<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Excessive bone resorption caused by increased osteoclast number or activity leads to a variety of bone diseases including osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis. Thus, the therapeutic strategy for these diseases has been focused primarily on the inhibition of osteoclast formation and function. This study shows that euphorbia factor L1 (EFL1), a diterpenoid isolated from <I>Euphorbia lathyris</I>, inhibited osteoclastogenesis and induced osteoclast apoptosis. EFL1 suppressed osteoclast formation and bone resorption at both initial and terminal differentiation stages. EFL1 inhibited receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced NFATc1 induction with attenuated NF-κB activation and c-Fos expression. EFL1 decreased the level of reactive oxygen species by scavenging them or activating Nrf2, and inhibited PGC-1β that regulates mitochondria biogenesis. In addition, EFL1 induced apoptosis in differentiated osteoclasts by increasing Fas ligand expression followed by caspase activation. Moreover, EFL1 inhibited inflammation-induced bone erosion and ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice. These findings suggest that EFL1 inhibits osteoclast differentiation by regulating cellular redox status and induces Fas-mediated apoptosis in osteoclast, and may provide therapeutic potential for preventing or treating bone-related diseases caused by excessive osteoclast.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> EFL1 inhibits osteoclastogenesis by suppressing NF-κB and PGC-1β. </LI> <LI> EFL1 reduces cellular ROS level by scavenging them or activating Nrf2. </LI> <LI> EFL1 induces Fas-mediated apoptosis in osteoclasts but not in BMMs. </LI> <LI> EFL1 inhibits inflammation- and ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice. </LI> <LI> EFL1 could be useful for treating osteoclast-mediated bone diseases. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Buerger’s disease (thromboangiitis obliterans) is known as a segmental inflammatory vasculitis that involves the small-sized and medium-sized arteries, veins, and nerves. Most effective treatment for Buerger’s disease is smoking cessation. Except for the cessation of tobacco use, surgical revascularization is available in severe ischemia and a distal target vessel. Amputation has been used as the last treatment option of the disease up to the present. Increasing limb survival and decreasing amputation rate is important. This case describes the use of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in patient with Buerger’s disease and its effect is not only the complete healing of ulcers but also amputation is not performed.

Despite the expansion of sewage treatment facilities to reduce pollutants in the tributaries of the Han River, water pollution accidents such as fish deaths continue to frequently occur. The purpose of this study was to identify the pollutant sources using water quality and stable isotope ratio (${\delta}^{15}N$, ${\delta}^{13}C$, ${\delta}^{15}N-NH_4$, ${\delta}^{15}N-NO_3$) analysis results in the three inflow tributaries (Gulpocheon (GP), Anyangcheon (AY) and Sincheon (SC)) of the Han River. Water quality was analyzed in June and October from 2013 to 2017, and the results showed that the concentrations of nutrients, such as T-N, $NO_3-N$, and T-P, were increased at GP4, AY3, SC3, and SC4, which lie downstream of sewage treatment facilities. The results of ${\delta}^{15}N$ for June 2017 indicated that the source of nitrogen was sewage or livestock excreta at GP4 and SC4, and organic fertilizers at AY3 and SC3. ${\delta}^{15}N-NO_3$ results suggested that the source of nitrogen was related to organic sewage, livestock or manure at GP4, AY3 and SC4. Therefore, GP4 and SC4 were more influenced by effluent from sewage treatment facilities than by their tributaries, AY3 and SC3 were considered to be influenced more by their tributary than effluent from sewage treatment facilities. With the results of this study, the source of contamination (sewage treatment facility effluent) of river inflow downstream of Han River could be confirmed using water quality and stable isotope ratio.

Lichenoid drug eruption related to nivolumab in melanoma patient

PD-1(Programmed cell death 1)inhibitors, such as Nivolumab or Pembrolizumab, are used to treat melanoma of skin, but they can induce lichenoid drug eruption as one of the common skin side effects. We report at a 87-year-old woman presenting with polygonal, violaceous papules and plaques with overlying white scale, symmetrically distributed on the arms, legs, and trunk, and no involvement of the mucosa for a month. She was diagnosed with melanoma with multiple lymph node involvement 6 months ago and treated with Nivolumab for 2 months, and there have been no changes in other drugs. Histological examination revealed localized dyskeratosis, epidermal hyperplasia, interface dermatitis, and lichenoid infiltration consisted of lymphocytes, histiocytes, and eosinophils at the upper dermis. Based on her drug history, clinical features and histologic examination, she was diagnosed with lichenoid drug eruption due to Nivolumab and improved by systemic steroid and antihistamines. Although the mechanism of the onset is still unclear, it is thought to be caused by cross reaction of normal skin which induced by immunological changes of T lymphocytes to potential antigens due to the target effect on the PD-1/PDL1 pathway, rather than nonspecific hypersensitivity. Recently, drug eruption after using PD-1 inhibitor has been estimated as a positive predictor of treatment response, but further study is needed.
지하철 터널 내 미세먼지 제거를 위한 하이브리드형 집진장치

지하철은 터널을 주행하면서 바퀴와 휠의 마찰, 팬토그래프의 마찰 등에 의해 수많은 미세먼지를 생성하고, 생성된 미세먼지는 지하철 터널 내에서 빠져나가지 못하고 축적되어 지하철 운행에 의해 다시 재비산된다. 지하철 터널의 오염된 공기는 객차로 유입되어 승객의 건강에 나쁜 영향을 미치거나 전동차 장치들에 침착되어 고장의 주요 원인이 되기도 한다. 이러한 지하철 터널의 미세먼지를 줄이기 위해 전동차에 집진장치를 직접 부착하고 열차가 달리는 주행풍을 이용하여 미세먼지를 집진하고자 하였다. 지하철은 역과 역 사이를 오가며 속도가 항상 바뀌기 때문에, 이러한 유동속도를 모두 커버하기 위해서 관성집진기와 전기집진기를 결합한 하이브리드형 집진장치를 개발하였다. 하이브리드형 집진장치의 집진성능을 풍동에서 시험하고, 실제 전동차에 부착하여 미세먼지 포집량을 확인하였다. A lot of particles were generated by friction of train wheel and railway or pantograph during subway traveling in underground tunnel. Then generated particles could not escape from underground tunnel and it accumulated in subway tunnel and re-suspended by subway moving. Contaminated air in underground tunnel come to be cause of bad effect for train passengers and electrical device trouble. To decrease particles in underground tunnel, dust collector was installed at under the train to use the train wind. The subway speed was changed during it traveling station to station. Then dust collector installed at under the train should be considering the various train wind speed conditions. Therefore, in this study, hybrid dust collector which merging electrostatic precipitator and inertial collector was designed. Collection efficiency of hybrid dust collector was tested in wind tunnel and it installed at under the train to check how many dust was collected by hybrid dust collector.
