Catalysis A Vol.572 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The surface properties of catalyst supports are important in regulating the catalytic properties of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, we studied the effect of acid-base properties of alumina on metal-support interaction and coke deposition, and investigated the stability of catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) using PtSn/Al2O3. We prepared γ-Al2O3 (A750) from ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (AACH) and compared it with a commercial sample (Sasol Puralox SBA-200; P200). We loaded 0.5 wt% Pt and 0.9 wt% Sn on alumina then conducted propane dehydrogenation at 590 °C (WHSV = 5.2 h−1). PtSn/A750 and PtSn/P200 showed compatible initial activity (conversion = ˜50%) and selectivity (> 95%). After 20 h of reaction, PtSn/A750 showed a slight decrease in activity (39.9%) while the activity of PtSn/P200 dropped significantly (28.4%). Spent catalysts showed different metal sintering behavior and coke deposition which are well known causes for catalyst deactivation. A high strength of Lewis acid sites in A750 (higher Td in ethanol TPD) prevented the sintering of metal by strong metal-support interaction. Also, the lower number of Lewis acid sites in A750 than that of P200 reduced deposited coke on the catalysts (PtSn/A750: 1.8 wt% and PtSn/P200: 8.6 wt%). Furthermore, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy after CO adsorption at -150 °C clearly demonstrated that coke deposition was initiated from Lewis acid sites on the alumina surface, but then aromatization occurs at these sites. These results suggested that strong metal-support interactions to hold metal particles and less residual Lewis acid sites after metal loading to reduce coke deposition are important factors for designing stable and coke-resistant PtSn on alumina catalysts. Furthermore, precise characterization and understanding of the acid-base properties of alumina will contribute in developing catalysts with high stability.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Strong Lewis acid sites on alumina inhibit metal sintering during PDH. </LI> <LI> Excess Lewis acid sites increased coke deposition during PDH. </LI> <LI> Strong but less residual Lewis acid sites are important for control the deactivation. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Supercapacitive properties of electrodeposited RuO2 electrode in acrylic gel polymer electrolytes

( Hu Mengyang ),( Alfred Madzamuse ),이해수,( Louis Hamenu ),( Latifatu Mohammed ),( Won Il Cho ),( Young-gi Lee ),( Kwang Man Kim ),( Jang Myoun Ko ) 한국공업화학회 2015 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2015 No.1

Hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is prepared by electrodeposition on a platinum substrate and its supercapacitive properties are characterized adopting acrylic gel polymer electrolytes, such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), potassium polyacrylate (PAAK), and poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl -1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS). The electrodeposited hydrous RuO2 exhibits an amorphous compact stratified morphology with a higher loading (0.15 mg cm-2) than that of a previous report, and shows broad redox peaks on both cathodic and anodic scans in the cyclic voltammetry. In particular, the RuO2 electrode for supercapacitor adopting the PAMPS electrolyte shows the highest specific capacitance of 642 F g-1 at 20 mV s-1. This is due to the efficient utilization of active RuO2 species and greater proton accommodation toward the negative oxygen sites of PAMPS's side chain. In addition, it is possible to improve sustainability against high-rate current with the RuO2 electrode with the PAMPS electrolyte, due to the crosslinks of the gel electrolyte, which support the mechanical strength.

Awareness of Asbestos and Action Plans for Its Exposure can Help Lives Exposed to Asbestos

Lee, Hu-Jang,Park, Eun-Kee,Wilson, Donald,Tutkun, Engin,Oak, Chulho Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2013 Safety and health at work Vol.4 No.2

Despite the fact that asbestos is a known carcinogen to humans, it is still used in industrialized countries, especially Asian countries. The global incidence of asbestos-related diseases (ARDs) due to the past use of asbestos, continues to increase, although many countries have adopted a total ban on asbestos use. The implementation of effective strategies to eliminate ARDs is therefore an important challenge in Asia, where asbestos is still mined and consumed. Collaborative efforts and strategies at the local and international levels are vital, in the pursuit toward the elimination of ARDs in this region.

Lee, Jaekyoung,Jang, Eun Jeong,Jeong, Hu Young,Kwak, Ja Hun Elsevier 2018 Applied Catalysis A Vol.556 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this work, the effect of crystal facets on the catalytic behavior of γ-Al2O3 was investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of ethanol, solid-state 27Al NMR, infrared spectroscopy, and ethanol dehydration reaction. A series of platelet γ-Al2O3 were synthesized, in which the relative ratio of (100) facets had been systematically increased. Ethylene formation increased with increasing (100) facets, clearly demonstrating the critical role of these facets as active sites for ethanol dehydration on γ-Al2O3. Hu Chen,Hyun-seop Lim,Seung-ik Hwang,Jang-myung Lee 제어로봇시스템학회 2013 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2013 No.10

Path planning of mobile robot has a purpose to design an optimal path from initial position to target point. Driving distance is considered when choose the optimal path. In this paper, we proposed efficient driving trajectory when mobile robot follows moving object in real time. First, position and distance of moving object can be acquired using one web camera and rotation angular velocity, linear velocity is estimated using Kalman filter to predict trajectory of moving object. Finally mobile robot follows moving object using proposed tracking control method by estimating trajectory of moving object.

      • Atomic-scale imaging of few-layer black phosphorus and its reconstructed edge

        Lee, Yangjin,Yoon, Jun-Yeong,Scullion, Declan,Jang, Jeongsu,Santos, Elton J G,Jeong, Hu Young,Kim, Kwanpyo IOP 2017 Journal of Physics. D, Applied Physics Vol.50 No.8

<P>Black phosphorus (BP) has recently emerged as an alternative 2D semiconductor owing to its fascinating electronic properties such as tunable bandgap and high charge carrier mobility. The structural investigation of few-layer BP, such as identification of layer thickness and atomic-scale edge structure, is of great importance to fully understand its electronic and optical properties. Here we report atomic-scale analysis of few-layered BP performed by aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We establish the layer-number-dependent atomic resolution imaging of few-layer BP via TEM imaging and image simulations. The structural modification induced by the electron beam leads to revelation of crystalline edge and formation of BP nanoribbons. Atomic resolution imaging of BP clearly shows the reconstructed zigzag (ZZ) edge structures, which is also corroborated by van der Waals first principles calculations on the edge stability. Our study on the precise identification of BP thickness and atomic-resolution imaging of edge structures will lay the groundwork for investigation of few-layer BP, especially BP in nanostructured forms.</P>
